On the thread about the Kindle someone said they wouldn't buy a Kindle Fire because it was "locked down" to Amazon. Meaning, I guess, that it only works with Amazon?
My dd asked for a Fire for Christmas. She has a laptop for school, a Kindle Paperwhite, but no tablet. I asked her why she wanted a tablet and she said "for taking a few notes in classes where there isn't a lot to write down" (me, I'm thinking "how about an old-fashioned paper and pen?" lol), and "watching movies" and "just browsing around on a screen bigger than my phone" and "my laptop is too heavy to drag everywhere" (she has one with a CD drive so it's heavier than one without that).
I'm don't think she picked the Fire for any particular reason other than one roommate has one and she heard her brother talking about how they were on sale at the moment.
We do have Amazon Prime so she watches a lot of their streaming stuff. Does that work only with a Kindle? I know it works on my laptop but I've never tried it on my iPad because the iPad is so old now and I'm afraid to update it because it might lock up.
Anyway, tell me the pros and cons of whatever tablet you might have, please... ? And don't assume I know anything, so more information is better. lol

If she has an iPhone get her an iPad. If she has an Android phone, I would get her a Samsung tablet. That way they will sync. JMHO.

I have a samsung galaxy S3 tablet (10") and an ipad mini. My experience-the galaxy tab is okay but can get choppy and freeze up at times. I don't have many apps on it-I mainly use it for craftsy videos (I can cast them to my tv using chromecast) and reading magazines on zinio. It will not charge at all if I use any cable or wall plug other than the ones that came with it, which annoys me immensely. I have a lot of different wall chargers and cables and it would be nice if I could just grab one and use it. Nope.
My ipad mini is smooth and seamless. It never gets choppy or freezes up. I mainly bought it to download craftsy video that I want to watch on the go since the iOS app is the only one that allows this. I also read books using the kindle app and when I'm lying in bed and can't sleep, I use it for pinterest and facebook. I don't have apple tv so I can't cast to my tv but I wish I could.
Out of the two I prefer the ipad mini and I never thought I'd say that (my phone is, and will always be, android).
eta: there is an amazon video app for the samsung. Not sure about ipad-I never checked. However, I have heard rumors that amazon streaming works best on amazon devices. I don't know if this is true but it doesn't work worth a darn on my roku, smart tv, or samsung tablet. I have a fire stick coming so I'll see if it works better on it. If not, it's going back.

I agree with cadoodlebug . Get a tablet that's in the same ecosystem as her phone. I would stay away from the Fire, personally.

Love my Kindle Fire, especially for transportation. I can just toss it in my purse and go. I surf the web, watch movies, read email, play games and read books on it. There's pros and cons with every tablet though.

I will say that Amazon Instant Video streams perfectly on my iphone and ipad mini and has for years. We also have a Samsung tablet and I prefer it to the Fire, which we had and returned.

We have an older Fire, one of the first, I believe. And I'm not impressed- although surely there have been many improvements since that one came out- it's completely useless for any "tablet" needs other than Amazon's limited apps and video. I won't buy another, even for my kids' use.
However, I love my iPad Air. I have the Amazon video app and the kindle app, no problems with either. I was one of those who scoffed at anything Apple for years. But I have fallen head over heels for my iPhone and iPad. Effortless. The next laptop I buy will be a Mac.
My husband has a Windows Surface, and he likes it okay. He likes that he has MS Office, but there aren't many apps. He'd prefer a newer one because it's not a mobile device, and he could add programs, not apps.

I was also looking at the Kindles for the grandkids to use at my house. I have an android phone & tablet for my use that has a lot of apps already purchased. I realized that those would not work with the Kindle. I went with a Samsung Tab 4. It's a 7" tablet & all my Google play aps transferred with no problems.
I agree with the above poster, choose the same operating system as her phone. Hope this helps.

I have an iPhone and a Fire. I use the Fire for games, surfing just a little, YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Streaming. I love it. I don't do a ton on it, though.
What I don't like ~ no YouTube app, my Facebook has started taking forever, and Tumblr sucks both on it's app and a browser.
But for the little I use it for, I love it. I bought one for my son last week when it was $35. If my choices were a $35 Fire and a several hundred dollar iPad, no choice really.

I have a kindle fire that I got for "free" when we bought our furniture a few years ago. I ordered kindle fires for dh, ds, my mom, and I when they were 34.99 last week. I have an android phone. I don't have any issues with my phone having a different operating system than my tablet. I don't necessarily think a tablet is going to work for taking notes though. If you aren't hampered by price, what about a Microsft Surface? That is probably what we will replace ds' laptop with before he goes to college next fall. He likes that it is lighter than a laptop, but he can still use the keyboard.

My niece and nephew both have Surfaces, they were originally given one in school (all the students got one), my sister got them their own two Christmases ago. They really do like them, but they've both had issues with the power supply and charging. My niece had hers replaced once under warranty and now the replacement won't hold a charge either.

I have an ipad2 and an android phone and they sync calendars and stuf through my gmail account. I don't know how it does it, because it isn't anything I set up, but it does have to do with my gmail account. My husband has a surface pro for work and loves it, and he has a fire for goofing off with which he also loves. I think there are a lot of pros and cons with any tablet. I would think if it really is for school a surface is the way to go.

I have a Samsung Tab 4 8" tablet. I love it. I bought it after getting the same for my son last Christmas. I have an iPhone 6+. It's nice to have the larger screen without the bulk of a laptop. I've had no performance issues. I use it to watch movie including Prime movies. Netflix, Hulu, VUDU and streaming from our cable box.

I have a samsung tab 3 and find it easy to use. I have an android phone. I'm old school though and could never use a tablet for notes. I would have to have the keyboard to go with it.
I just purchased a fire because of the price and the opportunity to download shows to it so that I can watch when wi-fi is not possible. Now that I think about it, I should have bought more than one so the kids could have one. I listen to West Wing as I fall asleep and I keep going over my data because of it. I am hoping having some episodes downloaded eases my wi-fi.

I was going to get a Kindle Fire for my son--and was shocked to learn that most of the features will not be functional in Canada (where son resides). I have no idea if that situation has changed, but as of the summer of 2015, the Fire would not be a choice for Canadians.
My brother, his son and my SIL have the Kindle Fire and like it for their needs.

I bought my dgd a Kindle fire about 3 years ago and it has been a godsend. Best thing ever.
I just ordered one for myself.
Although it's locked down to Amazon, you can download programs like Netflix and it more than doubles the amount of viewing activities available. I tend to use my phone for browsing the web so it doesn't make much difference if the Kindle isn't as "good" as the ipad. For 1/4 the price it does more than I need it to do.

I like my kindle as an ereader, naturally, but it does do a pretty good job with basic web browsing, accessing email, etc.
