I get headaches fairly often. It is also not uncommon for them to last more than one day. I would say that I always have a headache of some kind, whether it is very mild and barely noticeable, to where I feel that I don't know how I will function and seriously think something may be wrong. Last night my headache was very noticeable starting around 4:00pm. I went home and went to bed at about 9:00 because it was really bad and I was tired. Woke up with the same level of headache and it is worsening as the day goes on. I have taken ibuprofen but it isn't helping.
I am wondering if anyone else has headaches like this and if so, what helps them to go away besides ibuprofen?

I have sinus headaches, and migraines. My go to combination is a Goodys powder(can't swallow pills) which has aspirin, caffeine, and acetometaphin. And I take two Sudafed with it and have some protein like sandwich meat, hardboiled egg, or protein bar. Also cool gel eye mask helps. The ones you keep on the fridge. Usually if I can do this and lay down in a quiet room for a bit I can get the headache under control. Usually.

You need to see a doctor. As my neurologist told me, it's not normal to have a headache all the time. I have migraines and I used to always have a headache; it was an odd day if I didn't. I've finally gotten on the right combo of preventatives and no longer have a constant headache. I do have times where I will have one every day for 4-5 days but they are usually weather or menstrual related and go away when I take my medication.

I also usually have mild head pain of some sort, but generally it's just due to tension, and sits in the background. My bad headaches originate in my neck, happen at least once every two weeks, and will last all day. Taking about 600mg of ibuprofen and about 50mg of caffeine together mitigates the pain somewhat, but I really just have to ride them out.
Your headache sounds like it might be something more serious though, if this kind of pain isn't a common occurrence for you. I wouldn't let it go on much longer before seeing a doctor.

I had a a headache hit me Halloween night around 7pm, I know this because it was like a needle had been stuck through my skull suddenly. I went home & took advil & 1 otc sleeping pill. Woke up with the same pain, took 2 excedrin. I was nauseous all day & ended up loosing my "cookies" in the late afternoon. Still had the headache but it was starting to subside, took more advil & 1 more otc sleeping pill. Monday the headache was still there, but not as bad. Tried more excedrin & by the time I left work it was gone, so a good 34 hours. I didn't take excedrin at night because it has caffine in it & that would have kept me awake. I usually get headaches several times a week & they normally last at least 24 hours.

my sister had an aneurysm...if this headache just doesn't feel right go get seen. She had it for a few days. Assumed it was because her BFF's DH had just died suddenly. As the headache got worse she knew something wasn't right. If this describes how you are feeling go to the ER. My sister spent a week in the ICU while they gave her heparin to get the clot to diminish.

I think it depends on what kind of headache it is-- like someone else said, you shouldn't have a headache all the time. But if it's stress or tense muscles in your shoulders and neck, then that could cause a headache which you could have quite a lot of the time, I suppose.
I have sinus headaches sometimes where I've gone to bed with a headache and woken up the next day, but it typically wouldn't last over 24 hours total time, because I'll try to throw as much medication at it as I can during that amount of time. I used to get hormonal migraines, but those have been replaced by sinus headaches caused by shifts in the weather and air pressure-- has anything like that happened recently where you live?

I came to the realization once that I spent probably the first 25 years of my life chronically dehydrated. Once I started drinking more water, I was no longer headache prone. Having said that, if you are sure that isn't the cause, I'd definitely go to the doctor.

I was having headaches on a daily basis (go to bed with one, wake up with one). Sometimes I couldn't tell when one ended and another started. They just seemed to move to different areas of my head. I would also get migraines at least once a week where I couldn't see very well, was sick to my stomach and any light/noise would send me over the edge.
I went to see my neurologist since I have a small brain tumor that has to be monitored every 6 months. I was sure it had grown and causing my troubles, thankfully it hadn't, just possibly rotated more. She also included my neck in the MRI scan and found two herniated disc in my neck. She recommended an orthopedic doctor who recommended surgery for the two disc. As soon as I woke up from surgery, I started crying because I no longer had a headache. The relief was so great, that it really made me realize how long I'd gone with almost constant headaches. That was in February and I'm still doing well with only occasional stress headaches.
Please see your doctor, there's no reason to suffer through daily headaches, even mild ones if there is a fix.

Thanks for the replies. The headaches seem to vary. I have had a few where I did wonder if I was having an aneurism or something because I also had some strong pain down my neck (that was less than a second and then went away), which I thought was strange. When the headaches don't respond to ibuprofen and don't go away with rest, they are pretty intense. I guess I should make an appt to have it checked out.

Yes, go to the doctor. I had what I thought was a migraine when I was about 43. It wasn't, it was a stroke. I lost some eyesight as a result. Make an appointment!

Yes, I would highly recommend seeing the doctor. While my girls and I get migraines, hormonal headaches, weather-related headaches, etc., my one daughter ended up having a Chiari Malformation. She has several meds she can take for her headaches now, and she also gets Botox injections every 3 months. Botox can be given to people that suffer with migraines more than 12x a month I believe. A neurologist would be the doctor you want to see about all of this.
As far as what works besides Ibuprofen, I personally take Excedrin Migraine and I wear an ice pack on my head. Feels absolutely wonderful on those really rough days. Hugs to you!

