Most of you have probably seen me blather on about the weight I gained after I started birth control. 26 pounds in just about one year. Eeeeeeks! Plus I was still up 10 pounds post partum. So in May I decided that I needed to change instead of just complaining about it. So I set a goal of losing 36 pounds (26 from BC and 10 from baby weight) in 6 mo. I thought that was doable. 6 pounds a month, 1 1/2 a week or so. That would put me back to my pre baby weight where I sat for years and am comfortable.
Boy was I wrong. I only lost 21 pounds.
We eat mostly clean foods. I used to eat a lot of nuts, homemade granola, organic cheese. All great choices, just high in calories. So I set my calories in MFP and stuck with it for the entire 6 mo. I also work out 5 days a week. It has been so slow to come off. I have an appointment with the DR this week to get off this wretched BC. Since we are done having babies, dh had a vasectomy so I had to wait until he was all clear from that.
The week before Thanksgiving I was so irritated that I didn't make my goal I fell off the wagon and let some sugar back in my diet. And now it's like a free for all!!! So much sugar at Thanks giving dinner. Pie, rolls, truffles. Ugh.
I made a commitment this weekend that I need to get back on track!! Once I let the sugar in it seems to get worse and worse and I feel totally addicted. So today is a new day and I am back in my routine.
But you know what going out of my routine cost me? 2 weeks with sugar in my diet? 4 pounds!!! It takes forever for me to lose a pound and I gained 4 in 2 weeks. Good thing I was still working out those 2 weeks!
Today is a new start but I am just so frustrated that I let this happen. So frustrated that I can be so totally addicted to sugar. So totally frustrated that working my a** off I can only lose 1/2 pound a week, but then can gain 4 in that short of time.
Anyone want to vent about weightloss with me? Or share any goals you have? Or even share any recipes!!

I'm not much overweight, maybe 7-10 pounds but I am properly addicted to sugar. Seriously addicted. I KNOW how bad it is for me, I get it, I understand but because I'm not overweight I kid myself that tomorrow will be fine....I'll stop eating it tomorrow, or I'll cut down at least but I don't but I must. I hear you

I hear you This is my sister! She is maybe 100 pounds sopping wet but her diet is a ton of sugar and fast food! I've seen her eat a candy bar for lunch and wash it down with soda. But she never gains weight. She is just like my dad, super high metabolism. I am in much better physical shape than she is. Even though I am older and I weigh more!
ETA: the longer you go without sugar the easier it gets with cravings and such. But if I fall, I fall hard. Apparently!
Make one change a day and see where it takes you.

You probably didn't gain 4 pounds! A sudden carb load will cause water retention - for me, about 2/3 - 3/4 of what the scale says is a gain, it's water weight. It'll woosh right back off if you go back to your plan. 21 pounds is nothing to sneeze at! I like to think of these frustrating times as "practicing maintenance." Or something.

I am digging my way out of a sugar coma this morning. The one thing that I have learned is to let go of the guilt and just get back on the horse. Losing weight is not easy but the rewards are worth it.

The stupid thing is that the rest of my diet is good.....no fast food, barely anything 'convenience/pre made, mostly home cooked from scratch stuff, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, rarely fry anything etc etc but after a meal I crave sweetness and fruit doesn't scratch that itch. It has to be chocolate......

