I have been trying to come up with a good idea for a Christmas gift for my DS's kindergarten teacher. I don't want to get her something she won't use or want and I had an idea. I was thinking of asking her to make a wish list on Amazon for parents who would like to buy something useful for her for Christmas. My mom was a teacher and my sister is pre-school teacher and I know how much money teachers put into their classrooms. I know teachers get a lot of Christmas ornaments and knic-knac (sp?) kind of things that they love but are not sure what to do with. Is this a good solution? I don't want to offend her by asking her to do this, I don't want it to look like I don't want to buy her specifically something but I just want to make sure she gets something she wants, ykwim?

Maybe suggest to the PTA to do teacher like sheets at the beginning of the year.
The teachers here do them and it's great!
It's stuff like Favorite restaurant Favorite store Do you like Starbucks Favorite bath and body works scent or no thank you to BBW Favorite candy Favorite soda
You get one about your child's teacher at the beginning of the school year.

I preferred to get the teacher something she could use for herself (restaurant gc if I knew what they liked), sometimes I would get something that could go either way (Like a Target or Amazon gc). I think they should get something they want, not something for the classroom.

Just give her an Amazon GC then she doesn't need a wishlist and you're not embarrassed by asking

My husband is a teacher and he brings home less and less every year, but his favorite gifts are gift cards of course. He especially likes book stores and amazon. He usually gives the food gift cards to our kids to go out with their friends but probably other teachers keep them for themselves.
He likes baked goods (cookies and candy) but I know many people don't. I think it's because I don't bake so it's all the home made goodies that he will get.
Definitely thoughtful but not needed/used are mugs: travel mugs or any kind of beverage container, ornaments, lotions, calendars

I always encouraged DD to suggest gifts for her teachers. Yes, some years the teachers got knick-knacks that they probably didn't use, but DD learned to listen to the things people say and watch what they do to figure out a good gift. DD's teacher who came in every day with coffee - yep, she got a nice mug and a gift card to her daily coffee stop. The one who loved Yankee Candles got another Yankee Candle.
I always liked it when the room mom mailed out a list of "favorites," because DD could use that in her shopping. I wouldn't have liked a wish list as much - that doesn't help the kids learn to be good gift givers, and if I were a teacher, I would feel self-conscious about asking for specific gifts.

Our room moms usually coordinate cash gifts for the teacher, asst teacher and aide. It comes from everyone, regardless of how much a family contributes. Our area is very mixed socioeconomically and this eliminates some kids possibly feeling bad if they can't give a gift. Do you have room parents? Maybe they can find out what the teacher likes or coordinate a group gift.

This is what I did too. My daughter is pretty good at picking out what people like. One year she got her teacher a stamp and sealing wax. Her teacher loves to write and journal and truly loved the gift. The same year she got the TA in her classroom some beautiful yarn because she loves to knit. Now she has 9 teachers so there are no personalized gifts . We always bought her teachers a gift card to a book store as an end of the year gift. I figure pretty much every teachers likes a new book in the summer, wether professional or just for fun.

How about a personalized tote bag? Or a personalized fleece throw? (from land's end or mark and graham) Personalized stationary? The fancy travel mug someone posted not too long ago? Or, a fancy lunch bag? I actually use a picnic bag because I take my breakfast and lunch to work. I bought this one from amazon.com

I bake pumpkin bread for the teachers every year. I figure they must eat it as they all rave and ask for the recipe. Oldest DD has a gluten free teacher who is male.. I'm a little stuck on this one.

My friend who is gluten free loves Bob's Red Mill pancake mix. I know it is something homemade, but let me tell you, we have tried several gluten free pumpkin breads and there isn't one that was edible. Many had some sort of powder (gapping on the name now) and I think that might have been it, they eother tasted of chemicals or were very oddly textured. Anyway, she and her family all love the pancake mix, her husband says it is better than regular pancakes.

I always gave my kids elementary teachers Barnes and Noble gift cards as well as something else to open, usually those Lindt truffle balls, and I usually package it pretty in cello/ribbon, etc. The Barnes and Noble card can be used for something personal or for the classroom so that's why I've always given those, and they always love them.

I personally loved one year when a parent asked the kids in my class what they like best about school/me and then she typed all the answers and printed them out on strips of colorful paper ( well paper she cut into strips anyway) and put them in a cute jar with colorful ribbon. They were sweet and funny and I still read them periodically. They always make me smile! They weren't signed, but I could figure out who some were from. I know that may be difficult to coordinate, but I love my jar.
Gift cards are always appreciated, ask your child where they think the teacher likes to shop, they might be able to help "personalize" it a bit that way. Amazon are great generic ones though.
I appreciate books for the classroom library as well. Good books get read a lot and are always needed!

The best teacher gift idea I've seen online was a book made out of dollar sized pieces of scrapbook paper that have things the kids love about their teacher printed on them interleaved with new dollar bills and attached all together on one side with padding compound glue. So, "50 Things I (or We) Love About Ms. (Mr.) Xxx" goes on the cover and all the inside pages have the different things printed on them. It is meaningful and cute and the teacher gets what they really need which is cold hard cash. Some classrooms get all of the parents wanting to gift something to pool their cash and have all the kids in the class provide their input, other people just do it on their own. Here's a link to the blog I saw it on. Everything is Pink Blog
