Not in the last 40 years! But it brings back great memories of my childhood. We weren't *throwers^. Each single icicle had to be meticulously placed on the branch ~ usually by my mother. Well now I'm not sure what this thread is about. What you are referring to we would call tinsel. Icicles were clear (maybe sparkly) plastic ornaments that were really thin and twisted to look like icicles. They came in big packs so my grandma put about 50 on her tree. They had tiny little hooks shaped onto the end. Yup.

Nope. No to tinsel and the closest thing we have to spiral icicles are our pickle ornaments.

ETA: I'm talking about silver tinsel icicles. We must have had the same mom. One. at. a. time. It did make it prettier, though. We used them on real trees. I now have a fake tree so the thought of taking them off, um, no. I think they'd "wrinkle" if put in storage with tree.

Yes, sharlag your idea of icicles is the same as mine. And yes I do put it/them on my tree. One strand at a time just like I was taught to do as a child and taught my children to do the same. I love the look. The more a tree sparkles the better I like it. It's like the tree becomes magical. I bought a retro set of shiny silver tin stars to add more sparkle to my tree. I hang them next to the lights so they reflect them and they are so much easier than messing around with the strands of tinsel junk.

Along with my icicles I also hang little (about the size of quarter)mirrors back in the branches to add more sparkle. Did I mention that I like sparkle.

Haha, my mom always called them icicles. My brother and I called them tinsel. That fluffy stuff down below is what we call garland. We do not use them because i don't know where to find them and I don't have the patience to be as delicate as I need to. I have really fun memories of just taking handfuls of them and throwing them into the front of the tree! That's probably why my mom quit buying them in the early 90s...

from my recollection, I would take a small amount of strands (perhaps 5-10), and toss it strategically at a branch, let it fall into place, then finish arranging from there. It was an important part of the tree decorating!!

I don't use them, but we always had it on our (real) tree when I was growing up. We'd start out placing each strand carefully, and by the end, just tossing it wherever. We called it tinsel.

We call that lametta here. We used it when I was growng up and I use it now, but I haven't seen nice fine lametta for years so I am carefully removing and reusing some I bought about 7 years ago which is silver and irredescent- really pretty .

Even if I wanted to put tinsel on our tree we can't because we have 2 cats. Tinsel can kill them. We did have this on our tree growing up,
