Well, I never thought I would be one to fall into the planner craze but when I saw the super cute Heidi Swapp ones at Ms for 40% off AND I was armed with an additional 25% off coupon, I couldn't resist. So now I've spent hours on Pinterest checking out how some people use and decorate them and of course I want mine to be all cute and pretty too! I don't have small children any more and I don't have a bunch of social or business events to keep close track of, but what I do want to use it for is to document more of every day things and I'm hoping it will inspire me to take pictures every week of random things and write random thoughts... Kind of my little project life (because that is something I never did do) but on a bit of a different scale. I want to document months rather than weeks and thought that the planner might help me keep track of things other than just birthdays, anniversaries or special events! So what are some must have items that will help me make my planner pretty and functional?

I am pretty much in the same boat as you with not having a bunch of stuff to record. I got one because I just got a part time job that will have deadlines and reports that have to be made on time. I was at a crop with some other women who really love their planners. I ended up getting a Simple Stories Carpe Diem planner. The leather spoke to me. It is a binder and I loved that I can shift the months around and keep the current month on top so it is easy to find quickly. I got a package of pockets (for business receipts), a package of three dividers to find the most important spots quickly, and this planner offered a little notepad that has tear off sheets that you can keep on the top of everything so if you have a list of things that doesn't fit onto a specific week or day, you can manage those things on the top of your planner. The additional three things were about $10. I think the planner is gorgeous and simple on the outside and I don't need to put cute stuff on the inside. It would kill me to spend the $ just to toss it every year. The pages are really pretty and have some nice illustrations so it is still functionally cute. I have seen so many people make gorgeous planners, but I still scrap a lot and think I would rather put my energy into scrapping.

I'm curious to I plan to get one and wonder if I am going to be tempted to buy a lot of add ons latter. EXACTLY what happened to me! I bought a cute one, started browsing for ideas and suddenly I feel that I "need" other stuff to go along with it. I can see it getting pretty crammed if I go overboard with embellishments, and I've read somewhere along the line that chipboard is a no-no if you want to keep it small so it's things like washi tape and stickers that seem to be the main thing people use. As for tossing it every year... no way! I think I would keep it - or at the very lease use pieces of it at the end of the year for a scrapbook page to document the year. Anyway, I really want to give it a try and am hoping that it inspires me to document simple daily things in a sentence or two as well as take more every day photos ... and maybe then I'll actually start using my Selphy for small wallet size prints that I can add to it. I also have a Minc - which I adore - and am going to make my own foiled labels to use with it. But I also thought that maybe there is an "essential" stamp set that people are using with theirs that I should look into. Anyway, we shall see. Ask me in February how it's going... my intentions are good but it may be too much to keep up with!

I'm curious to I plan to get one and wonder if I am going to be tempted to buy a lot of add ons latter. I think as scrappers we have a LOT of product that can be used in planners. At least I know I do! I ended up with the Erin Condren planner instead of Carpe Diem (after a lot of back and forth) but I still bought a few things from the Carpe Diem line to use inside. I love Simple Stories' products so I bought the die cuts (which are thin), those clear stickers and I think the phrase/word stickers. I'm gonna do my best to use that stuff, with my scrappy stash, and not put any more money into it. I'm really excited to get going on it, but I'm either getting it for my birthday or Christmas (I had my dd take a look at what I wanted and hopefully with my dh they came up with a good fit from EC).

I use my planner as a diary/document every day things. I have a super quiet life filled with pets. No social engagement or work items.
Check out diamondcloudstudio on Instagram. Her planners are the perfect example of document your life.
These are the things that go in my planner- Washi Tape, stickers, die cuts, Project Life cards, paper ephemera that I find like greeting cards, magazine photos, etc...
Alphabet stickers are super popular but I make my own. You don't have to go out and buy all the cute supplies. You can make a lot of them. They are absolutely gorgeous. Look at Pinterest for planner supplies you can make.
I have a regular planner that is my personal diary. I also have a MetroPol Filofax that is my art journal. I don't buy a lot of extra supplies. I mainly buy stickers & washi tape. I like to make my own dividers, dashboards & all the other pretties.

In terms of my "planner essentials" - mine are absolutely the Pilot Frixion erasable pens. They write beautifully, don't smudge or bleed through even on thin paper and really do erase completely once the ink is dry. They have a lot of great colours as well.
My other must-haves include washi tape (lots and lots of washi tape!), some 3x4 Project Life cards and rub-ons. I rarely use rub-ons but they're perfect for the planner because they don't add bulk.

I have 2 sets of the Frixion pens and they are as good as you said they are. They are the best pens in the history of pens. I have a huge set. I love them! I have plenty of washi and I have planner stamps. I don't have tons but I do have quite a few. Love them!

I have a set of frixion pens on the way! I doubt I really need anything because my stash is already out of control but I'm always looking for an excuse to shop!

I've heard a concern with the frixion pens is that the ink fades in heat (part of the whole "friction" as an eraser thing). That scared me away from those pens, though I love the idea of them. Has anyone who has used them for a while experienced this problem IRL?

I use my filofax strictly for work/life stuff but I just subscribed to Cocoa Daisy's planner kit so I can get a little bit of pretty in my planer in 2016. My must haves are pretty simple. A good pen - I tend to like something by pilot, some highlighters (I like to color code), and post it notes to jot down important things.

One thing you need and if you just buy a planner somewhere and look inside and think "is that all there is?" is planner inserts. Those are the pages you decorate. I bought a Filofax a while ago and I hate the inserts. I really dislike them so much. I had to get new ones made because I just hate looking at them so much.
If you get a Kikki K planner they are pretty and colourful.
That's not to say Filofaxes aren't great planners. They have a huge cult following. They have their own Facebook fan groups, they have meet ups and discuss planning very intensively.
There are no STUPID RULES in planning. There is no acid free/lignin free bullshit. There is no guilting a person for buying this brand of planner or that brand or this embellishment or that one because it's out of style. There is no Hall of Flame (note pun) competitions with planning. She who has the most FUN wins. There is no "competitive" planning. There is no one planner "better" than another. There is no cheating, rules, or *anything* like that like we had in scrapbooking.
You need as *many* or *as few* planners as you want. They are your planners. If you want to share them with someone cool. If not that's fine, too.

Has anyone who has used them for a while experienced this problem IRL? I've been using them for only a few weeks but haven't noticed any problems with this. I left my journal on the couch in the sun on a 36 degree (Celsius) day last week and nothing faded or was damaged. Not sure about long term use though.
