I've been thinking about buying an Amazon Kindle. I already have an iPad, which I love, but the lending library is appealing. If you have one, do you have a problem with a glare on the screen? I would use my iPad while waiting for DD at her swimming classes, and the tarp we had to stay under was white. It cast a really strong glare on the iPad screen that made it hard to read no matter how I adjusted the brightness. I also have trouble using it in very bright sunlight.
I thought this wasn't a problem for the Kindle, but I read a complaint or two about glares. The Kindle is the special of the day for about two more hours so I'm trying to make up my mind quick.
If you have a Kindle, would you recommend it for outdoor use? Do you find a problem with a glare? Would you recommend it overall if you already have a tablet/iPad? I would mainly use it for books, but I'm not a voracious reader as I once was... maybe two or three books a month if I'm lucky.
TIA!
ETA: Just wanted to add this is $100 off of a Kindle HDX.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite, so glare is absolutely not a problem. I would think that any glare problems you have outside with the iPad would be similar with the other Kindle versions.
I wouldn't let the lending library sway you at this point. Just the other day Amazon introduced a new lending service called Kindle Unlimited. It costs $10 per month to join. I've heard that many major publishers aren't participating. The Prime lending library seems to still exist but it seems very limited to me. I can't seem to find many titles. My personal guess is that they may be phasing that out.
I love my Paperwhite, though. I can't say enough good things about it.

It depends on which one your asking about. I have a Kindle HD and it reminds me of an ipad....so when I try and read outside I do get a glare. I have to turn the brightness up really high in order to read. I like the HD because I also use it as a tablet and surf the net.
The other Kinder (I think it's called paperwhite) is just an e-reader. I have the orginal version of the paperwhite. I could only use it to read on (no surfing the net) and it was/is great to read outside. I never had an issue with glares. I mainly use the HD version only for the ease of surfing. HTH.

I forgot to add that it's a Kindle HDX! I know the Paperwhite has no glare, but I missed out on that amazing $49 deal a few months back. Urg! Thanks for the replies so far!

If you want no glare, go for the Paperwhite. I'm a nook girl and have both the HD (like the Fire) and the e-reader with the glow light (e-ink). I read the most on the e-ink reader and there is no glare. I watch movies, surf the web, read occasionally on the HD. (I also went with the nookHD because it's an Android, and I can use the Kindle app with that.)

Saw your update......I think it'll be like reading on your ipad, so there will be glare. My mom has the HDX and it's really similar to the HD version. The one cool thing about the HDX is that you can download certain movies onto it for free (for prime members). So if your going on a trip, you can watch movies without being connected to wifi.

An anti-glare screen protector for your ipad might solve the issues with it. I have the regular Kindle and find it hard to read outdoors. The Prime lending library only lets you access one book per month.

Paperwhite for sure. I have a iPad and a paperwhite. To me there is no comparison. I love my iPad, but I don't like reading on it. Paperwhite is just for reading, no glare, small and lightweight. The HD Kindle is like a iPad, there is glare, the paperwhite is lit, but it's backlit, not glaring, the screen has a matte finish.
There a plenty of sites that have free or cheap books for your Kindle. One is Pixelofink.com. Sign up and you get a email daily with 12 or more books either free or very, very cheap. I've read some amazing books from this site. You'll love your paperwhite, I promise!!

I have a kindle fire HD and find it hard to read it outdoors. On the other hand, my kindle paper white is the best thing ever. There is absolutly no glare..I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Thanks for your input, everyone! I didn't realize the Kindle Fire screen is similar to an iPad. I just remember reading there was no glare problem, but I guess that review was just for the e-readers. I'll most likely get a Paperwhite. I didn't even think of an anti glare screen. The kids probably won't like it but I'd only put it on when we're outdoors. I'll check out that Pixelofink site. Thanks... you guys are the best!
