My oldest son is 24 years old. We did everything "right" when it came to books. We started him from before birth with books. We read to him and furnished tons of books in our home. When he hit the tween years he decided that reading was not "cool" and would not touch a book unless it was required for school. We were so disappointed because my dh and I LOVE books.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. For some reason he asked me dh for some suggestions of a book to read. My dh suggested Dune. For some reason this book has captured him and he is reading every chance he can get. We are so excited!!
Now, I just hope this sticks.
If you have a reluctant reader, don't give up hope.

My 24 and 22 year old daughters read for pleasure all the time. My 18 year old daughter's pleasure reading consists solely of the comments on the YouTube make-up videos she's currently obsessed with. Good to know there is hope!

I am an avid reader, dh not at all. Read to ds 19 while he was still in the womb! Read to him every night, encouraged him to read, took him to the library, he got an award for AR reading in grade school. Then the teens hit, and like you said, reading was no longer cool. Don't think he's read a book since about 6th grade. But thanks for the glimmer of hope! I just think he is missing out on so much, reading is such an important part of my life. But you can lead a horse to water.....

My other son is an avid reader. We did the same thing with him that we did with the older one. For some reason it worked with one and not the other one.

I was a reluctant reader. Heck, I didn't even read the books I was supposed to read for school. One night, I was staying with a friend. I couldn't sleep and I picked up a book off the shelf in the bedroom I was in. It was Ann Rule's, The Stranger Beside Me. I couldn't put it down. I found that I loved to read True Murders. When it was time for me to leave, I still had a few chapters to read. I didn't want to ask to take the book with me so I hit a book store as soon as I got back home and bought it. My friend probably would have been fine with me taking the book but I didn't ask. I have been a reader ever since. I go through down times where I don't read much but I always have 2 books going at a time.......one that I am reading and another that I am listening to the audiobook.
DS is not a reader. I don't know if he ever will be. He was when he was young but quit around the teen years.
