I'm getting together with a new group of women (through Meetup.com) to do a craft project in a couple of weeks. The project for this meeting is making an infinity scarf by arm knitting.
I've never tried anything like this so I thought it would be fun to try it. I like to wear scarves but don't like a lot of bulk around my neck.
What type of yarn should I consider?

I've never heard of it, but I'm intrigued. I bet my DD would be interested. She's doing all sorts of finger knitting And other yarn crafts. How do you do it?

LOL! I have no idea. I've watched a few YouTube videos to get an idea, but I'm totally clueless.

You need super bulky yarn. I'd get a yarn that recommends a 9 mm needle/hook at minimum, but bigger would be better. It's really easy to learn even if you don't knit or crochet. Only downside is your arms are covered in yarn loops so you have to start and finish the project in one sitting, obviously. Yarn handcuffs for an hour, haha! I don't care for it. Pulled out the scarf I made and crocheted it with a hook. Your arms are your needles, so the circumference of your arm is how big the stitches are. My arms are wayyyy bigger than even a super large needle or crochet hook. It was too loopy and I felt that the loops would easily get pulled and mishapen since they are so loose. ETA: Red Heart Grande is really great. Bernat Blanket feels almost velvety. I've found both at Michaels.

My son's girlfriend and I made them last Christmas. We tried several different kinds of yarn. We had a great time. We made a few and took them apart and made them again (and again). It took us about an hour to finish the first one and then it took about half the time for the second one. I used the Bernat brand. Pick a really thick yarn in a color you like. The nice thing is when you snag one, it just gets right back in shape with some pulling. You pull the yarn pretty tight so the loops weren't too big.
ETA: They are pretty bulky. You don't have to make it as wide as suggested (maybe 12?) We made them 9 wide.

I've done it, about 10 years ago. I used a super bulky wool and it looked nice but I realized I was allergic to yarn so I couldn't wear it for long. Basically you pretend your arms ate the needles and knit, very easy I think I finished it during that show with the briefcases. I was visiting a friend in Spain so they had that show before we did. I also got the yarn there so I don't remember the brand.

I like the idea but I don't like anything that bulky myself and you need to use a super bulky yarn. I know I saw some yarn at Michael's for this.
