I don't think I've ever had sweet soup before. But I feel this way about spaghetti sauce (yes I buy it in a jar, I'm not a perfect pea). I can only find one "no sugar added" brand and it's hard to find. I hate sweet spaghetti sauces (because I also will buy the pre-made sauce.)By hate, I mean I would rather never eat spaghetti ever again if I have to buy a sweet sauce. I used to add salsa to cut down on the sweetness, but then I found the Hunts brand in the can. In my Publix they are WAYYYYYYY up on the top shelf, in the corner so I don't think they are very popular, but the garlic and herb one isn't sweet at all. It is probably one of the least expensive brands too. I still spice it up when I get home, but it has no sweetness to it at all. You may want to give it a try and see if it works for you. It is the same company that cans tomatoes, tomato sauce/paste/puree and I always wonder if that is why it isn't sweetened. ETA: bc2ca I just read you hate the sweet sauces too...

I agree with you. I prefer squashes, turnips, and carrots to be savoury, not sweet and cloying. When I went to France with my former high school French teacher and my mom, friends of my teacher invited us to stay a few days with them. Madame X took us around her area sight seeing and also took us to the local Farmer's market, etc. She was thrilled that I loved to cook and invited me to cook with her. She made the best homemade carrot soup. Super easy and delicious. I'll have to search around for the recipe. I do remember the carrots were cooked in homemade chicken stock along with fresh thyme and was then pureed. The carrots were fresh from the farmer's market and great quality--heirloom, thin ones because the large ones are not as tender, the green tops were cut off because they such water from the roots. I do like corn chowder with sweet corn, but I don't want the other ingredients to be sweet. I like how the sweet corn mixes with the savoury broth and potatoes. I don't mind fruit soups, but I'm expecting those to be sweet. I do like sweet corn muffins and my MIL's corn "souffle" which is actually jiffy corn muffin mix with creamed and sweet corn and lots of cheddar cheese--no sour cream. It's very muffin like instead of creamy like other corn souffle casseroles. Actual cornbread should be savoury. I like the kind with some sweet corn kernels added, but only when the batter doesn't have added sugar. I am also not a fan of the Pumpkin Spice drinks. I don't like how thick the syrup is. I have gotten the Cinnamon Dolce, but I'm not a fan of how thick the caramel syrup is. Both of these drinks also have a lot of calories. I realized that the Cinnamon Dolce was a combo of caramel and cinnamon syrup. I love the Viennese coffee from Coffee Beanery, so now I just add Cinnamon syrup to my mocha or latte. The drink isn't as thick or sweet and the spice of the cinnamon works well with the milk and chocolate syrup. Dh found this De'longhi Magnifica Espresso Machine as an open box item at Sam's Club earlier this year for $250. When I was in Sam's Club this past week, there were several of these machines for $500. Dh and I have been wanting a really nice espresso machine for several years and decided to get one for a joint anniversary present. We never bought one before because they were so expensive or difficult to use. We did buy a K cup machine a few years ago, but we both prefer espresso. We have saved so much money by not going to Starbucks all the time that the machine has paid for itself. The machine will grind whole beans or use powdered espresso. We buy whole beans from a local roaster and Illy ground espresso from our local Sur la Table. I love maple syrup and caramel on pancakes, waffles, etc. but am not a fan of sweet meat entrees, soups or sides, like sweet potato casserole. I only like sweet ingredients when there's another ingredient that cuts the sweetness, like an acid, spices, or alcohol. My cousin made a sweet potato casserole with bourbon pecan topping that was amazing. It wasn't cloyingly sweet, and the pecans gave a great texture to the creamy sweet potatoes.

I hate anything sweet in my main courses especially meat dishes. Apart from a teaspoon of sugar in some Asian type dishes to balance the flavour, fruits and sugar have no place on my dinner plate. The one think I will never 'get' is honey on chicken...makes shudder thinking about it.
Pumpkin soup is not naturally sweet, even when the pumpkin is roasted. The soup is sweet because people add sweet ingredients to it. The other day there was a thread on "Autumn Soup" and a link to Pinterest of some copy cat recipes, I had a look though because I'm always interested in new variations, but after looking through several recipes, all included things like honey, apples, apple juice, cinnamon etc. Some even had a 1/4 cup of sugar! I also noticed some recipes using a can of pumpkin puree, I bet at least some of those brands have added sugar too. I gave up & decided to stick with what I usually do. If people are adding those ingredients to a pumpkin soup, then it will taste sweet.
I make mine with either a veg or chicken stock, sometimes I roast the pumpkin, but usually not, just chop it up and boil it in the stock, I also add one cut up potato, a couple of cut up carrots, a large onion roughly chopped and a crushed clove or two of garlic. Other seasoning I use is freshly ground pepper (there's plenty of salt in the stock already) smoked paprika, parsley (fresh if I have it), and a dash of nutmeg. It's definitely not sweet when I make it.

anxiousmom, I am with you on sweet spaghetti/marina sauces! Hunts is our family secret. Sometimes we add to it, but the chunky veggie version is perfect as is. I do love a good butternut squash soup, but I don't think that's particularly sweet. I've had pumpkin soup that was not sweet as well. I do not appreciate cream based soups in general, whether they are sweet or not.

I did not grow up with sweet cornbread. However, I lived in Georgia for 6 years, sweet is the only way I like it now.

There's one soup I like that has a lot of sweetness to it. It's a lamb stew with carrots, dates, and cinnamon, but the sweetness isn't overpowering. It balances the savory elements, as another Pea noted.
