My DD wants a full size bed. We have a small house. So I'm thinking of getting an Ikea platform bed with drawers underneath so give extra cloths storage for her. this ikea bed frame I'm then looking at a full size Serta mattress from Sams. Serta MattressDoes it make a difference having a box spring under the mattress? Anyone have these? How is Ikea furniture quality? Any comments/ideas welcome.

I've been sleeping on a platform bed for 19 years and find it more comfortable than a box spring version. Ours is an teak bed from Scan that we've had for years.
I have a lot of Ikea furniture in the house that has held up well, bookcases, desks and stuff like that but not beds. My sister has had a bed from Ikea that didn't last-it broke several times. I'm not sure if that's normal or maybe (knowing her) the way she put it together.

Platform sleeper of 12+ years. We do have a wonderful mattress so maybe that plays a small part in it, but we do not miss having a box spring.

We switched from box spring to platform a couple of years ago. We like it but then we like a firmer mattress. I don't know if that makes a difference. We went from a Sterns and Foster pillowtop that was awful to a cheap Ikea mattress too. We still like the Ikea but hated the S&F within 6 months after we got it.

We had a platform made for us and loved it! Didn't notice a difference without the box spring. Loved that the bed was lower.

Dh made our platform bed from a pattern. We love it! We have a really good mattress though.

We had a platform bed frame custom made, high enough to store totes underneath since we live in a small space. Having drawers underneath would not have worked, because we would not have been able to open them. I do kind of have to jump to get into bed though, I can see a step in my future.
Don't miss a box spring at all.

I don't really get what the difference between the two is. A box spring always seemed like a fabric covered wooden frame to me. Ds has a platform bed that he made in wood shop in middle school. No real difference between it and our bed with a box spring in terms of comfort.

We have a platform bed. I truly feel no difference between that and our former box spring.

You couldn't pay me to go back to a box spring. You could easily persuade me to get rid of the Sleep Number mattress, though.

No real difference between it and our bed with a box spring in terms of comfort. I didn't either, I didn't know if it made the mattress more "hard" if it was on a solid surface as opposed to the springs but our box "spring" isn't really very "springy" for that matter. Thanks for all the info everyone. Maybe this IS the way to go.

We had a platform and got rid of it; just wasn't comfortable. However, that may have been due to the mattress. We downsized from a king to a queen (due to space issues) so we went with a box spring.
Both our box spring and mattress, as well as our bed frame are from Ikea. I truly LOVE my Ikea mattress! And the bed frame (which was like $98) has really held up well over the past 6-7 years. It is a simple black wrought iron-style that never really goes out of fashion.

We have two out of three beds in our house from IKEA, and I love my bed. Never missed a box spring. I know a lot of people complain about the quality of IKEA furniture, but we are not hard on furniture at all, even our kids, and ours holds up really well. My son has had the same bed for almost 6 years and it's in great shape. We have desks, beds, night stands and bookcases and a small amount of kitchen cabinets in our house (we built a bar). And I really like it. The only piece I don't like is our coffee table, but it was less than $40 so I didn't expect much out of it.

Two weeks ago my husband put together my daughter's Malm bed which is from Ikea. It is very similar to the Brimmes. She has an Ikea box spring and mattress with the Malm. It has storage underneath like the Brimmes. We only bought two drawers because the one side of the bed is really close to the wall and she would not be able to open the drawers. The Malm is on casters and moves easily on the floor (which is wood).