This vent is made for me!
When I get pregnant I lose a lot of weight. It is seriously the best diet. I knew that when I was pregnant 3 years ago, I had one last chance to lose this weight as a big push and then it was up to me and being smart. I lost 23 pounds before I delivered. Went in to deliver the twins. I had a 6.5 baby and a 5.3 baby. When I left the hospital I was close to 40 pounds lighter than when I started my pregnancy. More exciting was that I was only 18 pounds away from the weight I was when I met my husband. I was ecstatic. Made new recipes, and made smarter choices. I have PCOS so I have to stay away from carbs. And I was!
Fast forward 4 months and my husband got sick. He was in the hospital to have a brain tumor removed. Stress out the wazoo and meals being delivered to my home sent any plan I had of eat healthy, right out the window. We had pasta dish after pasta dish delivered. And I ate it. And I gave thanks for the caring hands that made it.
And now I have gained all that weight back and more. I am 13 pounds higher than when I started my pregnancy. For years I was big but I had the same 2 pair of dress slacks that I love. They felt terrific and looked great. Well now they aren't so nice of a fit. And it is the loss of these 2 pants that make me realize that I'm done!!! I can't gain anymore weight. I hate myself. It is a harsh statement. But it fits. It fits better than my favorite pants at this point.
I'm going low carb. I don't know if I can get crazy at first with it. But I can avoid whites. I'm going to do a new goal a week. First week will be drinking water (6 glasses), next week will be have a new salad at lunch everyday. Goals to get me started. I'm going to invest in the Adkins book.
Sorry to steal your post. Like I said, it seemed made for me!

I feel your pain. I gave up sugar and eating between meals in July of last year and by April I was down 60 lbs. I stabilized there for a while, and even though I was still 30 lbs from my goal, I decided I could live with it. Over the summer, I stopped weighing myself and I got more and more relaxed about portions. I started drinking a lot of beer. Then I started drinking really sweet mixed drinks while out with co-workers, even while I was saying no to cookies and desserts. Next I went to Disney World for the food and wine festival and completely let myself go. After that, even though I was trying to stick to my "rules" I still cheated in some way about once a day, either adding a little honey to my oatmeal, or eating a snack after dinner.
I was finally brave enough to weigh myself the week before Thanksgiving, and I had gained 20 lbs! And in spite of that, I still can't get my eating under control! I've cut out alcohol again, but I ate a small bite of dessert at Thanksgiving, and later that night I ate a whole piece of cake with a pie baked into it.
I know what it takes for me to lose weight, but I have lost all willpower. I hate that I keep doing this to myself. I eat even past the point of enjoyment. I feel physically awful because of too much food, and the type of food I over-eat.
I'm trying again today. I haven't had sugar in 3 days, but I ate way too much pizza last night. Today will be better, right?

What I have seen people not consider when they are working out and losing weight is while you are losing fat you are gaining muscle. You may have actually lost more fat than you think because of the muscle gain.

The disproportionate-ness in the ability to gain and lose is maddening! It takes soooo long to lose pounds but they come right back in the blink of an eye. It shouldn't be that way and even defies science, in my opinion. Hop back on the wagon, keep plugging away. 21 pounds is AWESOME. Keep feeling good about that. But...I totally understand your vent.

What I have seen people not consider when they are working out and losing weight is while you are losing fat you are gaining muscle. You may have actually lost more fat than you think because of the muscle gain. I have been doing yoga/Pilates for probably 2 1/2 years and then high intensity kickboxing and cardio for the last 6 months. My core is wicked strong and I have actual muscles! Little baby triceps and definition in my back and shoulders! I know that may play some part and I shouldn't get hung up on the number on the scale but I thought it would go faster than this!

honestly you're lucky it was only 4 lbs! I've been on a low carb/no sugar carb varying diet for 3 months, lost 20lbs, going well. ate sugar for thanksgiving and it opened the door to a binge weekend. I weighed myself this morning and was happy the damage was only 4 lbs, considering in the past I've had binges where I've gained 7 or 8 in a weekend. a 2 week binge would set me back way more. it DOES suck that eating even something so small as a piece of candy just awakens that monster and makes me/us want to eat everything and anything sweet. how come vegetables can't feel that way?!

