I never do, but admire them on others' trees. ETA: This reminds me of my "HOTPAD" poll! This is what I call 'icicles': \/ \/ \/ below-- individual thin, metallic 'ribbons' This is my idea of "TINSEL" below \/ \/ \/ more of a fluffy 'garland'

Nope. No icicle lights on my house, either.

Not in the last 40 years! But it brings back great memories of my childhood. We weren't *throwers^. Each single icicle had to be meticulously placed on the branch ~ usually by my mother. ETA: I'm talking about silver tinsel icicles.

It depends on what you mean. I never use "tinsel", but I do have icicle ornaments.

Like pattyrain said, we never used the individual tinsel strands (although we did have tinsel garlands that wrapped around the tree at one point), but we have had packages of actual icicle ornaments that we put on. They were plastic. I don't use those now, but instead have a few handcrafted ones instead.

Well now I'm not sure what this thread is about. What you are referring to we would call tinsel. Icicles were clear (maybe sparkly) plastic ornaments that were really thin and twisted to look like icicles. They came in big packs so my grandma put about 50 on her tree. They had tiny little hooks shaped onto the end.

I have never seen those before myshelly. Many with strings, but none with hooks all in one piece.

Icicles.....as in ornaments shaped like well, icicles? Yes, I have done. Tinsel, no, not since my DDs were old enough to see why I dislike it.

I'm assuming you are talking about tinsel? I never use it because I have animals and I don't want them to eat it It is also a PITA to take off the tree later

We had many baubles shaped like icicles growing up but not these days.
ETA are we talking about tinsel? Nooooooo, never any tinsel, I can't even touch the stuff. It gives me the wiggins.

Ornaments, yes. Tinsel, no. My mother had to have them and they had to be "just right". Drove me frickin nuts how she was about those things. I don't think I've used them since I've had my own tree.

We used to until my cat ate it and it was sticking out of her butt. It scared her and she freaked out...running top speed through the house with it flapping in the wind. It was funny...actually hysterical. We haven't used it since. We didn't know it could be dangerous at that time. Funny memory

Are you talking about tinsel? If so, yes I use tinsel every year. For DD's first Christmas in 1988, I purchased some gorgeous tinsel that looks like antiqued gold. I have never seen any that color before or since. Every year for 28 years I have put that stuff on the tree, and then painstakingly taken it back off and saved it in a container.
If you are talking about the individual icicles like myshelly posted, then no I have never used those. They are beautiful though!

We don't use tinsel because it's a huge mess but we have twisted metal icicles like this: Tinsicles

I use tinsel on my tree every year. I use silver one year and gold the next. It is taken off the tree after Christmas and stored until the next time. Lots of work but I love doing it! I catch up on my Hallmark movies while I'm putting it on the tree. I'm old school, I know...
The plastic icicles, I have those but don't use them. They glow in the dark when exposed to light during the day. I don't really like that look, so I don't use them.

If they are that old, you might want to make sure they aren't the older style that may have lead in them. I heard an interesting fact recently - old tinsel was actually made with lead and was discontinued when concerns over lead poisoning became a thing. I forget the dates though. No tinsel here. No ornaments or garland that looks like icicles either.

But after so many years, it has become part and parcel of the Christmas season and I would miss the tree without it!

My mom loved icicles when I was a child. I'm not a fan. They also had to be placed specifically on the branches, no clumps. What a pain.

When I was a child, every year. Don't remember the first time I was married, but probably not. But the second husband hated that stuff. So now, it's on my tree!! (advantage: Single)

I marked 'other' because I LOOOOOVE icicles on the tree, but since we have cats, they're not a good idea. (I used to work with someone who had to pull them out of her cat's behind... lol! and that's the best case scenario with that whole thing.) We use a tinselly garland on our tree instead, but I would so much rather use individual stranded icicles / tinsel than the garland. eta: I remember using them when I was a kid, and as an adult, before I got my cats-- each strand would get placed 'just so' to catch the lights, and when you took the tree down, you removed every strand and saved them in a plastic bag till the next year. good memories!!

We use the garland tinsel, yes. We don't use the individual strand tinsel or " icicles" primarily because of the cat, and because they are a PITA. I'm another one who grew up with a mom who loved them, and every strand had to be placed "just right" on the branches .

There are also twisted metal icicles that you can find (vintage or new) that have the hook in top-- basically just a very thin strip of aluminum (?) flashing that's twisted very slightly. They look nicer to me than the plastic icicle ornaments.
