Two Years ago for Christmas I bought my daughter a lego friends set, then changed my mind and got her a different set intending to return the first one. I never did, kept intending to use it as a birthday present or the next year at Christmas and I kind of forgot about it. Now she really isn't into Legos that much and I found the set recently and I'm not sure what to do with it. I have no idea where I bought it (probably Target or Walmart) and don't have a receipt. Is it even worth trying to return somewhere? (It's not a super expensive set, probably $35-$40.) Somehow it feels dishonest to try to return it now (even though it's still a currently sold set). Maybe I should donate it to a toy drive? Thoughts?

I'd donate it to a Christmas toy drive for sure. Exactly what I was thinking. Legos are a popular items asked for with toy drives.

If I knew for sure where I got it, and it was in fine condition, I'd have no qualms about returning it for an exchange (you probably wouldn't get $$ back). But since you don't know where you got it, I'd donate it too.

If the set is still being sold at the Lego store (you can check their website), you can return it to Lego for store credit without a receipt. You might also look on eBay to see what the set is selling for there especially since it is brand new.

But since you don't know where you got it, I'd donate it too. This, except I'd take it back to any store that will take it and carries the item. They'll give you store credit of the lowest recent sale amount then turn around and sell it to someone else, probably for full price. If it wasn't resellable that'd be different but as long as it's new and the box is in good condition then I'd be fine with it.

Assuming it's still in the box, unused, etc, why not return it? The worst they can do is say no or offer you some small amount. If they do then you can regift or donate it.

I have gotten many toys when they were on sale when my kids were little (babies/toddlers). I hid them, and when I finally got around to looking for them, my kids had enough toys and didn't need more. It was around Christmas, so I took them all to Toys for Tots. They were never opened, great toys and we were so happy to donate so many great toys.

I'd either give it as a gift to someone else or donate it personally.

I would donate it. It isn't like it's money out of pocket at this point since I have had it sitting around for 2 yrs.

If it is a retired set, it may have more value than what you originally paid. Check the lego shop online and see if it is still in production. Then check bricklink.com or eBay for prices then sell.
Or you could just donate the set to one of the holiday toy drives.
