I have always pronounced it to rhyme with "goof", but I keep hearing people pronounce it to rhyme with "woof" and got all nervous that I've been saying it wrong like an idiot.

Upper midwest tends to say "ruff" instead of "roof." It still sounds weird to me.

Roof rhymes with goof for most folks. It's a regional thing. You're fine!

I grew up in Iowa and say "ruff", and root rhymes with "put", and creek is "crick". I haven't lived in Iowa for over 20 years and I still say it that way. Old habits die hard! BUT, I do NOT say "warsh" for wash.

Either. Standard dialect around here pronounces it ruff (not quite, little more oo than that) but I will do the long oo when I think about it. I'm just weird that way. Up there where you are probably just has the same dialectal quirk we have around here.

I wrote roof like goof but then I said it out loud. I actually say a cross between roof like goof and roof like woof.

I say roof, same as you.
Slight hijack, but my DH uses /pool/ for both "pool" and "pull". He thinks he's saying them differently- but he's not. Drives me batty.

Pretty much this in my neck of the woods too. I don't say "warsh" but my mom does. There are a couple of other words that aren't coming to mind right now that I find myself doing the same thing - pronouncing the word the way "locals" do vs. the way I know it should be lol. And I was born and raised here in northern IN, so I'm definitely a local.

I intentionally pronounce it to rhyme with woof, but I think that I was taught rhyming with goof.

I saw it like woof - Grew up in Oregon and now live in Utah. My children all say it like it rhymes with goof.

I grew up in Michigan and I pronounce it like goof. My dh grew up on the east coast and he says it like ruff. He also pronounces room like rum...instead of room like zoom. He also uses "either do I" instead of "neither do I". I razz him about the roof/room thing but the last one secretly drives me bonkers and I correct him EVERY time he says it. He laughs and plays it off like he KNOWS it's supposed to be neither but he says either in just regular conversation with other people so I know that his norm is to use either.

Goof, woof and roof all sound the same in standard Scots.
