I love the look of the layered, artsy layouts. I've done a few, but I always struggle with it. While pinning layouts from the Two Peas board, I realized that I was pinning, over and over, layouts with clean, simple lines. (layouts by Jen Gallacher come to mind - love her!) Today I was scrapping, trying to do a layered layout, and getting frustrated. I finally said, "forget it", pulled out a pagemaps sketch, and quickly got a layout done. And I love how it turned out! So why, I ask myself, am I trying to force myself into a style that I don't really "get" how to do. I can admire them, and ooh and ahh, but that doesn't mean I have to take it on for myself. I don't doubt that I will still do the occasional artsy layout, when I feel inspired, but I'm not going to let it hold me back anymore. I'm going to embrace what my style is and love it in all its glory.

I totally know what you mean! Sometimes I "force" myself to do things on a layout because it's the trendy, "right" thing to do, and I never like those in the end. It's the simple, basic layouts that I like the best. At most they might have a small element or single embellishment of something that's new to me, but that's it.
Unfortunately, I've been in such a dry spell that EVERYTHING feels new to me. But I know I'll work through it just as long as I stick with it.

Sometimes, I find when I "try to hard" it doesn't work out. Then the ones that I do in what seems like seconds, turn out to be one I love. Not always, but often. Over-thinking hurts!

I love to challenge myself and try new styles. I also know that sometimes I just feel like sticking with my comfort zone. Isn't it great that you are in charge and can do whatever it is that YOU want to do? No rules!!

Good for you! I struggle in the same way. I like a clean, smart look, yet I always think I should do more to embellish and layer.

I totally agree with what you're saying. I do like "some" of the layering but I find some of it too much and too busy! I also like SIMPLE. I used to get stuck for hours doing one layout, but since watching every Glitter Girl video ever, I just go for it! And I scrapbook so much faster now when I'm just doing and not thinking.

I had the same sort of thing happen. It's like the sky opened up and all the sudden it made sense. So liberating to just do it and not over think.

I'm in the same boat... I use to think the GG did it to push product .... They would use a whole bunch of embellies at once!

Good for you. Yes it's nice to try some different techniques or step outside our comfort zones once in a while but we do have to be true to our own style. Doesn't stop us admiring other people's work or maybe taking some of their ideas and adapting them to make them work for us.

I had a similar one when I realised that while I really admire realism, it doesn't speak to me. It's great, and I like that others do it, it's impressive that they do it, but it's not for me. I like cartooning, caricature, and a *fun* take on that realism. Sure, it's amazing to be able to capture light and shadow and line just as a camera would, but that's just not who I am.

There are never mistakes in scrapping - it is your style coming out to shine!

I'm going to embrace what my style is and love it in all its glory. I LOVE IT!! YES!! I actually like the layered look - but struggle making it "fit" like the designers...mostly I don't like the splotches of ink, I love using templates and spray ink, I don't mind a swipe or ten of acrylic paint but the blobs and dots of ink make me think they made a mistake instead of intentional-- that's just me so ...I just don't. I love page sketches and when I get stuck I always turn to them.. and looking at what I've kept- Clean and simple with white space still appeals to my creative side- so there ya go! Two peas... LOL

Absolutely, it should be fun. If it feels like work you're doing something wrong.

I totally get that! About 2 years ago I was in that exact same boat. I noticed the same thing on my Pinterest boards but yet I was trying to create a totally different style that what I was drawn to. Once I said screw this, and did what I actually liked. I started scrapping more and didn't become frustrated.

Good for you to figure out what works best for you! I have a friend who is still struggling trying to find what suits her. She keeps trying to copy everyone and everything trendy, and then isn't particularly satisfied with the results.
I like to stretch myself occasionally, but I stick to what works for me most of the time.

I love ink splatters and embellishments but that doesn't mean you have to. Right now I'm trying to get hundreds of photos onto layouts so some pages are simpler than others. The only think I don't like? Sticker sneezes! They remind me of going to crops and being told what I could and couldn't put on my pages. (shudder!!!)

I'm guilty of the same thing, artsy just isn't me. I love seeing the cool mixed media stuff but at the end of the day I'm a simple scrapper. I have added a couple ink splatters or a stamped and watercolored polaroid frame but anything more and it just looks blah to me. Admire it, I do plenty of that but I'll leave it be for going in my own album.

I like to try new things all of the time. Sometimes it just doesn't work for me. Sometimes I'm so happy with the result. As long as all of my pages don't look the same I can live with it. I do think I have a style that even when I try new techniques my style shows through.

Good for you!!! I agree simple works better for me on my pages too. I play with techniques and artsy looks on my cards.....that gives a place to play without impacting my layouts!!!

I get frustrated when I scrapbook because I haven't really found my style yet, but I find following a sketch helps me take the guess work out of "where do I start!?" and I kind of build on it from there.

So great that you decide to embrace doing your own thing. It took me a while to figure out why I'm trying to do what's trendy or popular instead of what's instinctive. Not just in terms of style but also in terms of colour palette - I love neutrals and my inspiration photos are mainly without bright colours.

I've tried and tried to do the layered thing. I think it's beautiful when Shimelle does it. I just can't do it worth poops. It looks awful every time. I do much better with plain jane stuff. Whenever I try anything arty, it looks like the dog knocked over a paint bottle and rolled around in it on my paper. I don't even try anymore!

I totally get what you are saying! I also recently realized I no longer do much of the really distressed look on my projects. I used to distress so much it almost looked like someone ran over them with muddy tires!

I love that there are so many styles and techniques we can use but it's up to us individually to pick and choose what we feel like doing. Congrats on your epiphany! Hope it gives you new vigor in your scrapping.

This works for me, too. Otherwise, I get so bogged down with the layout looking perfect that I don't finish it at all. Love playing with all the stuff, though!
