Searching for good, tried & true, good protein recipes, soups, stews, to feed approx. 50 people.
Our neighbourhood is starting up the winter lunch programme. Good protein, tasty food with some flavour to help these people out.
Thanks.

I had a book one time called cooking for a crowd. But honestly call an older church and ask for help.
Please, the taco bar idea doesn't give older people the warm fuzzies, neither does the baked potato bar.

I am not a fan of Mexican food. Relying on the tried & true recipes. I live in Canada and have never been to a place where there is a taco bar nor a baked potato bar. I can't image eating "walking tacos" as they sound really gross.

Anything with rice and beans makes a good cheap meal.
Lentils are also cheap easy to prepare and tasty.
Chicken and Dumplings
Good Ole Spaghetti with meat sauce
Of course the first thing that comes to mind is soup.
This is the first soup that came to mind, It's called Steak soup because you use ground sirloin. You can use regular ground beef. I put it into a recipe adjuster to come up with 50 servings.. so the numbers are a bit odd I am sure you can use 66 oz. ground chuck.. or even 5 pounds. 4 cups onions etc.
It is filling and really yummy
Steak Soup for 50
66 2⁄3 ounces ground chuck 4 1⁄4 cups onion, chopped 4 1⁄4 cups celery, chopped 4 1⁄4 cups carrot, chopped 33 1⁄3 ounces butter 8 1⁄3 cups flour 41 2⁄3 cups water 8 1⁄3 teaspoons Accent seasoning 4 1⁄4 teaspoons pepper 8 1⁄3 tablespoons beef base 8 1⁄3 cups tomatoes, chopped 12 1⁄2 teaspoons Kitchen Bouquet 8 1⁄3 cups mixed vegetables
directions Brown and drain ground chuck. Set aside. Pan boil onions, celery, and carrots. Set aside. ( I saute them... who wants to boil vegetables....) Melt butter in a 2-quart pan. Add the flour and mix well. Stir in water until thickened. Stir in the Accent, pepper, beef base, and tomatoes. Cook for 1 more minute, stirring constantly. Stir in the Kitchen Bouquet, all of the vegetables, and the ground chuck. Cook on medium, heat for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve.
I also add Worcestershire sauce.

One of my faves. .
Pork ( I use pork loin because the is basically no fat). And sauerkraut Sprinkled with caraway or fennel.
Just dump it in a crockpot. Cut the pork to fit. Low cook all day. The longer kraut cooks the better it is.
Serve with butter beans or Lima beans. And small roasted potatoes. If you need bread offer pumpernickel Two good size loins should be enough. A couple of restaurant size cans of kraut.
I am hungry.

I am not sure if this will be at all helpful, but I'm also in Canada (Nova Scotia.) I work in child care. A few years ago, the Government had a program called 'Strive for Five' We used some of the recipes in our centre, but I also believe they were used in certain elementary schools. Although they focus on Vegetables and Fruits, they are cost-minded recipes that aim to use local produce as it is in season. I'm attaching a link to the large quantity recipes.
