For me, when I think back to basics, I look back to when I first started scrapbooking. I was a SU! Demonstrator first. So no surprise that my layouts had cardstock, stamping, and some sort of technique. They were quite simple. And they were often event themes. Any embellishments would be homemade or stamped. For this, challenge I used versamark to watermark on the navy cardstock before putting down my matt. The “remember” and graduation hat were gold embossed. I’ll include the program from the graduation in a 8.5x11 page protector opposite the layout. NC15-Ch1 by Lisa Davolt, on Flickr It was kind of fun to go back to my basic beginning. And it was really hard not to search through patterned papers. lol. Your turn! Tell me! Show me!

Love it lisadv. And this could not be a better challenge for me to start the event. I am all about the basics, that is my passion.
So, looking back at my first scrapbook page (what made me begin scrapbooking in the first place) I realize that I really love simple. Just a photo, a beautiful piece of patterned paper and a just a bit of embellishment.
My process is that I create a layout and then I order the prints, so I hope that my entries will be acceptable. I will print the photo just on cardstock to temporarily adhere to my layouts for this crop, but I will not have the "true print" as I order those after I complete many layouts.
I know the exact photo I want to use for this, and I will post my entry (if I can figure out how) in the morning. lisadv - let me know if you post that video of how to post to the gallery and link. thank you.

Maribeth Glad you like it. I'm more than ok with not having a true print. I'll let you know when I post the video. I still have to pull it from my phone. It's suppose to sync with the computer automatically, but has decided not to today. Typical technology.

Fun! Your layout is classic. Love it! Back to basics for me is probably crazy patterned paper and sticker sneezes. Ha. I'll have to think how I can calm that down into a page that works for my style now too

Well if I think of my first ever layout it was at a CM party where I cut half a dozen photos of my cat into various shapes and stuck them on a page with two strips and two triangles and then did next to no journaling. I have an idea of how I might execute that in a way that would fit better with my current style.
If I were to tell you what I now think are the basics I would probably quote Ali and say "words + pictures".

Well I actually had to real myself in on this. I thought I was so basic. I stared pulling out washi, ribbon, doilies, etc etc etc, and I was suppose to be returning to basics. Away went the product and I ended up with a great basic page. maribeth, this is so pretty. I'm loving the little flower on both of your pages. And the label holder on your first scrapbook page is great. Is it a punch, a manual or an electronic die cut? I really like it and want some now.

So sad I have no info to put in the title, as there was nothing on the photo and no one in hubby's family seems to know who the people are. That is why it is sooooooooo important to document.

maribeth - your first page is about a million times better than mine. I can definitely see where your inspiration has come from in your updated version. Off to leave you some love in the gallery.

Thank you Chinagirl - I have always doubted my scrapbooking abilities, I scrapbook because I enjoy it and because I believe that the memories need to be documented and preserved, but not because I think I am any good at it.

I made a basic card. Used red, blue and yellow because those were the first colors I started with and had a lot of. At the time I didn't have brads so I used a hole puncher on my paper ( which I used on each side of the image). I had taken out some cheese brads and flowers to add but decided not to use it since I didn't have that stuff before.

For me, this was really basic and simple. Cut photos into squares and mat, chalk edges of mats with white. Trace and cut palm tree on black paper. Adhere all to a sheet of Paperhouse Beaches of the World background paper. No title, as the photos speak for themselves, but if I were to put a title on it, it would read "Friday Night Lights", I did write the date on the back. This is a weekly occurrence for us, except we were actually at the beach instead of watching from our lanai. I am trying to fill in some gaps in my chronological scrapbooks with pages, and this will be one of them. 6-21 Friday Night Lights by sbartist, on Flickr

sbartist I actually thought the black palm trees were part of the background paper design. I think they're the perfect embellishment for this page.

I kept this one super simple. My first page was mostly filled with photos with just a couple of words and two strips of pp but in this case it's one of washi and one of twine.

Chinagirl828, this is stunning! Is there a white die cut under Colosseum to give a bit more depth? It's very subtle but also adds just the right touch. Love the washi.

It's a leafy wreath shape cut from vellum. It reminded me of the crowns you often see the roman emperors wearing in the tv special re-enactments. Well spotted!

I've loved using lots of patterned paper on my layouts since I first began scrapbooking. This one is pretty basic, just paper and photo.

oaksong, great photo choices for that fabulous photo! Lovely. Thanks. I love this photo. It was taken by a professional photographer, not me. I can almost hear my daughter singing when I look at it.

When I think of basics, I think of the days when my stash fit under my bed in a box and all I had was cardstock. So, here is my ultra-basic layout using just card stock and some hoarded KI Memories alphabet soup for the title. I wanted the photos to stand out because I love the colors. Thank you for the challenge!
