When I was in 5th/6th grade (1958-59) we lived in Napa for 18 months while my dad was on the commissioning crew of a submarine at Mare Island. One Saturday my mom and I got all dressed up and took a Greyhound bus into San Francisco. We had a blast ~ shopping and eating lunch in a fancy (to me) restaurant. I look back on that day and love the memory with my mom.

I have mentioned here before that Little Oscar (of Oscar Mayer Weinermobile fame) was a family friend. He and the Weinermobile were in all our local parades. I got to sit inside the Weinermobile once. I was probably 4 or 5 at the time. My kids had the pleasure of meeting him before he passed away when they were little.

When I was 10 years old, we went to Three Rivers Stadium for a Pittsburgh Pirates game. My dad took us up to the press box, where we gave someone outside a note for the radio announcer, Lanny Frattare. We wanted Lanny to mention our grandfather, who was a huge Pirates fan and listened to every single game.
And he did! He gave a shout out to my Papaw from his grandkids who were at the game. A few of his neighbors even called to see if it was him the announcer was referring to. He was so excited to be mentioned.
I just remember how much fun it was to plan that and keep it a secret, then to see how happy it made him.

Part childhood and part teenager memory here: when I was growing up in the 80's we had a Christmas tv-show with 24 episodes. The show was about a shoecobbler, and they would air one episode every day up til Christmas Eve. The cobbler was an old man, and he would do a few things around his shop and then he would show short cartoons. I loved that show! I think every child who lived through the 80's in Norway have very fond memories of Cobbler Andersen Then, in the mid-90's I worked at a local radio station. Just an afternoon job, but it was great fun, and the money was decent. One day, the actor who had played Cobbler Andersen came in to do an interview. He was probably in his late 80's at the time. He had his wife with him aswell. And I went FULL FANGIRL on the poor man! I just started rambling on how much I LOVED him as the Cobbler, and how he was one of the best things about Christmas and I think I had tears in my eyes the whole time. He was very nice, and very gracious. He wrote me an autograph too! I think it's still at my parent's house. The actor was one of those actors who had been around for decades, and one of the most famous actors in Norway, starting his career in 1928. He was a legend. And it was amazing to meet a legend. I will cherish that fangirl-moment for the rest of my life. He passed away in 2008, at the respectable age of 93. I think this memory came to mind because we are approaching the holidays. You can get all 24 Cobbler Andersen-episodes on DVD now, and I will introduce it to my children this year!

I stayed a good portion of one summer with my aunt because she needed a sitter for the kids. My aunt is a like a modern day pioneer woman who lived way out in the country. I was around 12. She taught me to drive, cook, introduced me to Lord of the Rings. We raised chicks, slept outside to watch meteor showers and played in the barn. One of my best childhood memories.

When I was very little there was a movie being filmed in my hometown. The movie is 'Raintree County' and all the stars lived in local homes for the duration of the filming. I met Elizabeth Taylor (I think I might remember meeting her but it could be just my parents talking about it) but I do remember telling my sister that I wanted to have purple eyes just like that pretty lady. I do have a vivid memory of meeting Lee Marvin who was also in the movie. I told him that I was going to marry him because he was almost as tall as my Daddy.

Sobbed at the end.

When I find it on TV I stop whatever I am doing and watch it.
