My niece told me today she changed her mind about spending $700 on having her hair stripped of color and have silver and white put in. She wants to go natural and her hair is silver and white naturally. Ok, but $700 to have this done? No way, no how. I should have asked her what salon she went to but I forgot. I was blown away by that price but maybe I'm out of the loop? Hahaha wouldn't be the first time.

I don't know anyone who had their hair stripped of color, but spending $700 on anything hair related seems ridiculous to me.

I think sometimes it is more about wanting to say how much they are spending because they think it makes them look good. I would think anyone who would spend $700 on hair color is a little dumb. Unless of course they are a VERY rich individual. All prices are relative to your net worth.

A fool and his money, and all that. You can get that done much cheaper than that. Still, it is a lengthy process, and it's not cheap if you go to a good salon.

I go to a fairly upscale salon and there is no way they charge anything close to that! My friend is also a stylist, I had to text her and ask how much she charges. She said a strip with a deep conditioning treatment is around $75-100 depending on the amount of hair, for the first process.

is she seeing Guy Tang himself? then yes, that's what she'd pay. otherwise hell no. tho it would likely be several hundred, depending on the amounts and colors of dye and then to re-deposit color to blend in her natural shades. to get back to a clean silver, there would be so much toning and time involved that it would cost a lot. you don't just "get" silver and white put in.

My son's hair is currently an emerald greenish/bluish color. That is an insane price. I know he paid less than $700. I don't know the exact amount because I wasn't going to pay for it!

I would never pay that much.
I do pay around $100-$125 for all over colour and highlights and lowlights and cut plus tip. My high school friend in SC that does my hair when I'm in town charges a little less, but I give her a good tip because she works me in on short notice.
I try my best to stretch out the time between appointments.
I seriously need full colour and highlights, but I've just not felt like doing it then let it go this summer because I didn't want to spend that extra money.
I've also let my hair grow really long and can't wait to get it cut.
I want to go to a really good salon and get a really experienced stylist to cut my hair since I want to cut it very short. I want a very flattering cut and have gotten too many hack jobs.
Stripping colour is just part of getting your hair coloured it's part of two process colour. The bleach/peroxide mixture lightens or "strips" the colour then a coloured gloss is added.
I don't understand why someone with natural grey hair would need stripping. I'm not a colourist, but I don't get why this person wouldn't just get all over highlights--adding colour to the white and lightening the black hair with bleach/peroxide and a chosen colour. The difference in the tones would make the hair have more depth with multi shades of colour.
I like the multi tones of colour instead of one shade all over. When you look at lots of famous redheads, you see lots of colour variations. Julianne Moore is my favourite and the closest to my natural auburn shade.

I was quoted 5 hours to do mine, around $200 WITH TIP. That made me gasp. But $700.. not happening

Niece told me it would take 8 hrs. Anyway, she has dark brown hair that is turning white. She also has a lot of thick natural curl. She has been having dark brown color with highlights.
She had it cut just above her shoulders and bleached blonde. I have to say, not a good look on her. She is 46 and looks older. She drinks a lot of wine and has gained a lot of weight. She just looks old. I think she should keep her hair darker than blonde.
Each to their own. I personally will not willingly go gray.

so she had it bleached blonde instead of stripping the color? or is she trying to say that she's going to have the blonde stripped? cuz that won't work, you can't remove bleached color, as it was a removal not a deposition of pigment.
I agree, bleached blonde on women of a certain age often makes them look like local bar.. maids, let's say.

There are a lot of factors that would make it expensive.
Removing the brown dye could take several rounds of stripping. Conditioning and adding grey and silver, and trying to leave the hair not an overprocessed mess.
Sounds like she has thick hair also.
Still, 700 seems like an awful lot.

Yes, bleached blonde from brown. She's never been blonde, even in her teen years. Red once but she changed it fast.
She said she hoped the roots would be much closer to the blonde hair when they started showing.

I had my hair color stripped when I changed from red to brown. It added $75-100 to my normal cut & color. All in I was still under $300 and I go to a pricey salon.

Peas, that amount converted to my currency would be truly horrendous! That being said, OP, I have dark brown hair which is going grey. I have all-over highlights to blend it in, 3 colours, the lightest is a caramel blonde. I am starting to hate the process and I fear damage on the bleached streaks so I spend a lot on extra treatments which add to the time commitment, in the salon and at home.
If I could go to my end point (darker grey with more silvery grey front and sides) which my hairdresser of long standing is predicting for me, by stripping and matching, WITHOUT Damage, I would pay.

She said she hoped the roots would be much closer to the blonde hair when they started showing. This is exactly why I went blond. But then I was a blond until I turned 18 or so and my hair darkened. It looks so natural on me that my friend who is a stylist didn't know I dyed it until she cut it. It doesn't work for everyone though. I've seen some pretty awful dye jobs on women my age. She might want to try going with a dark blond or light brown. Those hide gray better than medium brown but will still look more natural than the light blond. And $700 is more than my house payment. There's no way I'd spend that much on hair.

There are salons in the city here that you'd spend $250+ to get colour and highlights and a cut. So I would imagine getting it stripped and coloured grey would be pricey. I pay $80-100 depending how long my hair is on if I get a colour and/or highlights.
$700 for a hair colour is insane, and how much to keep up with it? What would the annual cost be?

We paid a bit over $300 to have dd's hair stripped and recolored. We live in a higher than average cost of living area. This is a salon that specializes in color. One of the owners, a man who has appeared on numerous TV make over shows as a color/hair expert, did her hair, along with an assistant or two (so everything was done at once..... no doing one side of her then very long hair and having the dye sit on it longer).
So, yes, I do think $700 is out of line. I had trouble swallowing $300+.

She might want to try going with a dark blond or light brown. Those hide gray better than medium brown but will still look more natural than the light blond. That's my approach. With the highlights and lowlights blended in, I think it looks natural. At least I hope it does. More than the $700, I'd be concerned with what eight hours of multiple processes would do to the health of her hair. That just seems like an awful lot for one visit. The cost breaks down to $87.50 per hour which is probably in line with what a lot of us pay for hair services (my average visit for cut & color takes about an hour and forty-five minutes).

It was about $250 to have DD's hair stripped and recolored. It had to be processed twice to be stripped and it still wasn't as light as she wanted. That included a deep conditioner and the cost of the color itself. Mid-priced salon. We told her never again.

When my dd was in high school, she and her bff dyed their hair black without my permission, btw. And she is a natural blonde. It was a nightmare. Her hair grows very quickly so she had blonde roots make an appearance every couple of weeks. After a year, we decided to strip it. It took five visits at a cost of $150 to get it done. So even though we didn't pay $700 up front, we did end up paying that in total. I was furious, needless to say, but I'm glad we did because the maintenance of the black hair was more expensive. And because we did it over five visits, her hair didn't break off.
