Because I am insane, I am scrapping 2 copies of the same album for Christmas. I haven't scrapped a full album in years, so I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and I was kind of hoping that the peas could give me some encouragement, help, ideas... to help this happen.
Here are the parameters:
* wedding photos for parents * each album has a 20 page capacity. I will not exceed this under any circumstance. * each page/layout will be done twice, one for each album * Ideally, I would like to use 5x7 photos as much as possible, though I will probably mix it up. * The first layout of the album will be a single 8x12 photo with text * Layouts have to be simple. I don't have time or the inclination to get really fussy. I've always been more of a simple scrapper with some fancy flourishes rather than full on intense, detailed scrapper.
I'm thinking of looking at sketches to get some ideas of what's possible.
Can anyone help this scrapper who is jumping back in the water? I don't want to do the expected uploaded and printed book, I want something more unique and personal.
Thanks.

Have you picked your supplies yet? When I work on a project like that I find working from one collection makes things go much faster. The designer made everything to match anyway, so why reinvent the wheel? I think I would pre-plan photo placement first. Especially if you only want to do 20 pages. Throw each photo(s) into the page protectors. Then I would decide on page design. and two page spreads could make things faster, as well. I think you have time to get it done. But then, I'm a glutton for punishment also.

I bought the background cardstock yesterday, so I have 40 pages of lovely dark purple for my backdrops. The rest... not quite there yet. But I agree, finding one collection would make things go so well... the problem is, I can't find any one collection that works for me.
I do see a lot of floral and ribbon embellishments... simple things that will take up space but also add a little flair. I've also been looking at the wedding Jolee's and other 3D embellishments which I think might be helpful for titles or just additional little flair?
Am I insane?

No, not insane. Sounds like a fun project to me! If you can get your hands on Scrapbook Generations travel sketches book (I believe you can get it as a downloadable book from their website), you might be able to find some layout ideas that can work for larger photos and tweak them a bit, or try Googling "scrapbook sketches for 5x7 photos" and see if anything there pops up that you like. Keep in mind that a good sketch can usually be flipped or rotated so you can often get more mileage out of the ones you pick, and the repetition will also help the finished book to be more cohesive.
Now look at the photos you really want to include, and see what matches up. The sketch can help dictate how many and the type of papers you need to look for and also can give some idea of what to do for embellishments as well. From there, you can make it as simple or as complicated as you want.

So very true. I've been looking at sketches on Google all morning and I've found some good ideas. I'm just so rusty, I haven't scrapped in years.
Thanks for the support!

You can do this! And I'm sure the scrapbooks will be very well received, too.

I don't really care, it's how I want to present the pictures. If they never look at them again, whatever, it won't surprise me. Our wedding is old news because their daughter has children, which is so much more important than their oldest child getting married. /sarcasm

I do two albums (25 double layouts) of all of our vacations. I usually have them halfway completed before we even leave. I write down the pictures I want to get for sure and make sure that I take them vertically and horizontally. I also make 8.5 x 11 index cards that hold about 100+ tiny photos. I number them and write down on a piece of paper what size and what layout they will go on. I use tons of wallets for the scenery pictures. I have all of my planned pages in baggies so I can just slip the photos in there with them. In the baggies I have all of the paper, embellishments, and title work. I also put a sketch in there for motivation. Sometimes I use it, and sometimes I don't.
I made two wedding albums for friends that were married one week apart. I wrote down all of the major events in a wedding and started there. I didn't have any pictures to go on since I gave the albums as wedding shower gifts. At the back of each album I put in several Project Life pages so favorite pictures of the bride and groom could be added. The first page was the engagement photo, then the rehearsal dinner and then the wedding activities.

If you are used to doing photo books.....and have a favorite company. Then why not use use their templates/layouts as a start off point?
Have you seen all the dollies that are really popular right now? I think they add a lovely romantic touch to a LO.
Good luck

Oh... duh. DOILIES! Of course. Hahahahaha.
Those could be a lot of fun... but are they AF? Or does that even matter anymore? But definitely something to look at.

I've been looking at getting a cutting system but have no leads at the moment. Thanks.

I wish I had a gold doillie for this layout. I don't have any advice for you, but what a great gift...and I would love to do a purple wedding album. I hope you show us your album!

I've seen a few different small roller diecutting machines for sale there recently pretty reasonably priced. The metal dies work in most of those machines. Otherwise Amazon is your friend, especially with the holidays coming up. Lots of that stuff will be discounted before Christmas. I have a Cuttlebug and a Big Kick and both are great, the Big Kick is just a little larger and more versatile.

I do 2 albums; one for each of my sons, and many times layouts are almost the same and other times I put in the pictures that relate to them but not in the other book.
Since you have purple cardstock for all your pages, just go to your local craft store and look for things that inspire you or that you can see yourself using on your page. This may be letter stickers, flowers, jolies type stickers, etc. There may be some beautiful foil or lace papers or other paper you can use to mat, for accent or whatever you like.
I have found that my pages come together very quickly when I really like the embellishments I am using. also look on ebay to see if someone is selling something you really like, since a lot of old product won't be on store shelves.
I have 2 die cut machines but generally don't use them.

Ha ha, yes, it is a discount store like TJ Maxx or Marshalls that sells home goods and other close out stuff. They are known for having a decent selection of scrapping and crafting stuff lately. I recently saw a Spellbinders machine there, and they had a couple other different ones a few weeks ago. I just looked quickly on Amazon and the Vintag themed version of the Big Kick is currently selling for about $60 (with Prime) which is a pretty good price. I think I paid about that when I bought mine at Michael's with a rare 50% coupon on Sizzix stuff. I don't know what all comes with it though on Amazon. The Cuttlebug is a slightly smaller machine, that one is going for a little over $46 on Amazon right now but you might need different shims/platforms to cut the various brands of dies.

I know Michaels has the doily die usually available if you have that store. It is a thin die, so it would work in a number of machines if you go that route. Do you have Craig's List? Lots of people are getting rid of machines on there.

I think the albums will be beautiful.
I totally agree with finding embellishments that you love, and using them throughout the album. I think a big part of what makes albums like that look good is cohesiveness.
Doilies, "pearl" or rhinestone halves (the already adhesived type), Stickles, enamel dots, all of those things could be used throughout the album to build cohesiveness.

the doilies would usually be put in behind other papers, so they would be fine if they are not actually touching your photos. i have used them for years and see no issues in my albums.

I get doilies from the Dollar Store. Look in their wedding/baby shower section.

One thing I have done in the past is, pick a sketch that is simple and can be flipped. You could end up doing 4 pages with the same design, but different looks. Then, just change up the embellishments.
If I can find my pics, I will post a couple as examples.
The more simple the design, but you can always embellish more and change it up some. Have fun!

doilies from the Dollar Store Me too! Also almost anywhere that they sell cake/baking decorations. Grocery stores, big box stores. Doilies are cheap.

I think the nice thing about wedding photos/albums is you really want the focus on the photo and since its an elegant affair, the whole less is more approach should work for you.
I would just get a few coordinating embellishments (flowers, lace, hearts) like the jolees or something similar. This way the pages will sort of flow and be decorative but not overly busy. I also really still like the look of photo corners when you are using more formal photos. It can actually make the process go quicker bcz you don't have to adhere the actual photo.
I think keeping it to one photo a page or at most 2 is the best way to keep it simple and not drive yourself crazy.
It is a big undertaking, but I mean its your wedding photos so it should be fun to make!
