What do you do when you've met someone who is very familiar to you? Puzzle it out in your head? Ask them 20 questions to figure it out? Just sit and let it bother you?
Last weekend I was at an event and one woman I was sitting with looked SO familiar. It drove me crazy- I was digging into my brain trying to figure out the connection. At an appropriate time, I started the 20 questions- "You know, you look SO familiar. Did your son go to C Elementary School?" "No." "Did you attend Local University?" "Uh, no. I'm an actor, so I get that a lot." "Okay," I said, "That must be it." Someone we were sitting with piped in with, "What would I know you from?" Actor new friend answered that she was Ross' girlfriend, Julie, on Friends. We all laughed and said that she really was an old Friend that we all went to college with.
It would have driven me nuts if I hadn't figured it out. I really thought she was someone from a college study group.

That is pretty cool! She was actually in something you know, not just a small movie from the 70's or something. I looked her up, and she really IS an actor. Her imdb.com list of credits is really long! Looks like she does a lot of voice-over work.
I had a semi-famous actor come into the shop where I worked one day (years ago). He was in a fairly popular tv-show at the time, and I was used to seeing his face in the media. So when he came in I did the whole 'Hi, how are you?', but in the way you do with someone you are friends with but haven't seen in a while. I just recognized his face and went straight into a friend-greeting, instead of a customer greeting. It took me about three seconds before it clicked that I don't actually know this man, I've just seen him on tv. And that explained his polite, but careful 'Hello' and semi-smile back to me.
One time I met a random guy at a party. We spent a good hour trying to figure out where we knew each other from. We went through schools, sport teams, neighbourhoods, workplaces, relatives.... We both knew we knew one another from somewhere, but we never figured out where that was.

I'm super stupid in this area. I was once in line for ice cream behind a familiar looking cute guy...it was Brad Pitt. I wouldn't have figured it out had it not been for my colleagues' excitement. I have lived most of my life in New York and Los Angeles so this is a regular occurrence.

I talk to them like an old friend. Actually I talk to everybody like an old friend with just a few exceptions. Yes I am that crazy lady in the store most of you avoid.

I normally just try to figure it out in my head. However, I was at the BMV last year and the clerk helping me did the whole I know you. Turns out her kids go to my kids school but much younger not it. She was my daughters dance teacher when my daughter was around 4 or 5. My daughter is now 24 and we have moved and do not really live close to that studio any longer. I would have never placed her.

Maybe we'll meet up one day and have a delightful chat in the middle of an aisle. I am always chatting to strangers, even if it is just a random comment about a product or to offer some unsolicited advice about something in the store!

With me it's not remembering where I know them from, I'm pretty good with that. But I can't remember people's names to save my soul! I'm really terrible with names but I'll remember everything else I've noticed or that you've ever told me about yourself. So I'd be standing there trying to jog my own memory with, "Hmm. I know that lady from XYZ. Her kid plays on the soccer team and is in third grade. They have a yellow lab. Live across from the high school. WHAT THE HECK IS HER NAME?" It drives me completely insane.

Too funny!!!
I've seen several celebrities doing totally normal, everyday things here in Nashville and it always makes me think the same thing. How do I know that person?
I've seen Mike from American Pickers in Whole Foods three times and every time I've thought that. Lol!

I was at my niece's graduation party and saw someone that I was sure I knew. She thought the same about me, we figured out we used to be coworkers. She told me that she and her husband owned a small business in the town that my SIL had a cabin.
I told my SIL that I knew her. I didn't know her last name since she had gotten married and had a daughter since we worked together. SIL couldn't figure out who it was. You'd think she'd know the people at her own party!

When I see a celebrity (from TV, movies, etc. ) in real life, they always look a bit different to me. It takes me a minute to figure out who they are.

I had that happen on Wednesday this week. My BFF's great aunt was in the store with her BOYFRIEND!!! She is well into her 90s and he is, too. How cute was that? They were on a date! I didn't remember who exactly she was, but when she told me the last name I knew it was her aunt! Very sweet!

I was recently at an arts festival our city holds and saw a guy that looked so familiar. I was just about to go up and say hi when I realised that I actually do not really know him, nor have I met him in real life. He is however very good friends with my daughter and she often goes out with him, clubbing etc and he always tags her in photos with him on Facebook! That would have been an embarrassing conversation! Although she says I should have spoken to him anyway, he would have thought it was funny.

I don't play the 20 questions bit. After teaching/being a librarian in a school for 30 years, there are too many possibilities.
Back in the dark ages, when I was in college--at a party, I introduced myself and the man replied, "I'm Paul." I thought it was a little odd (no last name) and then later I was informed I had been talking with Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary the singing trio. Perhaps he was disappointed that I did not recognize him even after learning his name! They were in town to perform at the university, but I never figured our paths would cross, so I was 100% clueless.
