Oh, that is scary. Just enjoying your pancakes and BAM, there goes your car. We have had a couple here, but I certainly never want to experience it first hand.

Wow! Did you see the car (at the end of the clip) that was sitting just on the edge of the hole?
Yes, it is incredibly scary. My DH mentioned that the reason for all the sink holes has something to do with fracking. It's very frightening how many (how deep and wide) they are, too. I pray I never see one.

From what I read (the above link and other stories), the IHOP had just happened and the hole is over an old culvert. From that limited information sounds like a poor paving job. And poor inspection on the part of building officials.
Still I feel for those people that lost their vehicles.

This isn't what I'd call a true sinkhole. It's over the spot where a large culvert was. Sounds like someone cut some corners during construction. that was my first thought when I saw this.

Yeah they said on the news this morning that it was definitely not a sinkhole. The IHOP just opened last week. Either way, I wouldn't want to fall into it, whatever they are calling it!

I had the same conversation with my husband this morning saying that reports of holes opening up seemed to be on the increase. I don't think this is a true sinkhole but none the less I'd like to think my car would be still available to me when I return to where I parked it. Here is a BBC report called Who, What, Why: How are sinkholes formed? www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21600410

DD was like, "Meridian? Like an hour down the street Meridian? Sink holes are something that happens somewhere else. Like earthquakes. We are supposed to just worry about tornadoes and hurricanes." At which point we had to stop and talk about the recent earthquakes very close by and the fault line running through Jackson and about worry about things outside of our control.

My oldest DD has a fear of sink holes. I have no idea where this came from, but she was rather freaked out by this one because it is close to us. I'm not sure she will be relieved to know that it was bad construction or not.

the story says it appears to be over where there was a city culvert... sounds like the construction and inspection process wasn't quite adequate when they built the place... that would suck, to be a diner inside the restaurant and see your car just disappear!!

Somewhere there's a paving subcontractor and a civil engineer who are having the biggest Oh Sh!t moment of their lives.

The second I saw the the first bit of video this morning the very first thing I noticed was how new it all was. That made me really suspicious that this was more human error than Mother Nature. I'm so glad to hear that no one was hurt.

The local news stations have now backed off saying it is a sink hole. DH is from that area and was like "Meridian"? You are so right about talking about the earthquakes. Do they still like to mention how Reelfoot Lake was formed when they discuss the fault line? I'm from the Delta and it was always mentioned when there were tremors or the subject of earthquakes came up! I'm not familiar with the Realfoot Lake story, but when I was in college, we were told that the fault line ran right through the football field. I don't know enough about earthquakes to know if fault lines are that specific, but I kind of doubt it.
