Beautiful photos! I love the last one. The yellow flower on her headband and the green of the background make her eyes pop!

She is soooo pretty! I am a sucker for photos and open almost any thread with "photos inside" in the title. I especially love the second one, her hands, and the last one. Lisa

Oh what a pretty baby!
I think your photos are lovely...I bought a Canon Rebel when I found out my son & DIL were expecting...but other than a few odd photos, mine are not very good.
I have learned that my Grandson thinks a camera is a toy (he's 15 months) and I can't take many photos when I am alone with him.
I love the one of her hands....and the b&w of her pretty face.

Thanks so much, ladies, I really appreciate the encouragement. I have another session today, and hope to have learned a bit from the last one, and hopefully will again from today. KelleeM that is too bad. Thankfully though we have all the technology we do today that allows us to keep in touch with friends and family who are distant geographically, and can skype/facetime, etc. knotlazy that makes for an expensive toy, lol!

Beautiful pictures! You really should think about doing more photography although I can't imagine the stress of pleasing someone.
High jack: I know it's all the rage to have all the props and big flowery headbands etc. on babies these days. I myself prefer the much simpler, less props more baby pictures. I think many times the beauty of the baby can be out shined by the props. At least for me I find myself looking at the bling before my eyes settle on the baby.
My niece post lots of pictures of her baby on Facebook and I'd like to tell her to take all that shit off her head and it'd be a much more beautiful picture. Am I the only one who feels like this?

akathy I love them! I have since dd was a baby (16 years ago). I am always pleased when moms bring them, and the mom today had some for her baby as well. I imagine at some point they will become 'dated' though. And I know what you mean regarding how they can be overpowering at times. I do love simple, classic baby photos as well. It is a bit stressful taking photos for other people. But I think people are inclined to like photos of their children. I think it will get trickier pleasing adults with photos of 'themselves' though in family portraits. People, women especially, tend to be critical of themselves and often think they do not look good in photos even when other people think they look fine.

I have to say that I agree totally. I didn't like the silly headbands when my DD was a baby 18 years ago, you won't find a single photo of her wearing a headband. ETA: But if the parents like the headbands, that's all that matters. I will admit that I got some "prop" photos done when DD was 6 months old.

Beautiful shots Cathy, absolutely love the black & white and the yellow flower one. I know you won't mind me telling you this because you know how much I love your photos but I find the props in the fourth one rather distracting...too many "things" in the shot that overpower the subject KWIM I think you under value your ability as a photographer, your photos are beautiful

AussieMeg I'd never insist on headbands (or hats, love hats too!) if it wasn't something a parent brought along or seemed keen on themselves, as much as I like them. Ultimately the photos are for them and everyone has their own preferences and vision I know. @dottyscrapper you have always been so kind and encouraging. People have different tastes, that's natural and good. I am a 'the more props the merrier' sort myself. I have pinned a lot of photo ideas that use multiple props, and find myself drawn to them. But then my decorating style is 'these are all my favourite things/aka look at all this wonderful clutter' so it's not surprising! My dh thinks I am too critical of my photos, but I can't help seeing the 'flaws', the little things like an in camera crop that should have been better, or when I missed the focus by even a sliver. On the upside it helps me strive to improve. I really do appreciate how supportive you have been and continue to be. You are actually one of the reasons I began thinking of offering to do photos for others.

Beautiful pictures, but I have to agree with akathy, although I do like headbands on baby girls. My only suggestion would be to pull the bink out of baby's mouth and lose the suitcase and props that don't have a connection to the child. Of course, if your customer wants these things, you will have acquiesce, since they are paying for your service. (And of course if the necklace is grandma's necklace, dad's dog tags, older sibling's blanket, I think it is good to include those props in a simplistic way.) Just my two cents, meant in a constructive, caring way. Not a criticism.

trollie thanks for sharing your thoughts. The shot with the pacifier was actually not one of the 'posed' photos. Baby had just had a bottle and was about to have a wardrobe change, and mom set her down for just a moment. She looked so relaxed and peaceful and you could see her face so clearly without the headband, that I just quickly snapped it. I only had time for one shot before mom picked her up again. It turned out to be one of my favourites, even with the pacifier. But I agree I wouldn't deliberately include it for portraits, although I think it would be fine in lifestyle shots, since it documents something that was a big part of baby's life. I LOVE babies in a vintage suitcase, lol, and won't stop offering that as a prop! I have three, in red, green and blue! Of course, I won't force anyone to use them who doesn't feel the same way, and appreciate the reminder that just because I like something doesn't mean a client will. To me the suitcases represent the journey of life, but to be honest there are other props I also like that have no real relevance or connection to any particular child/family and really don't represent 'anything', I just like the 'look'. I used the green suitcase this weekend actually. And mom brought lots of headbands. I really do appreciate the feedback though! (I'm also a fan of tilted shots, although I do do straight horizon shots as well!)
