DD is going to Italy on a school trip. She will need to use her laptop, charge phone etc. What kind of adapter does she need? Some are "adapters" but have dire warnings about voltage. Suggestions?

Most modern electronics just need an adapter. They're sold all over the world so they're made for different voltage. She can look at the charger for each item she's planning on taking to see the voltage range and compare to the country's system. Now hair dryers, curlers and straighteners are a whole different story. Many of those will not work and may not work with an adapter. I've seen my mil fry many an adapter trying.

An *adaptor* has American style socket on one side and an Italian style "pin" on the other side so she plugs her device into the American slots then plugs the pin side into the wall socket.
HOWEVER!!! American standard household voltage is 110. Italian standard house voltage is 220. The over abundance of voltage will cause her devices to spark and burn out. She needs either devices that are dual voltage (many are these days so read the owners manual) OR she will need a voltage converter. If her devices are dual voltage she only needs the adaptor. If her devices are NOT dual voltage she will need a voltage converter instead of an adaptor (the voltage converter will have the proper sockets/plugs on it)

You can plug your iPhone in with just an adapter anywhere. I rarely need a converter for my laptop, it's rated from 90-240. She should obviously check the specific electronics she's using, but the vast majority won't need a converter.
