So happy to see a thread about this here. People on a local FB site keep posting it and the women are all "Wow! Can't wait to get my 36 books!!" Yeah, you should wait by your mailbox.
I won't consider it unethical though, because you would have to be a pretty big dumb ass to actually believe you could mail off one book and get 36 in return.

I have seen it blow-up on Facebook this week. So bizarre. The book thing seems cute enough, but I'd never do it. A- I'd probably break the chain, B- We have so many kid books, we'd probably get repeats and C- I myself do not read paper books.
The holiday gift one? I would never. I just keep thinking "Why would I want 36 cheap $10 gifts laying around my house?!" lol Sounds like a lot of added holiday clutter if you ask me!

I've seen both the book one and the gift one on FB. I responded to both. I don't expect 36 of anything in return. I just like doing them. For me, it's the giving not the getting (and yes, I do give to charities, too.) My only problem is that I've only had one response to doing it, so the chain is going to break. I will not repost or contact anyone personally. I'm not out to badger anyone into doing it. If you want to, do it. If you don't, don't. Doesn't make me think more or less of you if you do or don't.

I hate those things, because they never, ever work like they should. The chain always breaks.
I don't think they are unethical, though.

I also got the $10 gift one on my FB wall from a friend today. Told her no thanks. I've always hated chain letters, etc.

It's unethical because at some point the piper has to get paid. And who's gonna do the paying? It's unethical for the exact same reason pyramid schemes are unethical. If you did the same thing with dollar bills... Just send out 1 and get 36 back, it would be illegal. Someone has to get screwed... It's how the whole thing works. So if you end up getting 36 books, just know that a lot of those people who sent you books or whatever probably weren't as lucky.

It's a chain letter. You can substitute socks, dishtowels, kitchen utensils, candles, etc for the book.
Don't do it. You will be lucky if you get something in return.
