The last few months I have been trying out the concept of once a month shopping and I think I'm liking it. We live 25 minutes from Aldi's and Walmart, but have 2 more expensive stores within a few minutes of our house. I have started making one big trip to Aldi's and Walmart at the beginning of the month to try to get most of what we need for the month. Then I give myself a smaller weekly budget to pick up the few things we run out of each week like fresh produce and milk or things that are a great sale. If you shop like this do you feel you are spending more or less than shopping each week. I've always been a weekly grocery shopper, but I'm thinking that doing it this way will actually save me money. (at least it feels like it will) It's not fun to spend so much at the store at once, but I like having most of what I need to feed the family for the month all at once. I also figured winter was a good time to try this out since we get a lot of snow where I live and less trips to the store sounds great.

I do this bc I hate grocery shopping.
I think the money works out the same for us, but I spend a lot less time in the store.

I live 25 miles or more from any store except the small store in the next town.
I go once a week or every other week. I buy my beef in a side or a quarter.
What I find lowers my bill is having an idea of what I am making and then shopping from a list. The list is the big thing.
I also have the calculator on my phone and add up everything I buy. I try to do 150 or less per week for a family of 4. It's about 50/50 if I hit that mark, but there are also weeks I don't make it at all (I haven't been in almost 2.5 weeks right now), do it evens out.

My biggest issue with this is that I hate the time I have to spend thinking up a month of meals and snacks and figuring out the ingredients for all of them. ugh.
I agree that winter's the time to do it, though. Produce like citrus or apples can last a darn long time, as will root vegetables, so it cuts down on the small produce runs, and I look for any excuse to avoid extra errands in the cold, snowy, icy weather.

I have before--when we only got paid once a month and were on a very tight budget. It worked well for us then. The key was to have a big freezer. These days I shop weekly. I find that we waste less food that way, but I still have to try hard not to over buy. I grew up poor, and I think I still harbor a fear of not having enough food.
I don't know how shooping weekly vs monthly has affected my budget because I am less budget conscious now and more focused on healthier, whole foods.

We shop close to once a month, depending on what is happening. We also use delivery and have found that we don't spend as much as we used to. Even though we can do some impulse buying while we order, it is not nearly as it used to be. Every week or two I pick up fresh fruit at the store though.

I do this. I menu plan a month out and make my shopping lists. I hit Walmart and Costco once a month and then a local grocery store one a week for perishables.
To be honest I just buy what we need or have plans for without too much thought on budget. That being said I spend about the same at Walmart and Costco each month.
I will also stock up on sale items we use as they come up.

I don't but but maybe I should I hate grocery shopping, expecially in the winter. I'm not good at meal planning though, how do you all do that? Do you have an app or just write a list each month?

I order groceries once a week using the Walmart app. I show up at the drive thru at my selected time and they load up my car. It's super quick and easy. I hate grocery shopping, so this works for me! I still stop at the fruit market because I like choosing my own fruits & veggies.

I do a big trip about every 3 weeks. We live 30 minutes from a military commissary. It's well worth the trip, as prices (especially on meat) are so much cheaper. But we live in the DC area and traffic is horrible and unpredictable and 95 is always under some sort of construction. So I make a meal plan and just go for it. It takes me about 2 hours to do the shopping, but I usually can save a lot with coupons this way. Usually about $30 or 10%. I just spent the night pulling recipes and making up my list for tomorrow.
It's putting it all away that I hate. It takes about an hour after I get home. So a big trip will take me 4-5 hours depending on how long it's been between trips. The. I spend the next day breaking down meat into meal sized portions, cooking up ground beef, baking chicken, putting a brisket in the crockpot, etc. but then I have ready made meals for the rest of the month and it minimizes the space it takes up in my freezer. The pre-cooking that I do makes the long trip worthwhile, as we seldom eat out when we need a quick meal.
We have an extra fridge and a big pantry, which helps a lot. I'll make a trip to Wegman's when I run out of produce. And I buy our milk at Costco, which also has great produce. I probably spend another $100 on the in between trips. I know it helps us cut back on junk food. I only buy chips at the commissary unless we need something to take to an event/potluck.

I shop every 2 weeks. We are a family of 4 with 2 high schoolers and my DH works from home. I am a SAHM. So, we eat at home A LOT and my kids both take lunches. I spend $500 every trip.

