Is it a good painting? Does it actually look like him or is it one that only the artists mother would say is good?
I still think it's weird.

Unless he's a member of a royal family, no. Can you explain how he came to acquire a painting of himself? I truly never thought of commissioning a painting of myself or anyone else. Huh. Commissioning paintings of family members - separately and together - is not uncommon in the south. I can name any number of families who have a painting of a single person hanging in their home -- over a fireplace or in other places. My parents had one done of me as a teenager. It hangs in my mother's apartment.

I'd think someone had an inflated value of self-worth if I saw their portrait hung prominently in their home, especially in the absence of similar portraits of close family members.

I know a LOT of people who have commissioned portraits hanging over their mantles. Sometimes it is the kids, sometimes it is of the whole family, sometimes it is a single person. It's fairly common here. My favorite one is the one my friend has-it was done right after she had her first daughter and is of the baby, her, her mother and her grandmother. Her grandmother passed right after it was completed and it such a lovely portrait of four generations of women (or rather three woman and an eventual woman.)

In the camp of NEED TO SEE THE PAINTING!!!
I remember the first time I walked into my in laws' house being scared by the giant poster-sized wedding photo they displayed. I vowed never to hang a picture of myself as the first thing you see when you enter my home.
We were gifted (and I am not joking) a larger than life canvas print of our faces from our wedding. We hang it very rarely if the person who gave it to us is visiting. I woke up in the middle of the night and it scared the $%&^ out of me. It now lives under the bed to scare away the monsters.

Sorry I didn't get back to this earlier, we were out enjoying the gorgeous day. First of all, DH doesn't have a painting (yet ). I came into a conversation where he & a friend were discussing what image they would use if they could convince the wives to hang a painting over the fireplace. DH is definitely a casual guy and would use a photo of himself roasting a lamb or doing something active (hiking, kayaking, etc.) and his friend was insisting they should be immortalized in formal suits & ties (both are business owners that rarely wear a suit & tie). Thankfully the George Costanza pose never came up . The conversation was triggered by this photo. I didn't want the thread to divide along political lines and was interested in whether it is a regional thing to have a portrait like this displayed. FTR, I think the one in the link is more suited to an office than the formal living room and, if I ever considered putting something like that up in my house, it would be a family portrait.

to me it would be odd if other people lived in the home and there were no other paintings displayed as prominently elsewhere. what is he doing in the painting? is he on a horse? is he posing like a president? does it look like a company newsletter photo? i guess it all depends on the pose too.
