Updated photo of under his bed : I feel better now *****OP**** He HAD a mattress under there so the boys could pull it out for a friend. I noticed one day that he was putting stuff under his bed on the mattress and made him clean it. The bed is against two walls and on the third side is his dresser. I pulled the mattress out today and this is what it looked like once I pulled everything out from under. He had shoved everything behind the mattress and then pushed the mattress against the wall so you couldn't tell if you just looked under.

I think you need to make him binge watch Hoarders and Hoarding: Buried Alive.

Sorry but I lol'd. That is something my 13 yo DD would totally do. My DH would flip his lid if he found that though! Good luck!

It isn't even stuff. Younger DS had stuff under his bed, stuffed animals, shoes, clothes he didn't want to put away. Older DS, it is mainly trash. Trash he could have just put in the trash (gasp) instead of sliding between the mattress and the frame to shove it back there. I think it took more energy to hide it than it would have to throw it away.

Haha. That brought back memories of cleaning with all three of my girls. I'd say we say a lot of that in my house from ages 5-10.

My dd used to do this with freaking granola bar wrappers! She didn't do it in her room though, she would shove them in the couch cushions and behind a short cabinet next to my computer desk. She did it so she wouldn't get caught snacking before dinner. This went on for like 6 months! It Didn't matter how much trouble she got in, or if I bought different ones she supposedly didn't like. She was addicted to the dang things. I finally quit buying them. She is almost 20 now and doesn't live at home. If she is shopping with me and I throw a box in the cart, she almost pukes just looking at them. Lol the weird things kids do! I'm sorry you have to deal with it and hope he decides it's a bad idea to keep gathering trash under the bed. :/

Release a mouse in his room and tell him it must live in there because of all the rubbish!

I found a mess like that under my son's bed when he was living back home in between jobs. He had to have been early to mid 20s. Except he also had empty or near empty food dishes, drinking glasses, paper wrappings from whatever food he brought up there. It was horrifying. I wish I had taken a picture of it. As soon as he gets into his own place, he is neat as a pin. God forbid you want to bring even a water into his car. But my house, who cares.

I can't tell you how glad I am to know that this doesn't only happen in our house! DS is great about helping with household chores, does laundry, cleans, etc. Unbeknownst to me, he was shoving all his garbage behind and under his bed (a captain's bed with dresser drawers under it, so it was hard to see behind it and hard to move the bed).
The granola bar wrappers tucked in every crevice around the house - yeah, I caught my kids doing that too. They didn't think I'd notice the bars were eaten. Um, the package of 60 is nearly empty and I just bought it 3 days ago!

My ds did that for a little while. Fortunately it didn't get too bad before we found it. He got to pick out a new garbage can as soon as he was done cleaning! He had a little one and was too lazy to empty it. Got a much bigger one and for some reason has no problem emptying it.
Boys are weird. Hasn't been a problem since.

I have seen my dds go to more effort to hide trash like a wrapper instead of just putting it the trash. Just don't get it. I remember my brothers doing some of the same type of thing.

Because I remembered well what it looked like under my bed and the beds of my siblings growing up, when it came time to get our kids new beds a few years ago we got them platform beds with solid bases. We lost some storage capacity, and their rooms still get messy, but I don't have to worry about what's lurking under the beds. The backs of their closets are a different story...

It is the same gene that prevents them from changing the toilet paper roll. Mine will use a new roll and place it on the floor beneath the holder with the empty roll.
