but not sure since I'm really not sure what I'm getting myself into. I am a photoshop newbie and not sure if I should take the plunge or not. And you get to use the software for $10 a month? I feel like I'm missing something.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I feel like I'm missing something. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! "what you are missing" is the idea you will never stop paying the subscription like you do when you buy a program. This year it will be $10 but next year you may find you aren't eligible for a $10 subscription or the lowest being offered is $20. I bought my copy of PS in 2011 for $199 (student special and I could prove I was a photography student). So, I've used it for the annual sum of $49.75. The longer I own it the cheaper the annual price gets. A $10 subscription is going to be the equivalent of $120 annually. It will never go down and may well go up in the following years. If you read the fine print on the contract you'll discover that if you end the subscription before the year is up, then later decide you want to subscribe again you'll have to pay the months you cancelled on before you can start a new subscription. But as it stands, if you want to use lightroom or PS then a subscription is your only choice these days.

There are many free editing programs out there. You don't *have* to use photoshop. I use an older version of lightroom. I never use Photoshop. And honestly, I don't edit my pictures much, I get them as right as I can "in camera" so editing is simply a white balance, maybe straighten and some cropping. You don't need photoshop unless you are planning on doing a lot of editing.

I couldn't live without Photoshop, but will have to be content to use my old PS CS5 forever, since I'm not planning on moving up to the Cloud. Like voltagain, I think the whole subscription idea is a bad one... too many unforeseen difficulties for me. But I use Photoshop (as well as Illustrator) professionally, not just for photo editing. I'm a designer and illustrator, and I couldn't do most of the things I do with free programs or programs that aren't compatible with Adobe products. So, I think the bottom line is to decide how and what you're going to use it for. I do a lot of my light photo editing in iPhoto, and my iPhone photos I edit in my phone.
