I avoid the TV specials because they're depressing.
Lucy is mean to him, and other things don't pan out for him either (help me here-- I can't remember other details, but I know he got disappointed repeatedly)
Do you have feelings about the TV shows happy or sad?

I always feel a bit sorry for Charlie Brown, but the sadness is tempered by the fact that he perseveres, no matter what happens to him.
-- his kite always gets stuck in the kite-eating tree -- Lucy always pulls away the football -- his Halloween costume goes all wrong, and all he gets is a rock instead of candy -- he waits all night in the pumpkin patch with Linus for The Great Pumpkin
-- his Christmas special gets out-of-control and he gets stuck with a really crappy Christmas tree...
BUT-- the Christmas tree turns out beautiful, and everything goes right again when Linus tells the Christmas story and they remember the real meaning of Christmas and do more than focusing on the material things.
And his dog loves him, no matter what happens!!

I enjoy the shows, but I don't over analyze them either. Lucy is a pill, but most of the other kids are good. .Linus, Pepoermint Patty and Marcie are all friends with CB and aren't mean to him. I kind of like how CB just rolls with things and just keeps trying, you have to admire his perseverance. I think the shows are funny and I do enjoy Linus's take on things, the Christmas special is particularly great, I think. I won't watch the ones where Snoopy leaves though, that one is too sad.

the Thanksgiving dinner he plans goes terribly wrong, everyone sort of invites themselves to it, and they have to eat jellybeans, toast, popcorn. But then it all goes okay in the end when he gets to bring all his friends with him to his family's Thanksgiving.
(I'm a Charlie Brown fan!!)
Even the one where Snoopy leaves to go back to see his previous owner (a little girl who's sick, I think?), it all turns out okay in the end because Snoopy goes back home to Charlie Brown.

I HATE Peanuts so much. despise it.
It's so depressing. Beyond depressing.
I've never understood why people like it.
Every single thing about it - from the minimalist style, to the music, to the voices, to the way the characters treat each other - annoys the hell out of me.

My children hate the Peanuts tv shows! Breaks my holiday heart!
ETA maybe it's a generational thing? They were new when I was a kid, we even had the music in church and elementary (grade!) school programs.
I never thought about the simplicity, maybe it was appealing because society was going through so many changes? There was war, riots, post-assassinations in real life and for first time that chaos was being broadcast on television.
Unfortunately, we now see that everyday...

I've never liked Charlie Brown. Stand up for yourself, man! He's wishy washy and timid and lets people walk all over him.

I feel so much better after seeing this thread. I was telling my husband last night (who is a huge CB fan) that I have never liked it. The animation, the music and the storyline is just not interesting to me. Such a downer.
Sally is funny though - I do laugh at her!

I think the Charlie Brown cartoon specials are SO depressing. My kids have been watching them and love them. I remember now why I hated them as a kid. Even the music is depressing.

DS (age 3 1/2) does NOT like Lucy bc she's so mean to Charlie Brown. Every time she comes on the screen, he yells at her and tells her "no! No! No," when she's mean.

I can't stand the way the kids great each other, and I always thought Peppermint Patty's "apology" after Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving dinner was crap. The Halloween episode especially broke my heart as a kid. I couldn't stand the disappointment for Charlie Brown while Trick or Treating.
That felt good to get out.

I don't watch things that make me feel bad. My DH loves the Peanuts, I can't stand them. It's not over-analyzing, it's just not fun for me. It's sad. Every. Single. Time.

I love Peanuts. Always have. My dad got me started with them when I was 4 and he'd read me the funnies out of the Sat morning paper every weekend. (remember the comic section was HUGE!)
Charles Shultz once said that Charlie Brown was reminiscent of Charles himself as a kid. Timid, a worrier, and pushed around. He created the character like that to show kids that even in times of difficulty and strife, that you can persevere and overcome bullies and disappointments.
Sometimes I think it's a bit over the top, like the Valentines one where he doesn't get any at the class party and his candy heart says something mean.
However, at the end of that one, violet gives him a used valentine and Schroder stands up for CB and tells her off.
I think the stories were intended to teach people to stand up for the underdog and treat people with kindness? Pretty sure I read that in and article somewhere.

I guess I always thought that Charlie Brown was supposed to remind every kid of themselves, at one time or another. Every kid sometimes feels like the other kids are mean, like they are being left out of the group, that things don't go right, etc. As others have pointed out, the "lesson" is that CB perseveres and, in one way or another, it always works out okay for him.

That's how I remember it. Charlie Brown was an "Everyman" type of character. If written today would he get a participation ribbon for decorating his tree? Lucy would be ostracized for being a bully, not just bossy?

Charlie Brown Christmas is an essential watch for me. I always loved the the sweetness and essential goodness of his character, even when everyone else around him, (even his dog, LOL) are acting like brats. I also love the music by Vince Guaraldi.

How can anyone not like Snoopy? Even though the shows are kind of depressing, I like them because it gives me opportunities to have teachable moments with my kid. Life isn't all rainbows and unicorns and kids need to learn how to deal with disappointment when things don't go their way. We're dealing with a lot of that right now in our house. When we watch shows like that I ask her questions like "Was that nice of Lucy to pull away the football? How do you think Charlie feels when everyone is laughing at him?" These are the kinds of things that happen to every kid at some point or another, so it's good to show them another way to react if and when they are presented with a situation where someone is making fun of someone else, or someone is not being nice. I want my kid to be brave enough to take the high road and be the nice kid instead of jumping in and piling on with everybody else.

When I was a little kid, I thought the jelly beans and toast for Thanksgiving was cool. As an adult, I relish the smackdown Marcy lays on Peppermint Patty, and enjoy the Jack Shelton music. I'm a big Charlie Brown fan as well. There's definitely a dark side to the Peanuts world, but I think Schultz was ultimately an optimist. I read his biography a few years ago, and boy, did it put a new light on the dynamics between all the kids. Schultz was a depression-era kid, an only child and somewhat of a loner. He was gifted, shy and extremely philosophical. I see him in multiple characters, not just Charlie Brown, but Linus and Schroder too. Lucy became more of a conduit for his struggles with his first wife, and in a very public way that wasn't fair for her, but perhaps he felt nobody would connect the dots. Fascinating person.

I went to see the Charlie Brown movie, Peanuts, that's in the theater this last weekend. They had all the cliched characters in it but it had a great ending. Charlie Brown came out on the winning side! It had good values.

I have always loved the Peanuts gang. The very first time I remember laughing hystericlly was when reading a Peanuts comic book. Lucy washed their basebll uniforms and shrunk them and turned them light pink. The cap wouldnt stay on Charlie's head so Lucy put a pink ribbon on it and tied it under his chin. There was a frame with Charlie looking directly at the reader with this tiny pink hat tied on his gigantic head and I completely cracked up. It was early in the morning and no one was up and I put the covers over my head to muffle the sound.
also, BEST theme song ever. i love that entire album.

I always enjoyed the Peanuts comic strips when I was a kid, and I love Snoopy, but I do find the specials to be a little melancholy. Maybe the 60s and 70s were a harsher time or something, but as an adult it takes me aback to hear the kids call Charlie Brown a blockhead!
