I don't know if I'm looking for enabling or talking out of a purchase, but I've been trying to justify the purchase price of Prismacolor pencils for a long time. Right now Amazon has the 48 count set for $29.64 (not free shipping though - that's $5.49 - which is $0.72 per pencil) and the 72 count set for $50.14, which is $0.70 per pencil. Realistically speaking, is 72 colors even necessary? Is this a good deal? I'm by no means an artist & would be using them for coloring books. I'd say I could do some shopping for my husband for me, but I've already done a lot of that this year!

I got the 72 count set after testing my MIL's set she had won (much larger). I love them and use them for my coloring books too. That's a good deal and if you color a lot I say go for it :-)

And the 128 (?) set was around $65. Yes, I think this is a great deal for these pencils, and they're awesome for things like coloring books. And of course, 72 (or more) is by no means a necessity, but it sure is fun.

Even the 72 wasn't big enough for me - I ended up buying some individual pencils in different shades to expand my 72 set that I bought.

I still gave my 72 Prisma color set from college. I'm sure at this point none of the pencils are original anymore because I do use it. Lol but I'd say it was well worth the investment. My DD absconded with it because the new ones don't have a tin. Haha

I got a small set at Michaels to try them out to see if it was worth the money for a big set. I really like them they are so much better than other colored pencils. I asked for the 48 pencil set for Christmas. We don't spend a lot on adults so I couldn't ask for the bigger set but I'd love to get it.

The Prisma colors are fabulous. For just coloring I also love the Crayola brand. but when I want to do serious stuff, I use the Prismas. I use my Dove blender to blend them. The Dove blender does not work as well with the Crayola brand. Use the blender with the 48 set and you will have more color options.

Personally, I found the 72 pack of cra-z-art colored pencils from WalMart to work just as well as the prismas I had. In fact, I sold my prismacolors.
Price on the Cra-Z-Art? $5.72.

Realistically speaking, is 72 colors even necessary? I have the set of 72 Derwents, and I say it is totally necessary! Even with 72 colours there are not enough purples and pinks for my liking. So much so that I recently investigated buying the box of 120 colours, but at over $300 I couldn't justify it !!

My mom has gotten into the coloring book frenzy and I lent her my set of 72 Prismacolor pencils. She says there are not enough colors and she needs more!!

Dang it! I wished I had seen this earlier. My dd is wanting a set for Christmas. When I went to Amazon, it is showing but when I put it in my cart I get a message they are no longer available from that supplier for that price. Dang it! I'll keep watching.

Thanks for posting about this. I have been planning to use my JoAnn's 60% off coupon online (good Dec 3-6) to buy a set of 48. The price on Amazon with free shipping is better than using the 60% off and paying shipping at JoAnn's.

Well, my daughter is in art school and she says always buy the biggest pack you can because you never know which color of grey you are going to need! Thanks for the tip about price. I need to get her some for Christmas.

They are really some of the best around. My daughter loves them and I can always tell a difference from when she uses prism color or just regular colored pencils. The colors are just richer and she says they glide smoother.

did not read all posts but what are you ladies using to blend...baby oil, Gamsol, other?and are you finding it bleed to the other page?
The other thing is, what are you using to sharpen them? The lead color seems to break or splinter easily..

I use a Prismacolor blending pencil to blend and the $5-6 Prismacolor pencil sharpener - black plastic thing - to sharpen my pencils. I love that it gives you a choice of two styles of points to sharpen to.

The price on Amazon with free shipping is better than using the 60% off and paying shipping at JoAnn's. Just as a heads up, I was hoping to do a similar deal at Michael's this week with my 50% coupon. But they had the Prismacolors on sale at 25% off so of course I couldn't use my coupon. I have a feeling this will be a pretty consistent scenario, at least through the holidays. And another thing - Michael's has a nice selection of coloring books, but they put up a sign that as of Nov. 27th (or something like that) you can't use coupons on them.

It was here or somewhere else that I read a make-up pencil sharpener would work just as well. I found one for 99 cents at the drugstore, and it works great! It also gives the two point styles.

The lead color seems to break or splinter easily.. I found that I didn't like baby oil. I do like the Gamsol, but honestly, I just layer and layer and layer until I get the results I want. I don't know that coloring books would hold up to the Gamsol unless the paper was pretty thick.

My kids have a set of prismacolors for their important school projects, along with the sharpener, but I'm wondering what the difference is between the point styles?

A friend taught me a technique of using Mineral Spirits (you buy in art department) to blend my Prismacolor pencils. It looks so good. I tried to find a video on this but didn't find a good one. Will look again and try to update this thread.
