I am retiring at the end of this school year and want to take my parents to the Gulf Coast next January and February (2017). I have no idea how to start looking for a 2 month rental. I want to be far enough south so that the weather is balmy. I would like an area with lots of activity but not a big city.
Does anyone one have any suggestions for good areas to start looking in and once I narrow the search down, how do I find a rental without being able to see it in person? I want to start now so that my options are not too limited. TIA for any help you can send my way.

I can't tell you an area to look at. But my sister in law and her husband usually spend the month of September at the beach in SC. Sometimes they come back in Febuary for another month. She usually looks on vrbo.com for places. You can see photos and read reviews. She picks a different place every year in the same area. She's only run into a problem 1 time. And it wasn't serious, but she did end up getting a refund for that place and renting another place.
edit: they live in NJ, so it is out of the question for them to see it in person. While we live in SC. We are 4 hours from the beach. So we can visit when they are there, but we can't scope out the places for them.

Naples, Florida. Really lovely area. But pricey .

I don't know if it is far enough south, but what about Sanibel or captiva?

We use VRBO.com or homeaway.com you can browse on the map to pick places. That's how we discovered an amazing little beach community right outside of New Orleans. We are headed back for a month in 2017.

Sand Key, FL is a very nice, upscale area tucked between Clearwater Beach & St. Pete. Search VRBO for Lighthouse Towers.

Go as far south as you can. Naples, Marco Island, Ft. Myers, etc. I said this on another thread, but it can actually get pretty cold in Florida and it surprises people. January and February tend to be the coldest time of year-one day can be close to balmy, the next not so much. You will find consistently warmer weather the further south you are-I probably would skip the Clearwater area.
Also, that is smack dab in the middle of high season on the coast, so be prepared for the costs to be a little higher.

We've rented in the Sanibel & Captiva area using royalshell.com In Captiva you can rent houses by the week and in Sanibel by the month. It's a spendy area, especially during peak times, but it is beautiful.

I was also going to suggest Sanibel. If you can afford paradise, this is it!!!

My sister and her family and my dad all live in Englewood, FL. My parents started out vacationing there for the month of November and then bought in 1995. It is a beautiful area, close to a lot of things to do.

We have used VRBO to rent in the Panama City Beach, FL area on the residential west side. It was amazing! How I wish we could have rented for a month! Our vacation was only one week. :-)
Best wishes!

We love Ft Myers Beach. I just rented through Distinctive Beach Rentals and was very pleased with their services and their attention to detail.
I would start by looking there. Search for mid-island. That area is quiet and close to Publix.

Sanibel and Captiva are neighbors to the more affordable Ft Myers Beach.

I am from Sarasota and I would highly recommend Siesta Key, Crescent Beach, Lido Key, or Longboat Key. Siesta Key/Crescent would be my first choice. You could just search for Siesta Key vacation rentals. The rental sites usually have photos of all the rooms so you can actually see what you are committing to. We have stayed at Crescent Arms multiple times (yes, even though we live in Sarasota) and have been very happy there. We have only stayed for one week rentals though.
If you want to stay in Sarasota, but not necessarily right on the beach, you could stay at Sun 'n' Fun. It would be a bit of a drive in to the beach, but it is a nice RV place that also has homes on the property that you can rent for longer periods.
People also often rent out their homes, too. You are more likely to find a home if you come off season.
One thing you need to know about Jan/Feb in Florida is that it is considered "high season." That means the rates are higher. If you could possibly come at a different time, you will get better rates. Insider tip - the best month in Sarasota is May. Rates are cheaper, kids are still in school, it is almost always warm enough to feel summery but it isn't yet mind-blowingly hot. Also, it is before the summer rainy season. We always vacation in May if we are staying in Florida.

If you want "balmy" for January and February you'll want to be as far south as you can be. I live in SW Florida now, in Cape Coral, and love it. We are not right on the beach, but close enough to get there in 15-20 minutes. Sanibel or Captiva are our beaches of choice, but finding a 2 month rental may be hard, you may be too late as many are snow birds that return year after year, and the prices are pretty high. Royal Shell is who we rented from when we used to vacation here, they were very easy to deal with. I do know one person who owns a condo in Cape Coral, on a canal, that rents (we rented it when we were looking for our house, it's very nice) - if you're interested let me know I'll send you the info. All of the beaches from Sarasota to Marco Island are beautiful, you pretty much can't go wrong.

We rented a place in Ft Myers this summer from VRBO and had a really great experience. I know they will rent by the month. We wanted to stay on Sanibel Island, but found they would only rent by the month, and we wanted more than a hotel room. I'm personally more of a Pensacola girl, but it gets cold up in that area during the winter.

Great replies. Thank you! My parents used to go to Pensacola during March and April but I want to get them out of the horrid cold of PA in January and February. We will need a 2 bedroom house or condo preferably with an elevator or on the ground floor. They will want to take their small dog, I'm sure. I would prefer not to go over $3,000 /month if possible. If we are not right on the beach, that's fine but I would like to be able to bike there if possible.
I knew I could count on all of you to get me started on my search. I have 14 months to find the perfect place. Hopefully I am early enough that all of the good deals are not already rented.

We've had good luck with VRBO in both South Padre and Pensacola. I really liked Pensacola since it seemed like a "real place" -- enough beach and tourist, but still "ordinary life". Go to VRBO, create an account and start browsing! We look closely at pictures, see how old they are, read the reviews, etc. -- but so far, we've had good (enough!) luck.

My friend lives in a golf community in Estero Beach near Ft Myers. Some of my other friends go down and rent for a few weeks or longer. It's very nice there when I visit in February and March.

That's how my parents found the condo they stay in at Surfside Beach SC. Also..they rent right from the owners and not the agency that the owner uses. First floor...no stairs
