I went into my long neglected scraproom tonight to start packing for a weekend crop. There are piles of memorabilia everywhere. Artwork, playbills, newspaper clippings, tickets, programs, etc. - all things my kids have been involved in. I have never scrapbooked this stuff although I save it compulsively. I NEED to come up with a better system and figure out how to preserve/save these things in an organized fashion instead of just putting them in piles and letting it grow out of control. I'm not really interested in scrapbooking them traditionally but I'm open to other ideas.

Good question. I'll be watching for answers. I have TONS of stuff like this. At one point, I bought a Slam Book and figured I would just put it all in there, kind of willy-nilly with a bit of journaling. I never got around to it though, and some things won't fit anyway. At present most of it is stuffed in boxes and stored in my cedar 'hope chest' in the basement. I still save all kinds of 'stuff' so some things are in my bedroom in a drawer, the newer things. I think the biggest roadblock to me getting it put into a book of some sort is the fact that I feel it should be done in chronological order. I need to get over that because that is never going to happen. LOL Truthfully, I don't even know why I keep it. I guess maybe now that a grandchild (and future grandchildren) are in my life, it's worth doing. Will they really give a rip about where I went though? I think this might be a good winter project for me this year to keep myself occupied and in good spirits. It's hard not to smile and be happy when you are looking at mementos of good times.

I scan all items like that & save as jpeg pictures. I throw most away unless they are special.
I print some later for photo boxes for the kids or use in digital albums like Shutterfly.

I have some mementos, trinkets, special items, cards, letters, old photos, etc....that I want to keep. I have them in a decorative round hat box, rectangle hat box, and small trunk type storage, that I incorporate into my home decor.

I have them in a decorative round hat box, rectangle hat box, and small trunk type storage, that I incorporate into my home decor. Those are good ideas. I have a lot of trinket-type things displayed around my home and in my China cabinet which holds no China but is more a collection of sentimental belongings. I just recently rounded up all the things pertaining to my marriage (wedding photos, my dried bouquet, the headpiece and earrings I wore, and photos and brochures from trips we have taken etc. and packed them into vintage round travel case. That's in my bedroom. I can't get rid of them, yet I can't have them out where I can see them right now. I've always wanted to do a shadow box with my son's birth certificate, footprints and other things from his newborn days in it. I'm a nostalgic hoarder. Most of the things I have on display in my home, nobody would have any idea why I have them. But to me, they are precious. I like your idea of a small trunk as a piece of furniture that holds many special memories. It would be nice to open it once in awhile and just go through it all.

I keep a nice two drawer file cabinet just for memorabilia. I keep a folder for each "event." Occasionally I will go through it and purge, if I've scrapped something and don't feel the need to keep something I will pitch the contents of that folder.

I think the first step is to purge. Do you really need to save tickets and brochures and photos and sand and...... What ever from the same event? Do you need to keep every piece of art work your kids produce? Purge as much as possible then date and journal the reason for keeping the rest. Hopefully after that it will be much easier to box things up by type of mementos, I.e. Kids at, holidays.

Memoriablia goes into files in my file cabinet. Depending on how much of it, I may stick it ina manilla envelop, mark that with the event and date then drop it in a file folder marked with the year. Or I may just put it in the folder if the event/date is evident on an item (like a ticket to an event) or write the info on the back (like an award certificate)

I scrapbook it in pockets. Sometimes I use it as background for a page. ( No, its not acid free) After I finish scrapbook in an event or trip, if I don't use it, I throw it away. I keep it in a file with the pictures it belongs to until then. Every scrapbook has a pocket page for the kids memorablia, art, letters, cards. If it's too big, I take a picture. I used a national park brochure and a post card for these pages: I also use things like a piano recital or theater program as background for a page. Almost all my pocket pages are made like this with vellum and stitching.

This is what I do. I save a few things in some memorabilia boxes, but most I just scan and save for DD9's scrapbook. I scrap digitially and print in Blurb books. It really works great. For most things, I find it's not the actual item, I need, but the memory of it. Good luck.

Each kid has a colour of binders. Items go in page protectors in the binders in chronological order.

