DH wants to hang a painting of himself over the fireplace in the living room.
Any thoughts?

I have a painting over the fireplace in my living room. It is a traditional place to hang one........ You seem against it, why?
eta: Oh, if HIMSELF.......... mmmmm...... probably not. That seems rather self centered to me. Why not a photo of the whole family?

He can hang it over his throne in the bathroom.

My mother in law has a painting of herself from a glamour shot hanging above her fireplace at her house. It kills me every time I look at it.

I'd delegate that to the garage.

He can hang it over his throne in the bathroom. Ok, I just laughed so loudly that my husband came out from HIS throne to ask what was so funny.

I dunno, I have mixed feelings about this. I would say first off, it depends on the painting. But secondly, why is it "self centered" to have a beautiful painting or photograph of yourself in your home? It's usually women frankly, but this annoys me so much. They won't take a photo of themselves looking beautiful, but they'll have photos of their kids all over, like the kids are their entire world (and I don't think kids should be our entire world) and put themselves last. #theworldofglamourphotography

To ME, that is reserved for either a mirror, decor of a photo/canvas of the family (In our case, it would be just of me and DH, as there are no kids), not just one person, male OR female.

the fireplace is in the HOME. If the OP doesn't want it there, if it looks trashy or goofy, then I am ok with it. But let's say that they are both ok with a painting of one person over the fireplace, I don't think it should be called self centered to do so.... anywhere in the home. That's JMO.
I'd like to see the painting too.
I've thought of doing a painting of my husband and myself. I don't know where I'd hang it though, it's got a pretty big TV to compete with. lol

To ME it is self centered to put a large painting/photo of ONE person (self) there when more than one person resides in that home. When more than one person lives in a space the focal point of the spaces should reflect that (obviously imo). Single person portraits in less prominent areas don't feel the same self centeredness to me. But, my ex was very narcissistic.. the world revolved around him and only him.

I don't see that. The fireplace is a focal point in the house. A part that is seen all of the time. I have photos all over the house, but I would never put one of just me on over the fireplace, and I would not like one of DH there, either. Anywhere else in the house is fine with me.

I can only speak for myself, but I have zero desire to walk by a photo of me everyday. I know what I look like . I don't care if it's one where I'm looking awesome or ugly. It's something I could not care less about. FTR, I currently don't have pictures of my kids on display either. When I do, it's a 5x7 size at the most. Ironically my youngest will be my entire world the rest of my life but no photos of him to be seen in my home. OP, We must see the painting! I have a cousin who is a professional photographer and she does these amazing portraits that are a hybird of a photo and a painting. I don't understand how it works, but the details are amazing!

I read the OP as "DH wants to hang a painting himself over the fireplace?" And I was thinking OK sure. Drill a hole and put in a hanging bracket and hang the painting.
But OF himself? That reminds me of Old English gentry.
No thanks.

Can you find some other prominent -- but not SO prominent -- place for it? He must really like the portrait.

does he want to do it as a gag, or ironically? like the Kramer painting? if so, I think it's hilarious and would probably let him do it.
if he wants to hang it there because he is narcissistic or vain, then no.

If you are both okay with it, it is fine. I think it would strike others that enter your home as a conversation piece, so you have to decide if it is something you want to discuss or defend every time someone enters your house.

Can you explain how he came to acquire a painting of himself? I truly never thought of commissioning a painting of myself or anyone else.
