Blue ApronI just learned about this today. It's a company that ships the ingredients to your door for complete meals. They include the recipe, but you have to make the meals yourself. The cost is $9.99/per person/per meal. Now, I can cook any of the meals our family of 4 likes for under $20, and most of them are under $10. Our monthly grocery budget is $400 (both in the Midwest last year, and now in Eastern Europe), plus one meal out per week. One WEEKS worth of these meals would be $280. I understand the convenience of it, but if I want to pay that much per meal, I'll go out to eat so I don't have to cook and clean up. What say the peas? Would you order these meals??

Personally, I wouldn't. It's outside my budget, I can feed my family on less than that per week. Plus, I'm in keep it simple mode. Some of those recipes look a little fancy for me.

I agree, it seems VERY expensive and for that reason I would never order it. That said, I do like the way they write their recipes. I can never seem to get things timed right and it seems I'm either running around like crazy trying to catch up, or waiting for something to finish. The whole "while that is cooking, do this" would be very helpful, so I may try some of their recipes.

No, I wouldn't. It's too pricey for us on a daily basis.

It may be neat to try once, but too expensive to do regularly.

No, I wouldn't spend the money. I think it's a great deal for all the people promoting it on their blogs.

Well it's not cheap, but I'm wondering what you think would be a more reasonable price that would cover the cost of all the ingredients (protein, vegetable, starch, spices, etc.), the cost of delivery (which would probably be overnight delivery since the food would need to be kept on ice), the cost of creating interesting menu items and assembling all the ingredients, the cost of business overhead, and still allow for some profit for the business?
I wouldn't do this regularly but it might be interesting for a change of pace.

The meals look like they are on the "exotic" side which makes them more expensive on average that I'd normally cook. Plus they are going to charge the customer for their time shopping, prepping, packaging and shipping. If I was someone who only cooked a few times a month, didn't want to deal with shopping and odd amounts of various items left over and thought of cooking more as a hobby instead of a budget driven way to feed my family it would be a differen point of view. that might make it worth it... sort of like scrapbooking kits.

It seems really expensive. It wouldn't be something I would choose to spend our money doing but I would guess there are people out there that wouldn't agree. Those people are the ones buying the service. I guess they would feel they aren't only paying for the food but for the service of planning and delivery.

Grocery delivery, on the other hand... I just can't see paying $40 for a meal I have to cook and clean up after. Maybe for a date night or something.

It might be a fun way to try new ingredients that I wouldn't normally buy because I don't want to spend the time figuring out recipes, how to cook it, etc. For someone who doesn't have a lot of time, and enjoys cooking and trying new things, it might be a fun change from the usual.

I wonder if this would be a good way to "try" a new meal. Then if you like it, you could just buy the ingredients yourself.
As for a permanent way to have meals, I couldn't do it.

I have a friend who uses this service occasionally -- and her husband is in the produce business! I think she sees it as a fun way to try to recipes. She likes to cook and $$ isn't a huge issue.

It is expensive and not something I would do because I like to cook and even grocery shop and can prepare good meals for a lot less per serving. However, I can see the appeal for a certain segment of the population. They are busy and have a good income. They don't want to eat out all the time even though they can afford it because they'd prefer more healthfully prepared food. However, planning meals and shopping for them feels like a big time suck, so they do end up eating out a lot.
This is a happy medium for that target demographic.
It's definitely not for everyone and it's not geared to being a money saver, rather a time saver and a lifestyle choice.

I actually love the concept. Meal planning and grocery shopping are really my most hated tasks. I like the idea of fresh, sustainable ingredients - and don't really compare it to eating out. Usually for a similar price point - you're eating out at a restaurant with much lower quality food. I do think the price point is too high. It's pretty comparable to the services where someone will come into your home and prepare 5 full meals a week for your family. They do 90% of the prep work and then you just have to finish the meal.

No, I would not.
Because for 9.99 per person, we could just spend a bit more and go out to eat, skipping the cooking all together, and being able to choose from a larger variety of foods, too.

No way in this life could that be in my budget. I also have kids with very plain tastes so not sure I would get the full benefit of anything more chef-i-fied.

I think the price is pretty reasonable for what you get, but no way would I do this everyday.
And where in the world can you go out to dinner for a hot meal for under 9.99pp? I can barely find lunch for under that.

Yes and no.
I'm more of a bargain shopper so that is more than I spend. But if I was in a higher income bracket I think it would be great to have someone else do the shopping and meal planning for me.

$60 a meal? ugh no. we couldn't possibly do that. I usually feed my family for under $10 a meal. There's no way we could afford to do that. I might do it for a special anniversary meal, but then it's not so special when I'm cooking, cleaning up, and figuring out what to do with the kids or eating with them like we do with every meal anyway.
I can see it being a worthwhile thing for some families but it won't ever work for mine.

I wouldn't do it. 10 bucks per person is too much in my world unless it's like steaks or something. I would rather just find a recipe and get my own ingredients.

It's not quite like eating out, which we be more expensive. But it's steep for making it yourself. I bet it's for DINKs (double income, no kids).

If I weren't a SAHM, I might consider it. You can't go out to a sitdown restaurant for a non-fast food meal for less than $10 per person in our area.
It might also be a temporary option for someone who just had a baby, was injured with a broken limb, or someone who can't travel to the grocery store.
If I set my mind to it, I can feed our group of 6 for less than about $15 for a dinner meal. That takes into account some special dietary idiosyncrasies too.

I can barely find lunch for under that. I can think of lots of places to eat meals for under $10. Must be the area I'm in, but very few places we eat are more than that. Of course we don't go to fancy places either, except maybe twice a year. When we do go out, it's pretty simple stuff (Panera's, Chipotle's, Great Northern, etc) Honestly though, if I wanted to spend $10 a meal, I could just go get Wegman's salad bar for the same price, and that way everyone could get what they want, and no clean up.

My son got us a few weeks worth as a Christmas gift. The meals were very good and introduced us to a few things I had never tried. It includes everything down to the spices you need, so there is no waste. However there is a huge amount of packaging for every delivery. It did require more prep work (chopping) than I liked. I still make some of the recipes that came with it and if you "like" it on FaceBook or if they have your email address they post recipes.