Everything you said, I could have said myself! It's so slow to come off and I have to work so hard at it, but it piles right on the minute I turn my back.
I have to be very disciplined to lose weight--and I'm not always very good at that!
But 21 lbs is really fabulous. Just keep at it. I lost 30 lbs over about 9 months or so, very slowly for my taste but I did manage it. I'd like to lose maybe 10 more but I've been saying that for about six months and haven't applied myself seriously enough for that to happen, I've just been maintaining. I'm slim enough in clothing and wear a size 6, but I could be a lot sleeker. It's just such a struggle :/

I am digging my way out of a sugar coma this morning. The one thing that I have learned is to let go of the guilt and just get back on the horse. Losing weight is not easy but the rewards are worth it. Hahaha, you did make me laugh out loud as I am in a bit of a carb fog this morning. I eat pretty low carb most of the time and can turn down most desserts without a problem, but between the pumpkin cheesecake and stuffing over the last few days, I know the scale is up and I'm not going to bother to weigh myself. I agree, let go of the guilt and get back on the horse kellybelly77. I also agree with @mochimochi, a lot of this weight gain is water and should drop a little faster once the sugar is out of the diet. For me, weight loss has gotten a lot harder as I get older and the (sad) truth is I need very little food to maintain my weight. Knowing portion size is super important and load up on vegetables. I love roast vegetables this time of year and they is on our menu tonight.

You lost 21 lbs!!! That's no small feat! It took you a year to put on 26 lbs and, in 6 months, you've lost almost all of that.
And that 4 lbs? Given that you have been eating a lot of sugar (carbs) I would guess that a good portion of that is water weight.
Keep at it!

Sugar is of the devil but tastes like it was made by angels! I know what you mean. I have lost 12 lbs (out of 24 I want to lose) this year and for the past few months have been maintaining this weight even eating a lot of stuff I wouldn't if I was calorie counting. It's been nice to have the freedom to eat stuff and not gain weight - but over the last week I've more than made up for it. The scale shows a 5-6 lb increase! Yikes! I knew I ate 'no holds barred' the past 2 weeks or so but good golly! I know that the number was so high due to having a sweet every night again. Even a small one, if I get in that habit the weight will come right back. Of course it took me almost 5 months to lose those 12 lbs and I gain half of it back in 2 weeks. I have restarted today though. All leftovers are gone from my house and I told my 16yo DD that we're having grilled chicken and veggies every night for dinner this week. (I'll probably get pizza for her tomorrow since it's $5 Tuesday but none for me) I'll also work out at least 5 days this week and eat healthy every meal with NO SWEETS! Hang in there everyone! It's always an uphill climb but we're building muscle as we climb.

The one thing that I have learned is to let go of the guilt and just get back on the horse. Amen. It's hard to hear self hatred and frustration. We're human. We fight aging and genetics and any number of other things. We're not perfect. Give yourself a hug for just putting yourself out there once more and start again. Kick ass for sure, but be kind to yourself as well.

21 pounds in six months is fantastic! A one pound weight loss per week is very healthy.
You need to be proud of it!

I've gained about 26 lbs since changing jobs two and a half years ago and needed to lose a little before that. I recently started the 5:2 diet and have been more successful than other plans in the past. There is a Facebook group that is really helpful and you can find info online. There are also books and a documentary. Basically, two days a week you stick to 500 calories or less and the other days you eat sensibly. Today starts my 5th week. I have lost 5/6 lbs. last week I didn't lose for some reason but I am hoping this week will be a loss again.

I have about 30 lbs to lose. I've tried exercise, and counting calories (although I always end up getting sick the week I decide to do this). I had a sinus infection in July and had to force myself to eat for 3 weeks and lost 5 pounds but gained it back the instant I started eating again. Otherwise besides getting sick nothing works! Exercise doesn't help, it must be my diet... so about 3 weeks ago I cut down on buying sugar and candy, crackers, and am trying to eat one serving of dinner. How much have I lost? 0 pounds.
I am apparently destined to be 170 lbs for the rest of my life.

I'm no diet expert but I've lost just over 30 pounds since August 1st with PLENTY more to go. I;m working with an integrative medical team and one thing my nutritionist told me was that gluten could cause weight retention. Went off gluten, soy, dairy, eggs corn and sugar and it just fell off. I'm eating egg whites and teeny bits of soy and while I'm still losing, it's just not as fast.
