Anyone have Blue Shield HMO health insurance? I received a letter today stating that under the affordable care act they are required to report that me and my dependents have health insurance coverage. They are asking for my sons and my social security numbers. Whats odd, is that they don't have my husband listed. I know he's on the insurance. I'm the primary carrier and they are my dependents. The requested info is supposed to be sent to a Physicians Group in Arkansas (I'm in California). Couldn't find anything on the internet about it. I plan on calling Blue Shield in the morning using the number on the back of my member card.

I know that I am not listed on things like that because of hipaa. The kids can be listed with one of us because they are minors, but because I am an adult and that means I have privacy.

I do not have their plan but insurers are required to report your coverage to the IRS and they do need their SSNs to do that. We are in the process now of collecting them for some of our dependents at work. I ran a report the other day and we are missing around 100! It may not be legitimate but employers and insurers are all gearing up for the first year of 1095 reporting mandated by the ACA.
Definitely call and ask.

Thanks - about a year ago we were required to bring documents to prove our dependents. That was for my employer.

So I called member services this morning. The letter was legit. They explained that they had my DH's social security # and that's why they didn't ask for it. They had mine too but were required to confirm it. They didn't have my sons info. I told her I didn't want to send that thru the mail and she took it over the phone.

Always good to call and confirm. I too don't like sending my SS in the mail or email. I'd rather give it over the phone.
