My granddaughter's autistic sister (age three) calling me "Grandma" for the first time. Jackie has a three year old autistic sister who is her half-sister and no blood relation to me. I've always treated her just like Jackie, sent gifts, cards etc. I don't see her as often as Jackie since Jackie spends a weekend with me once a month and I usually only see her sister at the pick-up and drop off. She recognizes me but didn't think she had any idea about who I was. Well, I went down to Jackie's house and spent the weekend for her little brother's 1st birthday. Yesterday, I took Jackie to a movie. I brought a big tub of popcorn back for her sister and the little girl said "Look, my grandma bought me popcorn". And she gave me a hug. That little girl saying "my grandma" made my day.

Awww! I know you've been super careful and balancing that fine line between keeping them involved and feeling loved but not trying to take over. Sounds like she knows who loves her!

A kid can never have too many grandmas to love her. So sweet!

How sweet. I don't think that kids care about the distinctions that we adults make. If you're her sister's grandma, then you should be hers, too. I know that my nieces (the children of my siblings) refer to my MIL as "Grandma Smith" just like my kids call her. And you figure, that's the what they hear her referred to as by their cousins, and like you, she tends to make sure that she gives them gifts and treats too. And really, what could be better than another loving grandma, right?

And really, what could be better than another loving grandma, right? So very very true! Many years ago my brother married a woman with a wonderful 7 year old daughter. Unfortunately the marriage only lasted about 5 years, but the bond between my brother and his stepdaughter is still so strong - 30 years later! Her kids call him Grandpa, and there is such a sweet relationship between them and my brother and his "new" wife of 25 years. The more love, no matter the relationship, the better!

That's lovely. In New Zealand, our word for family is whanau. It roughly translates to everyone in my tribe and everyone I deem to be in my tribe. I have lots of 'whanau' who are not blood related. It is normal for teachers to be called Whaea (honorific for Aunty) Susan or Matua (honorific for Uncle) Fred as opposed to Mrs Smith or Mr Jones. I have a friend whose husband is a white dude from Scotland. He is a teacher. He loves that the kids in his class call him Matua Mark.
