There was a thread about the DNA testing kits recently, and I thought I'd share this special. I'm gonna order kits for DH and myself as well as my 95 year-old grandmother.

I used the main website address...no special code or link. It seems to take it a few seconds to switch to the sale price.

Anyone have experience with these DNA tests? Are they accurate?

Anyone have experience with these DNA tests? Are they accurate? I did mine a few months ago and it was very accurate. I knew some relatives who had done the test already and it matched them up to me with perfect accuracy. My 1st cousin did the test and the match came back and said that it was an extremely high likelihood that he was my first cousin. It also matched me to many 2nd and 3rd cousins correctly. The neatest thing though is the DNA circles that they connect you to. They put me in a circle of folks who share DNA and their algorithms predicted who our ancestor in common is. I had never heard of the gal but I put it out on Facebook and one of my relatives provided a bunch of info that led me to figure out the relation. Turns out, the ancestor was the sister to my 3 times great grandma. I mean, wow!!! There are a bunch of people in the DNA circle for this common ancestor and the results allowed me to widen my family tree. I am just fascinated by the results!!

I did one this year. It confirmed my Native American lineage as well as the family history of just how much. I'm 17% which puts my great grandparent as full blooded. You would never know it to look at me!

You can also purchase this on Amazon via Ancestry.com. It's backordered until 12/3 on Amazon but you can purchase it now for the same $69 price. With prime, shipping was free (instead of $10 on ancestry's site). Link on Amazon: here

Thanks for the heads up! My Dad asked for this for Christmas because he doesn't believe my result. *eyeroll*.

You would never know it to look at me! Did it tell you from what tribe? My maternal grandma is half Native American but we have been trying to figure out the tribe for years. I also don't look Native American.

DH did the test and one of his matches contacted us this weekend. We have been completing holes in each other's trees. I ordered 3 for his DH and Dm.

Thought this might be of interest to those who are contemplating doing their DNA through Ancestry. I currently have 153 pages of DNA matches. That's 7,600+ matches to my DNA. 5 are to 2nd cousins, 5 to 3rd cousins, 333 to 4th-6th cousins, and the rest are to 5-8th cousins. I'd say the majority of these matches haven't uploaded family trees so I'm unable to know who our common ancestors are and many others have private family trees. Many who do have public family trees have incomplete trees or trees that I'm unable at this point to pinpoint our common relative. However, despite all of the former, I still have found many, many previously unknown-to-me relatives and also bloodline confirmations that I've been unable to find documentation for. At this point, I'm hoping my brothers will also do this test to further explore our ethnic heritage through DNA.

I was thinking of getting this for my brother. So this isn't just a page that says 'you are 5% this, and 30% that'...?

And another question....if *I* ordered it through the website but my brother is the one its for.....do I get the link to the info once its done? Or how would I get it so he could get the results first?

Stupid question...In order to do this (find distant relatives), one would need to have a ancestry account, right? I don't think you need a paid account to do it, but I would recommend having a family tree set up. And, I am not sure if you have to have a paid account to have the family tree!! When I signed up for my account I started creating a family tree and I have just paid for it every month since then.
You don't need a family tree but I would highly recommend it! This way the algorithms that Ancestry uses have all the info they need to find out how you are related to someone. If you don't have a family tree, it just says that you are related but you can't figure out how! It just makes for more complete results this way.
My cousin does not have a family tree or an account but did the test. He pops up as being my first cousin but I only know that because I knew he did the test and he used a version of his real name as his username. If someone uses the username of abcd1234 and has no family tree then I have no idea how I am related to that person.
Now, since I have put a lot of work into my family tree there, my relatives can do the test but activate it under my account so that their test takes advantage of all my hard work! My mom did the test and we activated it under my account and my brother and great aunt are going to do it as well and they both will be activating it under my account. This way they piggy back on my family tree.

I was thinking of getting this for my brother. So this isn't just a page that says 'you are 5% this, and 30% that'...? You get that info as well as a list of everyone you are related to that has done the test with Ancestry. They predict what your relationship with a person is based on your DNA. My first cousin did it, and it matched us correctly. My mom's 2nd cousin did the test and it guessed that he was my 4th cousin. Mostly right, but he is my 2nd cousin one time removed.
My results were: my mom-correct 1 first cousin-correct 1 2nd cousin-correct 2 3rd cousins- both of these are correct 109 4th to 6th cousins- Some are actual 4th cousins, some are probably 2nd or 3rd cousins and some I can't even figure out since there is no info on our relationship. and then hundreds of folks who they think are 6th to 8th cousins.
The breakdown of my ethnicity is neat but I mostly knew what it was beforehand. I find the relationship and DNA circles to be much more fascinating. It's allowed me to open up my family tree and explore branches/people I never knew about!

Thank you!! I had been meaning to order this for dh for Christmas since he is so hard to buy for - and now I got it for less! I also got one for myself. Family members have traced our family on both sides and I want to see how accurate the testing is. Dh's family knows very little of their ancestors. I thought it would be a different kind of gift. Thanks again!! Jill

Thank you for the info...I still just don't know. I don't know of anyone in my family who has done it. And I have enough for my brother already....thanks for the info though!

Thank you for all the information!! I'm just starting to dip my toes into the genealogy world. I thought the DNA test would be a good way to start.

I did it, and within a week had solved the question of who exactly is my grandfather. That opened up that entire side of the family tree. We had always been told a name, but he denied it. Now, DNA has linked me to his side of the family. No question about it. Now I'm trying to figure out who my father's family was. He was adopted, and we know almost nothing about it, other than he was born in York, AL and adopted by the Carlton family in Linden, AL. I've heard that his birth mom was a teenager, and that she stayed 'with the Judge and his family' when she was pregnant. I don't know if that last part is true or not. I do know his birth date, and that he was born in York, though. I got my mom to take the test, so when her results come in, I can eliminate any that we share, and what's left should be from my dad's side.
