We have a bipolar person who hates spiders in a house that has some spiders. I don't feel like it's any more of a problem than usual, but to him, it's a trigger.
Suggestions?

My husband sprays around the house for bugs every fall and in the spring, it helps...keep leaves and such away from your home...

We have a pest control company come out and spray the exterior of the house and the lake cabin in the spring and again the fall. I haven't seen any spiders in the house at all since we started having him come, and the ones at the cabin are way, way down too.

I spray the doorways and window sill with a peppermint oil/water mixture. Spiders hate peppermint oil. I've only seen one spider in the house all year, and he came up through a drain. He promptly died an honorable death.

I mix several drops of peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle of distilled water, then spray all along the baseboards in the house. I reapply every week or so. The water will evaporate but the smell of the peppermint repels spiders and other creepy crawlies. Here's the website where I found the directions.

I have an amazing pest control guy that uses all essential oils and stuff. He sprays once a month, and we never ever have a problem inside. And believe me, we have zillions of spiders at our house here in NC and on the water. But they don't ever get in and our house always smells like evergreen and wonderful stuff. He charges me $50 which includes spraying for mosquitoes.

Tell him that NPS's Science Friday says that spiders are very nurturing and don't really like to bite.
Thanks for the essential oil tip, Peas. I have way too many spiders around.

Asking them nicely to stay out doesn't work, so I use bug spray around the perimeter of the house, including doors and window, both inside and out. Many bug sprays do not harm animals.

I spray around the foundation, the porches and in the garage with something an exterminator recommended for earwigs and it takes care of spiders and other bugs as well. I get it at co-op.

We have professional pest control since we had our house built in 1991. You would think the house and grounds would be saturated with the stuff, but we still got a wolf spider in the house last night. We also have some black widows outside that we spray with the foaming wasp stuff. The pest guy says spiders are a bit more difficult to treat because they walk way up on their legs and don't get the poison on their bellies.

I ordered some peppermint oil! THanks for the suggestion. My house won't smell like chewing gum, will it?

If, by chance, your pest control guy has any contacts for a company that uses essential oils in the Raleigh area, I'd love to know about it. We just moved to a "heavily wooded" neighborhood and I've never seen so many spiders in my entire life!

Sure. I will ask him. He used to be a manager for Orkin but didn't like the "bad chemicals" so he started his own company years ago. He knows a lot of people in the business. I would text him now but I think his wife is at work and he is home alone with the kids. They homeschool 4 special needs kiddos they adopted. They are an awesome family!

I spray the area around my doors, windows, air vents and water pipes with Bengal twice a year. If something makes it across one of those thresholds, it dies within a few feet. I have no mercy when it comes to critters in the house..
I don't spray the inside of my garage, however. I have found that a few spiders in the garage translate to significantly fewer roaches and other creepy crawlers even getting close to the doors. In my garden, spiders, praying mantis, and lizards are protected species and welcomed guests. I even put up markers to show where my Golden Orb spiders have strung their webs.

Do I live in a spider free zone? I feel like a rarely see spiders inside- sometimes I see them on my front porch- and I've necer had part control or sprayed anything. It's a non issue for me.

Okay, where do you live because, if you are in a spider free zone, I need to move there IMMEDIATELY! I hate spiders. Scare me to death and despite spraying they are always getting in

Urban legend here says chestnuts keep out spiders. I don't know if it works or not. I have some in my car right now. I also saw a baby spider start to drop down on me from the windshield. I think it's just a legend to be honest.

does the peppermint oil repel or kill the spiders? I have zero desire to kill them, they don't bother me personally, but it would be nice to keep some of them out of my house. They love my bathroom for some reason.

I think it's just a legend to be honest. Similar to Elannah, I heard walnuts in their shells. Place one or two where you might find them - window sills, corners of the room, etc. They say the shells contain a chemical that is toxic to spiders. Never tried this but might be worth a shot.

I may just live in a good house- 12 years ago I lived in another house with a daylight basement and we did get a lot of spiders down there. Maybe people's houses aren't constructed properly or sealed right or something? I don't know but I never see spiders in my house.

They love my bathroom for some reason. As far as I know, it just repels them. I've sprayed them directly and they take off running. I've never found a dead spider carcass, so I think they just don't like it and leave.
