What a hugely disappointing season! All four runway shows seemed like epic failures to me.

I'm going to get flamed for this, I'm sure, but want to qualify what I'm about to say with: I AM PLUS SIZED (I'm overweight by a good 40 pounds.) I think Ashley won because they were hoping to appeal to another demographic. They knew her win would get the show more publicity ("wow - a designer for plus sizes won Project Runway!") I didn't love anyone's collection, but I think it was all about PR (public relations) and not PR (Project Runway.) I think, based on the show, Edmund was probably the winner. I still didn't think Ashley's fit all that well - looked to me like shorts were riding up the model's thighs. I loved her use of color and lace and I loved the floral headpieces. But, really? That collection won Project Runway? I couldn't agree more!
I think they planned on Ashley winning from the beginning, and then when it became clear that she was going to struggle they ended up setting Edmund up to have to be "saved". Don't get me wrong, I fully support the idea of promoting fashion in the larger sizes. I just think that they could have made their statement with styles that were actually figure-flattering and appropriate, instead of just upsizing designs that would be questionable for even the slimmer ladies. The last one with all the flowers on it made the poor model look HUGE! And is gluing flowers on a dress acceptable for a PR finalist? (I really don't know - it's possible it could be an accepted practice and I'm just not aware of it)
I'm 44 and I would say normal-sized, although not skinny. I would look horrible in those outfits.
My DD is 16 and curvy but not heavy, and she would also look horrible in them.
I loved her fabrics and the colors and the lace, and some of her ideas were cute. Why couldn't she have used the same ideas without having to show their midriff & underwear??? She could at least have cut the shorts so they didn't ride up and the lining didn't stick out. I wholeheartedly agree with pjaye that " I don't know any plus size women who are into "celebrating their curves" by having them exposed for all to see and hanging out under tiny crop tops" I don't know many "regular-sized" women who would be comfortable in some of those outfits.
Candice - I think she got hosed - thrown under the bus. In their Part 1 critique they took away ALL of her creativity. Totally stripped all of the character out of her collection. The things I saw when Tim visited her and in Pt 1 were really "her". The collection she ended up showing was just...blah. Like a shaved hedgehog. (It was her that had the horribly-fit bustier with the red pants. I felt sorry for the model.) I was glad she ended up using one of the cherry blossom pieces. I felt like her collection was definitely cohesive and creative initially, but that was lost when she had to pare it down. It ended up being stuff that is already out there, I don't see many sales of those particular outfits. I do, however, see a very bright future for her when she returns to designing for "her" and not for PR. I loved that she had her kids there, and her Mom was wiping tears. That was awesome.
Edmund - same as Candice, although he did end up standing up for himself & keeping some of his favorites. I personally loved the TP dress and the ruffled black dress. Some of the others were repetitive, although all looked classy & elegant. I felt like he was really held back. I can also see him being successful in the red carpet genre.
Kelly - her collection was definitely my favorite. Unique, creative, totally her!!! Sure it was glittery & retro, but that was the charm of it for me. I loved how she tied it all together by mixing fabrics between the outfits, and the glitter shoes added to the cohesiveness. It was obvious that she had taken great care in the planning, and the coordination was intentional. I wish she had left in more of the fanny packs. This collection was the clear winner for me, and I would be shocked if she hasn't already made sales.
I think Kelly's pregnant, I noticed an obvious change in her when Tim went to visit her, and even more so in the finale episodes. Will be interesting to see the after-show next week.

Bothers me that the "plus" size models were probably a size 12-14-16. I'm not sure where "plus size" starts, but it definitely isn't as small as some of the models. That being said, her designs were nice and obviously targeted to a younger audience.

I'm not a plus size, but I didn't consider any of Ashely's models a true plus size. Ashley could not wear any of the garments she sent down the runway. I was disappointed in her collection, I feel it was a cop out for true plus size women. I was expecting a lot better from a plus size designer.

The one think I keep thinking about is this. As a 43 year old plus size woman I wouldn't wear any thing in Ashley's collection....which I've stated. BUT..... Maybe there are some plus size 23 year olds who would want the option. As much as I'm not a lace person I do love color. So some confident 20 year old may want to rock those see through looks! Bright Vibrant and confident!
I'd also like to say that Candice had a model on her show that was WAY TO THIN!! She gives models the bad name for being toooo thin. She had the pants and bustier shirt. It was OVER the top!

The plus size models were the appropriate size for the industry. Yes that's around a size 14. They were also all pretty perfectly proportioned. And to me that is the problem with Ashley's collection - it was just a bigger normal fashion show. I want a plus size issues addressed. Some are "apples" some are "pears". Seriously. Ashley is an apple - I didn't see her in a crop top and see through skirt with granny panties. If you aren't going to wear it as part of the collection then when? The rest of them dressed off their collection.

I watched threads and recognize some of the junior designers. Some on threads were quite impressed with themselves. I wonder if any will push back with Tim?

