At this time of year restaurants always have these delicious creamy soups - pumpkin, butternut squash, parsnip, carrot. I never seem to learn - I'm almost always repulsed and disappointed because when they arrive they are yucky gross sweet instead of savory. When did the world get together and vote on this? Brown sugar, apples, maple syrup, etc. are all wonderful things, but please don't put them in my damn soup!
Thank you.

I felt that way after trying the carrot humus that was served at a party. It was sweet and icky. I generally love humus, and I adore carrots, but the two combined are just not right.

I agree with you - for the most part. I want a savory soup to be savory. But lately I've been thinking of a delicious chilled raspberry soup that I was surprised by how much I liked it. But I was expecting that one to be sweet so I am ok that it was!

Pumpkin soup is my very favorite of all soups. I don't ever think of it as being sweet though. Maybe I use too much salt and pepper!

I agree - usually. Carrot, butternut squash and some tomato soups are just too sweet.
I make a Pumpkin Stew that along with normal stew ingredients has dried apricots, prunes, brown sugar and Marsala in it, but it also has cinnamon and the beef has been "flamed" with bourbon so it's savory and sweet.

I recommend never ordering watermelon soup if that is the case.
More for me!

I'm right there with you, I don't mind a tiny hint of sweetness in something like carrot and coriander (cilantro) soup, but anything more than a hint is yucky.

I recommend never ordering watermelon soup if that is the case. More for me! Cold fruit soups I would expect to be sweet, though. That's different.

And cornbread should never be sweet!! (oh no, I love sweet corn bread. ) I can go either way with corn bread, but I make a really delicious spicy chili and I always make a sweeter cornbread to go with it, they really complement each other.

And cornbread should never be sweet!! Omg that's exactly what I thought as I read OP! And I agree about the sweetening of the autumn soups. I don't drink coffee so never got into the pumpkin spice latte trend. Is it sweet? Did I write correct name? Could that have influenced popularity of sweet soups?

Do not eat the dessert in a real Chinese restaurant, usually some sort of sweet soup like red bean or tapioca soup. Yuck. I can only eat it because i grew up with it.

And cornbread should never be sweet!! I love savory soup. Tomato and basil has become my favorite. My cornbread has to be sweet or it's too bland. Now Mexican cornbread is the best.

Yes, pumpkin spiced lattes are ridiculously sweet.

Sweet soup is the worst. It's always a terrible surprise. I don't get the pumpkin spice thing either to be honest, as everything it's made with is just too damn sweet. I've been making Emeril Lagasse's African Peanut soup. If you haven't had it before, try it. It's delicious.

I make them both ways--savory and the sweet, but not because of added sugars, but because of roasting the root veggies before puréeing them or adding them to soup !

Pumpkin soup is my very favorite of all soups. I don't ever think of it as being sweet though. Maybe I use too much salt and pepper! This is me too. I've made several pumpkin and butternut squash soups, canned and from scratch, but none are sweet. I use salt, pepper, and some rosemary in them also.

I like sweet soups. I'm a big fan of panera autumn squash soup. And once at Disney world i had a strawberry soup that was amazing.

I won't say "never" becuase there are a few fruit/desserty types of soups that are sweet and tasty. But in general, if it is an appetizer or a main course type of dish I don't like sweet soups. I started making my own tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches because the canned tomato soups are way to sweet.

I make a great crab and corn chowder. It's a little sweet, but mostly savory.

I don't think I've ever had sweet soup before. But I feel this way about spaghetti sauce (yes I buy it in a jar, I'm not a perfect pea). I can only find one "no sugar added" brand and it's hard to find.
