Over the weekend while petting our dogs neck, dh noticed his lymph nodes were swollen. I made him an appt and got him in right away. I just thought he probably had an infection somewhere, that we'd pick up some meds and be on our way. But I could tell right off, after the vet examined the other lymph glands, that this was bad news. Today we got the results in - lymphosarcoma. To make matters worse, he is diabetic. The vet felt that he would not be able to take any cancer drugs because we would not be able to keep his diabetes regulated. That said, he suggested we go to an oncologist and just see what's out there for drugs. I'm pretty much being told that my perfectly normal looking, active, sweet loving dog has only 3-4 weeks, that this is very aggressive cancer. I'm so sad. Anyone been there? Any thoughts or advice for me?

I'm so sorry. We just had to put my beautiful dog to sleep. It's heartbreaking to lose a pet. If your dog only has a few weeks left...do everything he loves and spend quality time with him. Make a doggie bucket list. He'll let you know when it's time to go. I'm so sorry. I know you must be so sad.

That's awful. Our pup of 12 years died last year right before Christmas. He was only sick for about 40 hours. It still makes me cry if I think about it much at all.

My 11 YO Toy poodle was diagnosed with an 'aggressive' cancer last March. 6-12 months. WE decided not to do any chemo even though it is gentler on dogs than people, he is only 5 pounds and already a senior dog. No one would know he was sick to be honest. He is doing so well. we take it one day at a time.
Its not lymphoma, its an adreal cancer I think.
Love on your pup. Best Wishes.

I am so sorry. I lost a dog over 15 years ago to a type of Sarcoma that came on extremely suddenly. There is no way to make it easy...it still is a time that is difficult for me to remember and look back on. Just love your dog, extra treats, cuddles and hugs every day.

I lost a four year old sheltie when he developed lymphoma after his vaccinations. We did not know it was lymphoma until a necropsy 3 weeks after the shots. Until he died, we worked so hard to save him, as it was thought his symptoms were a dog form of Epstein barre.
I am so sorry you are going through this. In hindsight, I wish we would have known he was going to die, as we worked so hard with so much hope of saving him. We could have spoiled him and just loved on him instead of doing the special exercises and given all those meds they prescribed. Enjoy the time you have.
Again, I am so very sorry.

I'm so sorry for the bad news. I had a young dog (5 years old) who didn't have lymphosarcoma, but did have an aggressive cancer that had spread to her liver and spleen by the time the cancer was diagnosed. I opted not to put her through chemo. I'm sorry you are faced with making the decision about cancer drugs; I remember it being so hard to do this when I was in shock and so sad.

In so sorry. My mother had s dog she loved like a baby that died very quickly from lymphoma ( this was back in the early 80's and as far as I remember, the vet didn't offer any treatment .)
They had planned to have him put to sheep at the 'right' time, but as it happened he died peacefully in his sleep about 5 weeks after diagnosis . My dad was cuddling him because they took it in turns each night to sleep curled up with him so he wouldn't be alone at night. My mum took such comfort from that.

I am so sorry. Yes, our boxer developed lymphoma at 8 years old. We had a few months with him before he passed. He was our first dog together and I still get sad about it. But, he didn't seem to be in pain, just tired.

I'm so sorry. My parents had a similar situation only by the time it was caught, she passed away almost immediately. One week, she was normal. The next, she was very weak, not herself so my parents took her in. She passed away a couple days later, after the test came back with cancer. She was only 5 years old and was a breed that normally lives 15 years or so.

My cat had this happen. In July he was fine at his regular check up. At the end of September he had a weird bump on his neck. Within a few weeks he was gone. The vet didn't recommend drug treatment due to it's overall short impact and my cats age. It sucks. I hope you have a good few weeks with your sweet pup. Love and treats and special time together. It's not easy. (((Hugs)))

First I'll say I'm so sorry for this devastating diagnosis for your sweet dog. Lymphoma is not a cancer that typically responds well to chemo and the rate at which it returns is fairly high. I have one friend that has a girl that was diagnosed with lymphoma when she was 5 so young. She was financially able to make the commitment to the treatment protocol and made huge changes in what she fed her girl. There was some research done in Colorado at the veterinary school there regarding a cancer starving /fighting diet. NO carbs, sugars to feed the cancers, organic whole foods only. My friend applied these with the treatments and her girl did live to be 14 so she had a long life and she stayed on the organic no carb diet for the remainder of her life. Cooking for your dog or feeding raw might help his system fight the cancer longer. Carbs sugars feed the cancers. If you have a holistic vet in your area you might explore holistic treatments, Chinese herbs, the use of tumeric to help his body fight the cancer. Make the appointment with the oncologist to see what they have to offer. Find a holistic vet in your area to help you support your dogs well being through this.
I hope you find a way to give your dog a longer life with you
Diane

This post has been on my mind ever since I read it around midnight last night. I couldn't even think through my tears of anything to say to you that would make this situation any better. It's so hard and unfair when something happens to our four legged babies. I am just so very very sorry your sweet puppy has been diagnosed with this. My heart is breaking for you and for him. I don't even know him but I have no doubt that he is just the best boy ever. Please take care and know that the peas are here for you if there is anything at all that you need. (((((Hugs)))))
