My 10 year old and his friends decided that they all want high speed RC cars and go-pro cameras for Christmas, so this spring they can have races and record them. DS found one on Amazon that is a knock off. It has decent reviews and the price is much better ($65 with accessories) but I am not sure about it. The other options are an original go-pro without wifi for about $110 or a go pro hero4 session pack for $235 which is on qvc with easy pay.
So, I am wondering if your kids use theirs a lot and what for? Is it worth getting the more expensive one or should I start with the cheaper knock off or the original go pro? How important is the wifi? Thanks!

I'll be interested to see some ideas. . Got DD one for her birthday and she has done zero with it so I am pretty annoyed. Got it so she could take it in the pool as she kept saying she wanted to take her iPhone in the pool with a special case and I said NO I will get you a gopro and you can use that - got it and she never used it, hasn't brought it to the beach or the pool. I am sure DS would love and would use her Go Pro like your kids are doing with his remote control cars, how fun that sounds.

I can see taping the RC races. I don't have a GoPro, but several of my dog club friends do. They use them to tape their scootering runs. We have sled dogs and the dogs pull two or three wheeled scooters when there is no snow.
Since my pup is too young still, I love watching their videos.

If he is filming races, what are the chances of the RC car overturning and breaking the camera? How much does the expensive GoPro handle in terms of damage, and the knock-off?

I have no idea. The reviews said they are both sturdy, but who knows. The knock off had a lot of good reviews, but a lot of them were from people Who were given the product to give heir "honest review" but they all fave 5 stars. So I am not sure what to think about that. I don't want to spend a lot of money on something he loses interest in quickly, but I also don't want to spend $65 or more on something that ends up being junk and only has a 30 day warranty.

DS2 asked for one last Christmas. He wanted it for videoing his skateboarding tricks and skatepark visits. We got it as a "family gift" so he would realize it wasn't just his! DH uses it on his drone and has some pretty neat footage of our home/land. This past 4th of July he got footage of our party at my parents lake. We had a couple hundred people playing horseshoes, corn toss, fishing, paddle boating, picnicking, etc. He flew it all over the lake, above everyone, just really neat footage. At the end of video the drone goes underwater because a couple of people walked up and started talking to DH and he wasn't paying attention to the drone battery level. When he realized it was going down it was too late. Luckily the GoPro was in the waterproof case and the drone went down just a few feet off shore!
We've also attached it to our dogs collar as he ran around the yard. That was pretty fun to watch, too!

My boys have a Vivitar Action Camera. ( google it, amazon has them) It is similar to the go pro. Go pro is what they asked for, but we just could not afford to get 2. they have had the vivitars for at least 3 yrs now. One of the boys is now 13 and the other is now 19. they still use them. They record bike rides, snow boarding ( we live in KS, it does not happen often) skate boarding, They took them to CO this summer and recorded their mountain biking, I think our oldest hooked it to one of his radio controlled trucks and recorded. And our oldest has put it in the dash of his car to record driving neat places. I think we used it when we went to cali to Yosemite.
I have to say for what I paid... they were less then $50. They have been a great investment and have held up. I figured they would last a yr or 2 and that would be it. They are still going strong.

I'll look for the Vivitar but don't recall seeing them when I looked earlier. Sounds like a good deal, though!

My DGS (16 yo.) has had one for a few years. He has some incredible down hill skiing videos. Also uses it when fishing, zip lining and just about all outdoor activity. He loves it.

Zip line, snorkel, jet ski, snowboard, mountain bike, wakeboard… as long as they are moving they take it. It also went on a bobsled ride in Jamica. He also got a good film of two octopus like creatures doing the wild thing. You can hear me squealing in the background.

I found the Vivitar on Amazon and the reviews were worse than the other knock-off I was looking at. The positive would be that it is a more-known brand and I "know" someone who has had them and love them.
For those who have an action camera of any brand, is the wifi crucial?

My primary use is shooting vacation videos. This video was shot entirely on a GoPro:
I got my GoPro a couple of years before I upgraded to a DSLR that has video capability. Now when I record video, I do about half on the GoPro and half on my DSLR. The GoPro is still more versatile - I can use it underwater, while skiing, wear it on a chest harness to keep my hands free, etc. I do like the SLR footage for some purposes. My GoPro doesn't have a screen on it and sometimes I appreciate having the preview, and you also can't zoom on a GoPro.
In addition to the vacation videos I make from our travels, I also shoot short sequences of footage all year (soccer games, riding bikes in the summer, trick or treating on Halloween, that kind of thing) and put together a year in review type movie each year. Probably half of this footage was shot on the GoPro.
If you are the type who will edit your footage and make movies out of it, GoPros are awesome little gadgets. But you have to be the type of person that will actually get the footage off the camera and put it into a viewable format!

To answer one of your other questions, the wifi will allow you to preview the footage from the camera on your phone (assuming you don't have the preview screen on the camera itself) and you can also control the camera remotely. But TBH I have wifi and don't think I've turned it on once beyond just playing around with it when I first got it to see how it works.

I bought one for dh for his birthday this year. He wasn't thrilled at first, but loved it when we went to Hawaii as he was able to film all the water sports we did. My dd uses it too; we got her a SUP for her birthday and she's finishing up her movie that she and her friends made. I like that you can use it almost anywhere and not have to worry about it getting wet or damaged (they have some pretty durable housings).
