There are gingers on my dad's side of the family, but none in our immediate family. I have to say, though, it surprises me that there are not more red-heads around, because most people I know who have red hair, have passed it down to all or most of their children.

I am the only red head in my family, it was passed down form somewhere on my dad's side. I am hoping that one of my boys will have a red headed baby. I hate the term ginger.

I'd like to share this with my DDIL, she's the only red head in our family! How do I copy?

My grandmother was a redhead, the only one in her family of 10. None of her 3 kids had red hair, but 3 out of 10 grandkids have it (including me). My cousin's is more dark dark auburn than true red, but my older brother and I are undeniably redheads. Out of her 15 great grandchildren, my son is the only one. My niece has a lot of strawberry in her blonde, but you wouldn't call her a redhead.
I hated my hair color when I was a kid, but grew to appreciate it as a teenager and adult. I love it now, and gravitate toward other redheads. They're my tribe. I really really hope I have red headed grandchildren.

I'm the only redhead in my family. Both my mom and her father had red hair as little kids, but it changed as they got older. I've kept mine. When DD was born, she had a head full of brown hair, with little sections of red tips...it was so cute. I was a little sad that she wasn't a full-on redhead, though. I love the shirt in the OP

MY ds has flaming red/orange hair. No one else in our families or one generation back have it but apparently both Dh's and My grandfathers had red hair. We only remember them as grey and bald. He loves it and the attention he gets from it, doesn't hurt it is naturally curly too.

My maternal grandmother had red hair. She had 5 girls and not one of them had a touch of red in her hair. But my brother and I are red heads and I have a cousin with red hair. All 3 of us have grown darker over the years, but we all still have red hair. Of the 3 of us, I'm the only one with kids. DS had red hair as a baby but it when blonde as he got older. DD has red high lights in the sun, but otherwise her hair is brown. None of my cousins had kids with red hair. I guess we will see if my grandchildren have red hair.

My brother and I are redheads. Our biological dad was a pure Scot. One of my daughters is a redhead, but a different kind of red than mine. My hair started out white blond and then turned red as I got older. Now it is getting mousy as I get older. Thus I get highlites and lowlites to give it a little more umph. I even have some purple in it now. Red hair is so fun to play with.

My feisty 10 year old daughter has red hair. We have no idea where it comes from - no red hair on either side. I'd be interested to know why she's the only red.

I'm a "majestic unicorn"! I have 4 children, 2 blond, 1 strawberry (but she dyes it dark brown) & 1 with brown hair. My son's beards come in bright red like my hair. It looks so weird! I have 2 grandsons, 1 strawberry red & one blond. I hated it as a kid, always got teased, but as I've grown older it's not that bad & it's amazing how many people ask what color I use because they are trying to get that red color! LOL

My DD15 is a beautiful red head! We don't have any red hair in our family either but it must be hidden somewhere. Once when she was younger a man came up to her at Costco and said, 'Do you realize how much money someone would spend to have hair the same color as yours?' She loves being a red head and is always reminding me how 'special' she is. lol

My son is a red head. I love it. I am shocked by it as well. My husbands grandfather is a red head and my Uncle is as well. But, no other child on either side has the red! He is pale with some freckles thrown in as well! He likes to say he is a "ginger"

I'm a majestic unicorn: I seriously need that t-shirt. My username translates to redhead.
For anyone who is wondering where red hair comes from: there needs to be a red gene on BOTH the mother and father's genes. Neither parent needs to be a redhead: they just have to have the gene. And even with both parents having a red gene, there's only a 1 in 4 chance of being a redhead. Majestic unicorns, indeed!
One night while I was at Chick-fil-A, a redheaded mom came in with FIVE redheaded kids and so I just had to ask her about it. It turns out her husband is a redhead too and all five kids had a different shade of red. Only half her husband's siblings were redheads. And in her family, she was the only redhead.
I'm another ginger who dislikes the term ginger. My hair has been every shade of red over the years, from fiery copper to reddish strawberry blonde. The color is fading with time but still red.

My friend's daughter has red curly hair and my son has curly hair. I was so hoping that they would get married.
I would then have little roly poly clown grand babies! OMG the cuteness would have been overwhelming

My husband is a red head, his mom a red head, my grandfather a red head, I had natural auburn highlight. We were positive we would have red headed kids. And got a blond and brunette. Shocking us all. I'm curious to see what my sons beard will be one day.

Another Redhead here, have the freckles too, though mine is much lighter now as I age and is strawberry blonde. My Mom is a redhead, her parents both were. Have a redhaired sis. Ds is dark blonde with red undertones, his beard is definitely red, though Dh is dark haired.

My son was born with bright red hair that very quickly turned into a mousy brown. His dad's brothers and sisters had red hair, but not his dad. I don't know anyone in my family that has red hair, so it was strange to find out both parents have to have red somewhere.

Around 13% of the Scottish population has red hair, (along with Ireland we have the highest percentage in the world), so I think we would need a different T-shirt!

We have a lot of red "highlights" in my family, but not true redheads (those are in the much extended family). My oldest DD & I both have natural red highlights and look really red in the sun. Probably what many would call auburn hair. Younger DD looks medium brown inside, but glistens a red - ish color outdoors. DH has very dark brown hair with red in his beard. It's always interesting to me because some people seem to "see" our hair as more red than others do. I've noticed with recent family pics that one photographer edits & our hair looks more brown then the next year with a different photographer we looked very red. I think reality is somewhere in the middle of their edits.

my mom & her brother both have red hair, hers is darker than his. Neither my brother nor I inherited it - but my ds did. His has gotten darker as he's gotten older but its still definitely red

My BFF has very dark brown hair, and her DH was already bald by the time they met. She knew that he had red hair as a kid, but didn't think much about it. Now she has two boys with very bright red hair! I adore them. When the oldest was young, we used to go out shopping all the time (I didn't work at the time, she only had one child to deal with) and people always assumed he was mine.

So would a strawberry blond be considered a red head? or ginger? I'm strawberry blond, DH had red hair as a teenager but has since turned brown with some red (and gray) in his beard. My DD has some red and brown in her blond hair. DS is a towhead. Why is ginger offensive to some?

My feisty 10 year old daughter has red hair. We have no idea where it comes from - no red hair on either side. I'd be interested to know why she's the only red. If I recall correctly--red hair is a recessive gene feature. To have red hair, one must have 2 recessive genes for hair color (1 from mother and 1 from father).
