DS broke his dominant wrist last night. He has a cast up to his elbow. It can't get wet, so how does he shower?
Any tips or tricks? He's 10 if it matters.

They sell covers at walgreens and stuff. For future reference the extra cash for the waterproof cast is totally worth it!

With my surgery I used a couple of plastic grocery bag and then some Press n Seal. You could try that blue painters tape too. Pain in the ass, I know.

garbage bag and duct tape I broke my arm the day after school got out when I was his age. Garbage bag and duct tape got me through almost the entire summer at the pool! Lol

I used kitchen garbage bags and tape. That way the water does not get inside the cast.

We bought the arm cover from the drug store, and it worked well. I think it was this one.

We just used Press & Seal to completely wrap it. Lots easier than messing with tape/bags.

Thank you! We will head to the drug store soon.
I wish I had been given the waterproof option!

I vote for glad press and seal...put a rubber band around top if you want. or put plastic bag over and use press and seal at the top. great stuff. better than tape.

I wrapped mine in plastic wrap, then tried to keep it out of the water. I never got it wet that way.

10 year old DS broke his wrist this past summer. My SIL is a nurse and she told us to use press and seal wrap around the cast and tucked in the openings. They use it at the hospital where she works.

When my DS broke wrist and elbow many years ago, we were given a bag by the doctor's office - with a strap of some type to hold it tight. Worked well.

Thank you! We will head to the drug store soon. I wish I had been given the waterproof option! You know, I didn't get offered the option either, I had happened to read about it shortly before my son broke his arm and it stuck in my head. It cost me $35 but for the 8 weeks he was in a cast in the summer it was worth every dime!

I don't think the waterproof cast choice is offered in many areas. My son broke his arm 3 weeks before we were to go to Florida and the Bahamas. We obviously wanted a waterproof cast, but the option wasn't available (I live in the Seattle area, so I'd think my location was not the problem). We got him a dry pro with the air pump and it did great. Until it didn't. When it sprung a leak on the last day of vacation. We flew home and had to replace the cast. Apparently, the integrity of the cast is not in question if it gets wet, it's the skin underneath that won't dry and will be prone to infection. Both my kids have broken their dominant arm. We used this cast cover from Amazon for showering: www.amazon.com/Self-wear-Reusable-Travel-friendly-Bandage-Waterproof/dp/B00LM3BNMS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1446587600&sr=8-2&keywords=arm+cast+coverworked like a charm. Both kids could put it on by themselves in seconds and it kept them completely dry as could be. I'd highly recommend it.

I had a cast cover like the one linked. Worked like a charm. I liked it because I could put it on and off myself, and not have to wait for DH to be home to tape up my arm for me in a bag.

Press and seal is a great idea! I'll have to remember that one.
I was going to offer another idea - I had a person tell me that the super long gloves/covers that dairymen (?) use to, um, impregnate/etc. cows work great. Lol! Basically it's a huge long arm cover so they can stick their arms up cow's backsides lol, so it's meant for that purpose anyway. Not sure how easy they are to get, though!

They sell covers at walgreens and stuff. For future reference the extra cash for the waterproof cast is totally worth it! I used one for my hand when I had a cast a few inches above my elbow. Stays on good and not a hassle to get on. p.s. found it on Amazon. They were a PITA to find in my area.

We bought a sort of pricy cast cover that was supposed to be so great he could even swim in it. Only, despite measuring him twice before ordering, it was so tight once on properly that it hurt him and he refused to wear it. (He's 12, BTW.)
So we would start off by putting press & seal wrap all over and around the cast. Then we used 2 plastic grocery bags and a ton of duct tape all around it. Then we very carefully cut all of that off when he was done.
We had to wash his hair for him, though. He'd knell by the tub and we'd wash it before he took his shower. With his hand all bagged up like that he had a hard time doing a good job and because of his age and hair type, his hair gets oily quickly if he doesn't wash it really well.

When I broke mine the best thing was using the orange bags that our newspapers were delivered in..... long and thin so it wasn't all baggy and easy to tape the top closed onto the arm

There are bags for this. I used one with the walking boot I had this past spring. It was great! It fit over the boot, then truly clamped onto my leg so the boot/foot didn't get wet.
It was wonderful. I could shower, although sitting down as I couldn't walk on my foot!!

Thank you! We will head to the drug store soon. I wish I had been given the waterproof option! when my son broke his leg, they didn't tell us about it either. luckily we had been given the heads up from a friend, and asked for it. another $80 but SO worth it for an extremely active, messy 18mos. old in the summertime. I don't understand why it isn't an option given right up front every time!
