Well I'm completely confused because goof and woof and roof all rhyme.

If I say it, it's roof as in woof If I sing it, it's roof as in goof Can you just imagine the song go "up on the roof" the first way? How do you even spell that in the pronounced way? R-oouh-f?

Goof and roof are the same here but woof has a shorter oo than the other two.

Goof, woof and roof all sound the same in standard Scots. Same in my part of the Canadian woods.

I grew up in Iowa and say "ruff", and root rhymes with "put", and creek is "crick". I haven't lived in Iowa for over 20 years and I still say it that way. Old habits die hard! BUT, I do NOT say "warsh" for wash. same here. occasionally I say those words "correctly", but it's pretty much the shorter vowel sounds.

It's a regional thing- When I was 9 we moved from Minnesota to Pennsylvania. I remember my mom telling me about some of the ways Easterners pronounce different words. We said "roof" (like "goof"). On the east coast it's pronounced like "woof". Other differences were the word "route" (like "out" compared to "root".) Or pronouncing the word "crayon" like "cran", and in PA it sounded like "crown". I still pronounce the word "lawyer" as "loy-er" instead of "law-yer." I need to work on that one though- my future son-in-law is planning to go to law school next year!

I have always pronounced it to rhyme with "goof", but I keep hearing people pronounce it to rhyme with "woof" and got all nervous that I've been saying it wrong like an idiot. Well, I was already to agree with you about the "goof" thing, but then you messed with mind because in my world "goof" and "woof" rhyme.

It's different where I lived in IA but my MIL is from central IA and uses those pronunciations, including WARSH, MAY-sure (measure), GAR-beej (garbage), etc etc. To my kids' endless amusement, lol

Rhymes with goof.
I've heard it pronounced like woof but that sounds so weird to my ears.

Goof, woof and roof all sound the same in standard Scots. Am I the only one that had to practice my bad Scottish accent and verify this?!

I think I switch how I say it depending on how I'm using the word in a sentence. I probably use roof like goof more.
