What would you suggest as a gift for someone who wants to learn to knit? If you suggest needles, what size?

There are some things, like colorful little stitch markers, that would be nice. Also a little plastic needle holder for the kind of needle you use when you have to sew a seam.

A nice basket with a lid to keep yarn and/or the knitting project and yarn. LOTS and LOTS of glorious yarn. You can just never have enough yarn! If the person has not knitted before, you might try to get them some round looms. That is how I learned and it is super easy. Oh, and did I mention YARN? Yarn is more addictive than scrapbook supplies!

I would purchase the Vogue book of Knitting. Its a wonderful reference. Needles are a personal choice and there are so many different types and sizes. Or how about a gift certificte to a local yarn shop, if you have any of those around.

Needles tend to be a personal preference. I started with cheap metal ones. Then I found bamboo ones and prefer those.
When you say new knitter, do you mean they are still learning and are in the small flat project stage? Or they haven't started at all?

I taught myself to knit and it was overwhelming at first. If you have a yarn shop, get their advice for an easy project and then get the needles, yarn, and directions. Put it all in a cute tote bag, add a gift certificate for more yarn and you'll be the recipient's best friend forever! If you don't have a yarn shop, go to your craft store and buy a couple of skeins of the yummiest yarn they have and buy bamboo needles in the needle size listed on the yarn's label. More hit and miss, but still gives the person a starting point. If they're like me, they'll start with a scarf because rectangles are so easy.
