I was diagnosed with ADD. I have had it all my life but my OCD is getting to be a bit much and I saw a psychiatrist yesterday who prescribed a med for ADD. Can't remember the name but I am on the lowest dose. First day taking it and I feel like I am on speed. How can I focus when I feel like I should run a marathon?

Misdiagnosed?
I'd be talking to my psychiatrist immediately. He/she needs to know your symptoms and reevaluate. What kind of evaluation/tests were performed to give the psych an ADD diagnosis?

No. Not misdiagnosed. I'm not really going to go into what tests were done to evaluate but I have tried anti-depressants as well and they don't work. It also may not have been a good idea to have a cup of coffee since the meds are a stimulant. I am on the lowest dose and I am very sensitive to meds and always stay on the lowest or half the dose of any meds I take. I wanted to cut it in half but the pill is a capsule so I couldn't. I will give it another day and if I feel like this tomorrow (without the coffee), I will call her.

Just thing of all the things you can get done today while you are "speeding" lol. Seriously, I do hope it levels ot because that has to be an odd, out of control feeling.

My DD was diagnosed with ADD in 5th grade. She takes Dexedrine, which is an amphetamine and it does not have the effect that you are describing (and never did). I would definitely be talking to the doctor to try some other treatment.

the thing they are trying to tell you...is that people who don't need the medicine feel like they are on speed
people with the ADD - it quiets their minds
quite the opposite of the effects you are feeling
it's not a 'sensitivity to medicine' type thing
you need to mention it to your doctor

I know it's not all fun, but..i miss that feeling. when I was in thyroid manic phases I felt invincible, like wonderwoman, and got so much done! everything was so clear and I felt like I was running on racing fuel. not that I would give up the positive effects being on meds has given me, but it would ne nice just to have a day of that feeling back here and there!

I think it may have been the coffee because I have that feeling of coming down now. My husband is laughing and saying I am on NZT (for those who have watched Limitless). Grr. I love my coffee.

You can buy empty capsules. You could measure out and put half the "beads" in one capsule and half in the other.

Talk to the doctor. We ended up being referred to a specialist for my son, because every ADD med caused negative side effects for him. Over a span of 3 years, the specialist finally said that my son falls under the small percentage of patients who don't benefit from taking ADD meds. Don't give up just because this one medication isn't working. Call the doctor and tell them what you are experiencing. They might suggest that you decrease the dose. Or they may totally change your prescription.

I immediately thought of NZT You should definitely be feeling the opposite of what you are feeling. I hope you get it worked out soon.

My 15 year old daughter was diagnosed with inattentive-ADHD (essentially ADD) earlier this year. We had to try a couple different medications and doses before she felt one that was effective. (She wound up on 40mg of Vyvance - as soon as she started on it, she immediately felt different, in a good way, and it's been an AMAZING difference in her.) She is also on Lexapro for anxiety and depression, which has also helped her a lot.
I would definitely speak with your doctor. Give it a few days perhaps, but if you're still feeling the same way after that, give him a call and let him know what you're feeling. He should at that point tweak your dose or maybe even change you to a different medication. From all the research I've done and groups that I've gotten involved with, it's interesting how different meds work for some and flat out don't work for others. So it might take a while, but you will eventually find the right one for you.
I would not, however, try to adjust your dose on your own (splitting open the capsules, etc.). DD's psychiatrist flat out told me not to do that with capsules, especially time-release ones. It's better just to talk to him and have him adjust the prescription for you.
Good luck... Hopefully once you find the right dose, you'll start to feel vastly different.

There are many different medicines, call your doctor immediately so the two of you can find the correct one.
It's worth it!
Some of the capsules cannot be split. Do your research and call the doctor first.
