the Thanksgiving dinner he plans goes terribly wrong, everyone sort of invites themselves to it, and they have to eat jellybeans, toast, popcorn. But then it all goes okay in the end when he gets to bring all his friends with him to his family's Thanksgiving. (I'm a Charlie Brown fan!!) Even the one where Snoopy leaves to go back to see his previous owner (a little girl who's sick, I think?), it all turns out okay in the end because Snoopy goes back home to Charlie Brown. When I was a little kid, I thought the jelly beans and toast for Thanksgiving was cool. As an adult, I relish the smackdown Marcy lays on Peppermint Patty, and enjoy the Jack Shelton music. I'm a big Charlie Brown fan as well. There's definitely a dark side to the Peanuts world, but I think Schultz was ultimately an optimist. I read his biography a few years ago, and boy, did it put a new light on the dynamics between all the kids. Schultz was a depression-era kid, an only child and somewhat of a loner. He was gifted, shy and extremely philosophical. I see him in multiple characters, not just Charlie Brown, but Linus and Schroder too. Lucy became more of a conduit for his struggles with his first wife, and in a very public way that wasn't fair for her, but perhaps he felt nobody would connect the dots. Fascinating person. Very fascinating. Now I want to read his book. I've never been a huge fan of CB. I watch the Christmas special because the kids like it. But you're right. It's depressing and sad. LOL I do love Schroeder and the sass that comes from Lucy. But overall, eh, not my thing.

I was just thinking, the other night while watching A Charlie Brown Christmas for probably the 45th year of my life, that Chuck represents hope in each of us. Imperfect as he is and sad sack that he sometimes seems, he never stops believing and trusting, always thinking there must be more to life, and he is a kind of antidote to the cynicism in his world - and ours.
But he really needs to stop trying to kick that football.

...melancholy is the perfect word!!
(and I too, always hope against hope that he will NOT try to kick the football... lol!)

I took my kids (11 & 7) to see the Peanuts movie a few weeks ago. My 7ds said it was sad.

I went to see the Charlie Brown movie, Peanuts, that's in the theater this last weekend. They had all the cliched characters in it but it had a great ending. Charlie Brown came out on the winning side! It had good values. ^^^ as much as I love the Peanuts comic strip and the tv specials, I'm leery of how they did the movie, and I'm not sure yet whether I want to see it-- was it computer animated, or did it have the 'look' of the television specials?? and pierogi , thanks for the info-- I will definitely have to put Charles Shulz's biography on my Goodreads to-read list! It is computer generated, but I read that they worked with the Schultz family to get the "feel" of it right. I would like to see it, but probably will wait until I can buy it on DVD or BluRay.

I like Snoopy, but I think that's because of the Snoopy and the Red Baron song by the Royal Guardsmen. I don't like the Peanuts comic strip or the TV specials. I hate how mean everyone is to Charlie Brown.

I thought the movie was great and really true to the specials. Tons of references and scenes and bits from them. I really enjoyed it.

I always hated Charlie Brown tv specials and comics. He chooses to be a loser every time. Pathetic. And not funny.

We watched the Christmas special last night for the first time in years. I forgot how mean the kids are to Charlie Brown. I don't think I'll watch it again unless someone makes me.
The Halloween special is just awful--even the adults are mean and give Charlie Brown rocks.
I think Linus might be the only redeeming character in those shows.

Yep. I cannot watch - the whole thing depresses me and makes me angry. And snoopy is an asshole. No thanks.
