Her mental health has been wonderful over the last few months. She is loving university and really thriving, academically, socially and emotionally. Unfortunately she was hospitalised two weeks ago with severe tonsillitis and glandular fever. She had a lumbar puncture to rule out meningitis, was on IV antibiotics for four days and went back to university last Tuesday.
I dropped her at the GP this morning, as she felt the tonsillitis hadn't completely cleared up. The GP has sent her back to hospital as her spleen is enlarged, she has an odd rash and her tongue is swollen. DD is so upset; she has Maths exams next week, and a practical Music exam too (not that she can sing at all at the moment.)
Please send her your P&PT; she needs every bit of help she can get!

See if her uni offers an "incomplete" at semesters end. Many do just for students having the sort of issues she is having. It is at the discretion of the professor and departmental chairman but it allows for an extension at the end of the semester without penalizing the student. At my uni they can give up to a year for the student to complete the missing work (tests, papers, projects) She may be asked to document the time she is hospitalized but it will keep her from poor grades due to something she isn't in control over.

She is not unlucky. She has you for a mom.
Getting sick NEVER happens when we have nothing else to do but lay around and suffer. Let her know that and that nothing she misses out on is life ending, just inconvenient, disappointing, or difficult.

I will say prayers. I am sorry your daughter is so sick.
I think she should contact her professors by e-mail as soon as possible and let them know what is going on. As Volt suggested, they can probably give her an incomplete and let her take her exams when she is feeling better. I'm an adjunct professor at a community college and last semester I had a parent call my department head to advise him that her son was seriously ill and wouldn't be able to take the final (she did not know how to reach me directly because she didn't have a copy of the syllabus). I gave the student an incomplete and he came in several weeks later w/ a doctor's note and took his final. I thought it was fine for his mother to get involved given the circumstances.

Sending lots of healing vibes and positive thoughts to your DD. I hope her uni will give her an extension so she can make up the work and her grades don't suffer.

I had tonsillitis so severely and repeatedly in graduate school that I had to have my tonsils removed. The stress of school seems to exacerbate illnesses.
Hope she's feeling better soon!

I agree, that hopefully she can apply for mitigating circumstances Lesley. Poor girl - I hope she recovers really quickly. Don't forget how resilient the young are, they can amaze with their bounce back-ability Will be thinking of her.

This sounds like the mono I had as a college freshman. I hope she feels better soon, but be prepared that the fatigue can linger a few months. I had to reduce my class load. I agree that the school probably has a policy for hospitalized students to get an incomplete.