I am glad that you are going to see a doctor regarding this. There are so many different reasons someone could have a headache, and do many different types of headaches. Many people assume any 'bad' headache is a migraine, but that is not necessarily the case. Other causes such as stress, dehydration, food sensitivities, neurological issues, etc. can also cause headaches.
I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but are you large chested by any chance? I have had chronic migraines since my early 20s, but also used to get almost daily headaches, and back, neck and shoulder pain, until I had a breast reduction. That can also be a source of headaches.
Determining the cause of your headaches will help narrow down what to do to help alleviate them. Migraine medication will do nothing for a headache that is not a migraine, for example. If they are migraines, determining your personal 'triggers' can help control them. Migraines are also often accompanied by visual disturbances, but not always.
Things that I do to help alleviate the pain of a migraine are facial massages, tying a small blanket tightly around my head to counteract the pressure, standing in the shower and letting the spray massage my scalp, face and neck, letting ice or ice cream melt on my molars, and using an ice pack.
I hope that you are able to get to the root cause of your headaches and that you are able to find some relief soon.

I have had mostly migraine headaches my entire life and I take excedrin generic almost every day. I probably get analgesic rebound headaches but I don't care. It is not good to take it every day but I can't risk a headache.
That does not do a thing for sinus headaches though. Only some serious sinus medicine that makes you sleep can kick those.
I have had a headache that lasted 10 days. I have been in the ER many times and hospitalized a few times because my headache related nausea caused severe dehydration.
I've been on just about every headache medicine that can be prescribed. Most of my migraines I know were related to hormones. Since menopause I get them much less frequently and mostly less severely.
The only truly effective curative medicine I ever had was Imitrex and I prefered the nasal spray. You have to be very careful to inhale/sniff it upwards and not let it run down your throat. The tablets were ok unless it was so bad I couldn't keep anything down.
The injectable works wonders but it knocks you out for a day.

I have migraines, usually one every other day on average. However, sometimes I can go for two months without any, and then two months with one every day.
Usually they last a few hours if I take a triptan (Frova) plus 3 Advil right away. If I delay, that could turn into a one-week straight headache. One of my problems is that mine very often begin during the night or early morning, while I'm asleep. By the time I wake up to the headache, I've passed the window of taking meds just in time.
Other things I get during the headaches: very tired, cold, nasal congestion on one side, and sometimes nauseous
My daughter gets migraines and takes Excedrin migraine for hers.

When my hormones are not balances (progesterone especially), I have prolonged headaches, ones that Advil or Tylenol won't touch, but aren't migraines. I know when they last a long time that it is time to see the doctor.

I used to have headaches on a daily basis. Then I lost 210 pounds (Aka an ex husband ) and I can't remember the last time I had a headache. I do know that I didn't remember where I put the ibuprofen because it had been so long! My headaches have disappeared

I just remembered-- one of the managers I work with (who is in his mid-30s) has suffered for years from almost debilitating headaches that appear seasonally in the fall, then disappear again in the spring... apparently they are cluster headaches of some kind. Last year, he finally got some doctors who figured out what they were, so now he takes Rx steroids when 'headache season' rolls around. (I don't know if that prevents them altogether, or just reduces the number of them.) Like someone else said: not every headache is a migraine or from stress, but not every headache is 'nothing' either.

Please let us know what the doctor says. Your headache could be any number of things, many not serious, but you shouldn't suffer. Go and get some relief.

Definitely see your doctor. I have frequent severe headaches, but mine seem to be sleep related. I have mild sleep apnea. If I don't use my CPap every night, by the third day I start getting the headaches again. I also get them if I'm sleep deprived for any reason.
Before I went to the doctor for my headaches, they would last 36-48 hours. I would take 4 ibuprofen, sometimes with a benedryl chaser, and sleep off and on until it was gone. Now I have prescription meds and take them as soon as the headache starts. The headaches are more severe than they were before, but they only last until at most an hour after I take meds.

Definitely see a doctor.
I've had headaches pretty much every day of my life, ranging from a dull ache, to a cluster headache to a migraine. Tried many medications over the years without much success. Then I ended up needing to eat gluten free and discovered that cured a high number of my headaches. I think because it cleared up the inflammation and my sinuses.

I could have written this post last year. So glad you are seeing a Dr. Push for a CT scan or MRI. Excedrin worked for me. Trust your gut! Hugs, Jen

That sounds similar to what I went through. I usually had a dull ache / pain / pressure in my head that I could - live with - I guess. If I didn't have that then I had a full migraine tha would be pounding. It seemed like I was dealing with one of these issues 5/7 days per week.
I finally saw a nerologist. Turns out the dull ache is part of a migraine, and turns out migraine meds are fantastic. They've changed my life. I didn't know that Tylenol and ibuprofphen could make my headaches worse, but it they can.
My migraines have many different causes / triggers, but I would say the number 1 trigger is hormones. I was told that when I go through menopause my migraines will go away.
One thing to note - when I was dealing with docs they noticed that I was under medicated for my Hypothyroidism. When my meds were increased a lot of the dull pain / pressure in my head improved.
Good luck
Paige.

It is not good to take it every day but I can't risk a headache. This is really bad on several levels. Please rethink this and save your liver and kidneys. It's hard to break the cycle of rebound headaches but necessary.

I have a variety of types of headaches, and no real set pattern that I can find. For those of you who have seen someone regarding your headaches, what type of doctor did you see? A neurologist? Someone from a headache clinic? I really need to see someone, but I have no idea who to contact.
TIA