Just finished watching.
I thought Edmund and Candice both got ripped off. BIG TIME. The judges stifled them to make way for Ashley. I don't think Kelli was ever in the running to be honest. I think she was sent to the finale just to make it look legitimate. They were NEVER going to choose a retro collection. They always talk about "fashion FORWARD" and MODERN...Kelli's was neither. It was 70's and 80's. Nobody would buy a fanny pack in glitter...seriously?
Ashley's collection was not good. When they were gushing over it and Heidi and Carrie said they would wear her pieces, I was like "YEAH RIGHT!!!" When would they EVER wear that? Such bullshit.
Out of all the collections last night, I think Edmund should have won based on the collection itself. I thought his was so well made, looked great on his models and the dresses were beautifully cut and wearable. Candice's was fashion forward (as they like to throw around) but unrealistic. She never should have changed her style for them.
I hate that both Edmund and Candice sacrificed their true selves for the judges. They should have just done their thing and left it alone. It's their STYLE...their brand, I would have never changed it that much for sure. They did set them up to fail.
Be curious to see who gets popular and who sells more from this. I'm sure Edmund will be successful and I think Candice could design for Broadway and be very successful. Kelli could design for figure skaters and pageant girls and make a niche for herself there.
Not sure where this will go for Ashley. I can't see anyone wearing her clothes that were shown last night.

I will throw my hat in with the conspiracy theorists and agree that Ashley was "escorted" through the last half of the season and that Edmund was eliminated-saved so Ashley could stay and win without ever having been eliminated. Plus, we got the feel-good story of always-the-bridesmaid Edmund. Win-win. And Deli-Kelly! Poor Candice was the equivalent of a PR emasculated afterthought.
I would love to see Candice's hoop dress walk down the runway - and her wooden contraption.
Isn't it amazing how much better everything looks with music, lights, and (mostly) good models? I actually enjoyed Kelly's hair-glitter-headphones show - even though I don't like the designs. And I agreed with Heidi that that faux wood dress looked cool.
I must go sit quietly and think about my Heidi mind meld for a bit.

I'm tired of the "who would wear that?" from the judges. um. Runway isn't real life. It's supposed to be a bit of "Who would wear that?" Although I don't think Ashley's should have won I do think with a lining many of her pieces were wearable. But then they were all a bit mother of the bride. I like Kelly but her aesthetic was always a bit low rent, throw away clothing with regards to runway. Edmund needs to find his muse. He reminds me of Ben De lisi in his understanding of the woman's body. What Candace does she does well, but it all has a bit of bondage gear/dominatrix vibe going on... hey! I think I worked out where the SO was! chained in the basement!

Why can't women love their curves and show them off, rather than finding ways to try to work around them, hide them, etc. Maybe this type of collection will open a door for that. I think there is a place for both -- plus-size fashion that every woman can wear, and plus-size fashion for trendsetter women who want to push the edge.

If Ashley wants people to wear it she should lead by example. I didn't say plus size couldn't wear it. My question is why didn't Ashley wear it? I didn't find her designs to be trendsetting. Heck as a plus size I want to blur the lines and look like I am wearing what the skinny peeps are not my own fatties only fashion.

Another here who was very disappointed in Ashley's win. I didn't see anything innovative and some fit very poorly. I loved almost everything Edmond showed. I don't think it was the most original final collection but the craftsmanship and beauty won me over. Crappy season overall.

It's not PC to say but high fashion and plus size just don't go together. A designer can't simply make larger sizes for a plus size collection and have it be attractive because we have been so cultured into the thinking that high-fashion must equal stick models.
Even Ashley failed at designing for a plus size woman--the whole zipper placement fiasco. That was an amateurish mistake from someone who was showing at New York Fashion Week.
As a woman who was once a size 24...and who is now a size 12...and is 42...there has never been a time in my life where I would wear something with a sheer lace midriff or granny panty under lace. The concept shows just what a departure fashion is from real life. Ashley's being used. I hope she is well paid.
What the hell is "Mexico City in the 50s"? How is that anything more than the Chiquita Banana lady?
I'll never take Project Trainwreck seriously again.

First, I haven't read a single post on this thread as I'm just now watching the end and didn't want my opinions swayed.
I HATE bringing guest judges in for the finales. You haven't seen a dang thing all year, why does your opinion count for the winner?
I thought Candace's collection was the most cohesive and showed EXACTLY who she was as a designer. I don't understand when Nina said she didn't know who she was.
Halfway through the season I knew Kelly was going to the finale from the way the judges treated her. And I HATED her collection. I did not get it at.all. I liked a lot of her stuff during the season, but the finale, ugh.
From episode three I knew Ashley was going to win. She should have been voted off SO MANY TIMES, but they wanted that plus sized collection in the finale and to win. Sorry, but I know no plus sized person who would wear sheer and crop top.
I will wait and see how all the off the show comments from Tim Gunn shake out, but I may be finished with the show. The judges are just horrid anymore.
........
Okay, I've read it all.
I agree they knocked Candace down and she shouldn't have doubted herself, but she was never going to win. She should have just gone for it.
I forgot to mention Edmond ~ pretty clothes, but boring.
And a few of Ashley's models watching just...strange. The first one especially. I don't know how to describe it.

That was terrible. I agree that it seemed completely set up, every single one of those collections was better and more fashion worthy than Ashely's. But I thought she should have been off the show a while ago anyway.

After seeing the runway show, i had Edmund first then Candice, Kelly and then finally Ashley as a far distant forth so I knew she'd be the winner, lol.
Edmund's collection was just beautiful. If I was young, thin and rich, I would have every one of his dresses in my closet.
The judges were really harsh with Candice. What she put out was completely her. There were some really beautiful pieces in her collection.
I love Kelly. She has such spunk and I love her originality. I wish she would have won over Ashley.
I think no matter what Ashley put out, she was set up for the win to make history by being the first plus size designer on PR. I love Ashley as a person but I hated her entire collection. It was ill fitting, not flattering at all and had zero originality.
I think they need to fire Zac and Nina.