I sort my scrapbook supplies by theme so i put memorabilia in the bin with the supplies i will use to scrap them. I use lots of memorabilia in my scrapbooking and my boys know to bring me their concert tickets and such because i will include it.
They also take close up pics of stuff for to use on the pages. Then i can have that for the page instead of the memorabilia or other supplies. Frequently it serves as jurnalling.

Lots of times, all I need the brochures and tickets and such for is information. So once I've scrapped the event, the leftover things can go in the trash.
Over the years, I've done most of the things mentioned here for things I do want to use ... maps as background paper, pockets stitched onto pages, etc. Another thing I do sometimes, if I don't quite want to toss something but didn't want to scrap it either, is to slip it behind the finished page inside the page protector (between two pages).
I do have random boxes stuffed with paperwork and memorabilia that didn't get scrapped but I can't part with, either. I suppose I need to figure out something better to do with that stuff. =sigh=
Meanwhile, I have the same piles of memorabilia I haven't gotten to yet and sometimes I forget what I have when I'm scrapping. Need.a.better.system.

I bought a smash book for all that kind of stuff. All of it gets glued into that book. It's great! If I decide I need something for my project life album I just open it and take a picture (I do Digi project life). It's contained, out of the way and easily accessible.

I use a variation of what Becky Higgins uses to organize her children's school items. I keep a 12x12 Iris container for each year. My intent was also to organize the items within each Iris container, but that never came to fruition, but at least I have the pictures and memorabilia organized by a year. That has worked for me. I was traveling for work and I organized my photos while at my hotel room each night, I could create the piles of stuff on the other bed in the hotel room. I'll try to locate the link to the video and add it. ETA link

I keep stuff in plastic containers in the kids rooms. But it's so unorganized! I wish I had a room just to keep all my scrapbook stuff together, but my husband's study won out. I really should organize the kids memory boxes so when I ever do scrapbook, things from each year will be together.

Memorabilia from Disney goes in the bin with all the other Disney stuff. Programs from a Christmas event would go in my Christmas bin. All of the assorted stuff for December Daily goes in there too, like the tag from the Christmas tree or the receipt from the Santa picture or tags off of DD's new St. Nicholas pjs, in a folder labeled with the year (because I'm a couple years behind!). Other travel memorabilia goes in the bin for that specific trip with those supplies. School papers, smaller artwork, etc. goes in the school bin. That way when I want to scrap some photos for any of these things, all of the stuff I would need to do it is all located together.

I have plastic bins. Not too huge, and they are full. But then, my kids are grown so I'm not actively adding stuff to them anymore. The bins have things like awards they've won, report cards, graduation programs, birthday cards, etc.
In more recent years, for birthday cards, I arrange them on a table, take a picture of them all, then open them up, fold the front back, and take a picture (in the same arrangement) of the insides.
The system has worked well, except I can't find my 3rd son's high school diploma. Have all the other kids, just not his. Not sure where it is, and it is possible that he never gave it to me to save (but I have other things from the same time and later).
For myself, I have two bins.

If it's something recent that I wish to scrap, I place it in a letter size manila envelope. I add the photos to the same envelope when I print them. I write the event and date on the envelope. I cross it off and re-use the envelope once I have completed the scrapbook page. I store the envelopes upright in magazine holders.
Older stuff from my kid's childhood is in one plastic bin per child. I hope to go through those eventually and purge, scan the artwork and print for scrapbooking, and decide what to keep.

I have a plastic box labelled for each year and I toss memorabilia in it as I go.
Then when it's time to scrap that year - I go through and purge some stuff. Some stuff is used to help me journal and then out it goes also. Some stuff I scan or photograph and then discard. Some stuff goes in pocket pages in the corresponding scrapbook.
I do find that waiting a while helps separate the keep from the not-keep - when it's fresh, it's all important but 3 years later, it's easier to say I'll keep the program with my child's name but I don't need the tickets or the table scatter.

I keep mine in photoboxes unless they are too large. Some years I have one box per year and other years I can put 2 ziploc bags in a box, each marked with its own year.
Larger items go into mailers with the year written on them and I store a bunch of those in a plastic sweater box in my closet.

All flat stuff we have in loose leaf page protectors. In a binder one for each child.