Once a month is a dream / goal. I don't even know how to make that happen!

I love the idea. I tried it a few months and missed shopping sales. What I found out that worked for me was making a list of 30 meals then making sure I had the ingredients for these meals on hand minus produce. This way if I found a fabulous deal on chicken I could pick up produce while I was there.

I do once a month shopping at Winco and buy staples, but I go once a week for other things. I don't mind grocery shopping though especially when I am doing my weekly shopping. We have a "produce market" that is small enough it isn't daunting, I can get good fresh food and they have weekly specials on mochas or lattes so I get a treat while shopping! I tried month shopping when the kids were at home, but I had too hard of a time menu planning for that long.

I can't even imagine that. We shop almost daily. I suppose if I lived very far from grocery stores I would have to do that. It would require a level of organization that I cold only dream of having.

I do the 'big shopping' even less often than this. I live alone though, so I think it is much easier for me to just go a few times a year and really stock up on non-perishables than it would be if I had a family to feed. I then go every couple of weeks for things like milk (I have a big freezer and will buy 4 gallons at a time and only keep out one at a time) eggs, cheese, produce, etc. I am transitioning to a whole food plant based diet though, so I know that is going to have to change when my meals include more fresh fruits and vegetables. But since I'll be shopping mostly in the produce section those trips will be more in-and-out then my shopping trips every few weeks are now.

I used to do a big monthly shop when I starting using a monthly meal plan, but I would still have to do a weekly shop for things like fruit and vegetables and milk etc, as well as the things that I had forgotten or run out of. Now I am back to doing weekly shops.
I like the idea of monthly shops, as long as you are organised enough to have a set meal plan.

I do this when I'm "on my game". I plan out meals for a month and then get everything I need. I may need to pop in to get a perishable item but it's usually less than 10 minutes in/out. I love doing this and really should be more consistent at it. I know what's coming and can prep in advance as much as possible.

Our schedules are far too variable to plan meals a month in advance. In addition, I need deli meat for lunches for all 3 of us, and that is done weekly, along with produce. I have a chest freezer, so we do have quite a bit of meat and I have shelving units with various canned goods in the basement, so I do have some things on hand.

just the opposite - we have gone to more, smaller trips to the grocery as we have striven to eat a more whole, unprocessed diet

I'm the opposite ... I shop pretty much everyday ... this has reduced the amount of food we waste because I only buy exactly what I need for that days meals I realize that this is not an option for everyone though ... I'm a SAHM and so I have the time to do it

I did it a lot more when I was on a much tighter budget and lived about an hour away from a large grocery store. I still go to Costco once a month to stock up on meat, can goods, dry goods that are much cheaper there. I go weekly to Kroger and put up whatever is on sale and fresh produce.

Thanks for the feed back. I don't really meal plan per say, but I seem to make the same rotation of meals that my family all likes each month so I just stock up on the items needed to make our stand by meals. If we randomly find a new recipe that doesn't use my normal ingredients (for example I always have chicken and ground beef in the freezer), then I add it to my list for the next quick trip to the store. I'm thinking this process might work better if I actually meal planned, but for now this is working well enough.

Hmm intriguing idea, I might have to give it a shot. I make weekly menu planning/grocery lists and that is a PITA every week so I can get just making a whole month. I think my trouble will be freezer space but I think I will give this a try and see how it works. Then just made the run for incidentals like milk, fresh produce, etc.

From what I can recall, from when we have tried this in the past, we spent right around the same amount of money.

Actually, as I've gotten older with fewer people in the house, I find that I'm going more often. And weirdly, that is okay with me. A lot of times, it seems like food lasts longer than I think it will, or there are leftovers of something that I hadn't thought would produce them. Throw in an event or two during the week, and certain dinners in my meal plan never get made, sometimes with the result that an ingredient or two goes bad before I end up using it. Going more often means that I can adjust things as I go along, and I like that. I get out of work a little earlier than most, so I've found I can make it to the store and be in the check out area before the after-work thongs hit.

I go to Walmart probably 6 times a week. Planning ahead for meals a month at a time is not my idea of fun. I sometimes don't have a dinner plan until late in the afternoon. We are still using up Thanksgiving leftovers so tonight I'm adding Beer Battered Shrimp as the meat item.
